Faith and Piety in Early Judaism: Texts and Documents
This book is jam packed full of information. The sections about the Essenes, The Pharisees, the Sadducees, and so forth alone is worth the cost of this book. Simply, this little paperback volume will do as much toward rounding out the knowledge of the Bible student as to the thoughts and expectations of the people with whom Jesus and His Disciples interact as any of which I am aware. It is very helpful in that it allows the NT reader to better understand WHY Jesus says this or that and further, why He says it to whom He does!
Any serious NT and Gospel reader ought have read this book because modern American Bible students often pass by the nuance and meaning that was readily apparent to those who heard Jesus and His Apostles speak. It aids us specifically by getting our minds into the minds of the original hearers and thus enables the modern day reader to hear the Word in the same way as those to whom it was first addressed.
This volume ought also be required reading of any serious student of Judaica and/or Comparative Religion. Hope this helps. I have purchased this book many times as having loaned it to many, it rarely finds its' way back to my library and I often refer back to it to refresh forgotten detail essential to my hope of faithfully communicating the message of the Four Christian Gospels.
