A Dispassionate scholarly statement, analysis, comparison and contrast of two dominant religions: Judaism and Christianity.

As stated on the back of the book, This book discusses some of the issues encircling three basic questions ongoing but still incipient to most religions: Where do we meet G-d? How should we live? What is it we Hope for? If I had any criticism, it would be they did not cover the entirety of issues these religions share in commonalitiy, but that is too much to hope from any book short of a complete systematic theology.
THis book presents two viewpoints, Christian and Jewish, clearly, precisely, accurately and without embellishment by the two co-authors. Each is world-renowned in their respective fields of Judaism and Christianity. It is evident from the beginning the authors are firmly entrenched and devout in their respective faith. Simultaneously, they show an evident open high regard, esteem—and even affection-- for the faith of the other.
The book is a brilliantly executed and quite readable--while still remaining erudite and scholarly. The subject matter is accurately stated, then carefully compared, and finally contrasted by the authorial pair, with rebuttal from each following. The authors do not attempt to harmonize the two often-disparate viewpoints: Orthodox Christian and Orthodox Jewish. Instead, they show the similarities-- and only then show exactly how these commonalities emphasize the particularity of each view. Unlike so many similar discussions of this vein, we hear today, the co-authors present their positions fully knowledgeable of the other's understanding, and do so in an amicable--even comradely atmosphere absent of the rancorous rhetoric and extreme passion so often encountered. Each displays the deep and abiding love of their faith without denigrating that of the other.
Reading this work was a sheer joy and pleasure as well as being informative. It did take effort at times to follow the train of thought, particularly in Bruce Chilton's excellent exposition of his interpretation of the Prologue in the first chapter of John's Gospel. This however is common to any work of this nature, and the effort is well rewarded. Enjoyable Also refreshing is the wonderful conclusion to the work written by Jacob Neusner. Reading the words of these two distinguished gentlemen, scholars and authors, I wished I had encountered both these teachers when I began my learning some half-century and longer past. Disappointingly, then I consider, they also would have been far younger--and with substantially less to offer than they have presently.
I wholly and heartily recommend this book to any with interests in either or both religions, students interested in the general study of religion, religious philosophy or comparative religions.

Helpful But Missed the Mark

Both scholars present their perspectives and respond to the other in insightful and excellent ways. They are experts in the field, but they are scholars of one perspective within their respective faiths. Their views are not shared by all of their fellow believers and it would have been interesting if this project could have included scholarly voices from different points of theological perspective within the respective faiths. Of course, one volume may not be able to contain the various voices needed to address these important questions. Perhaps it could have been a three-volume set, a volume dedicated to each of the three areas of focus.
One of the stated purposes of the book was to find a common starting point from which to communicate between the faiths and not only did it fail in many ways to accomplish this, they may have even muddied the water more for each other at points and consequently for readers. They also tend to exaggerate the differences between the faiths at points which may be helpful in selling the book but not to the debate. Again, there is much insight to gain from this work and it is certainly needed in the ongoing dialogue between faiths. It must be noted, however, they are from one point along the theological spectrum and this prevents this work from presenting the full voice of each faith.
