Insightful in ways you'll not be expecting

Actually, I had no expectations for this book when I purchased it. It was the primary text for Dr. Peters' course in systematic theology, a class in which I was enrolled. The book challenges the reader to consider God outside the usual boxes into which God is placed. Peters' example of prolepsis (and analepsis, for that matter) in regard to God being and acting in the world is a prime example of this. From the beginning, I had difficulty understanding what systematic theology is, no matter how many times it was explained to me. The problem was not that I couldn't think outside the box, but that I routinely thought outside the box about God and everything else. Reading and discussing the material in the book brought me to the realization that systematic thinking came naturally to me, and that I actually understood it better than I thought. For those whose thought processes cause them to think differently, the book's material is equally good in that it is presented as user-friendly as any text on systematic theology can be. One disappointment in the book itself is the poor materials used in making the paperback cover. Almost immediately, the cover curls up big time. Soon, the corners of the cover become dog-eared, and if the book is not placed or set down carefully all of the time, the cover will have creases and/or folds down the middle shortly after that. But that's the fault of the publisher/printer, not the author.

Excellent overview of current theo. Prolepsis explained.

This book is easily one of the best overviews of the history of theological thought currently available. It is especially useful in that Dr. Peters is one of the first to grapple with post-modern theological thinking and its implications. Dr. Peters is particularly insightful in his explication of prolepsis, the idea that God is drawing us all toward a future which God has envisioned. There will be much food for thought here, especially for those seeking some support of orthodoxy without closing the door to other theological trends. I have not only found it helpful for my own study, but have used it to help answer tough questions from my parishioners

trinitarianism

When I started reading this book I thought "oh, hum, more new age drivel from a mainline denomination liberal". What I found was a wonderfully crafted and thought provoking treatise on the Trinity, on the real presence of God in our midst bordering on mysticism, which is a good thing because I feel mainline denominations are too bound with seeking "knowledge" which increases faith in self instead of increasing faith in God. Not for the faint of heart or for the beginner.
