A NOTED RELIGIOUS SCHOLAR'S BRIEF OVERVIEW

Martin Emil Marty (born 1928) is an American Lutheran religious scholar who served as a Lutheran pastor, then taught at the University of Chicago Divinity School, where he now holds emeritus status. He has written many books, such as Pilgrims in Their Own Land: 500 Years of Religion in America, Varieties of Unbelief, etc.
He wrote in the Preface to this 1959 book, "This short history of Christianity is intended to make its way between specialized monographs and ponderous general narratives of the past of this faith... The entire book is an attempt at recovering the obvious... I have tried simply to take hold of a great story and then attempt to stay out of its way as much as possible." (Pg. 9-10)
He notes that although "As late as A.D. 200 Tertullian looked out from Carthage and feared that the Marcionite sweep would devastate the Christian world," the movement "was in reality a one-man force." (Pg. 81-82)
In the Middle Ages, "the papacy was haunted by inner difficulties... (John XII's) voracity was not matched by his veracity; his personally scandalous life and his political intrigues led to the slipping of his tarnished tiara." (Pg. 107)
He reports, "The Inquisition was a formalization of the church's long temptation to enforce its claims for truth with the sword; it was not an invention of the period... Torture was permitted by papal decree. A final punishment could mean death by burning." (Pg. 188-189) In the case of the execution of anti-Trinitarian Michael Servetus, Marty notes, "When (a Geneva council) decreed death by burning, Calvin intervened, but only to the point of asking for a milder death. Servetus died heroically, shouting with theological precision his convictions..." (Pg. 246-247)
Obviously not a "detailed" treatment, this book is useful for someone wanting a quick overview, that is more extensive than a general outline.

Worth the time to read!!

The history of Christianity is fascinating, revealing, revolting, illuminating, uplifting and ultimately, the history of us all. Christianity has shaped the history of modern western humankind for the past two millennia. Dr.Marty's text is eminently readable. It pulls one along on the journey from Jerusalem and Rome through the struggles, conflicts, failures and triumphs that are the consequences of following Christ wherever his words are taught. A thought provoking, revealing read for any Christian.
