There are better versions of Bonhoeffer's Christology lectures available
By Andy Rowell
This book contains excerpts from Bonhoeffer's Christology lectures in 1933. The translation by Craig Nessan is very good BUT these are just excerpts! The Christology lectures by Bonhoeffer are much too dense and complex to understand without the full text and the best notes. You are much better off reading the full version and not just excerpts in the 1978 translation Christ the Center. Better yet, get the critical authoritative version Berlin: 1932-1933 (Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, Vol. 12) which will be released September 1, 2009.

If however you are doing an academic paper on the Christology lectures by Bonhoeffer, you may want to read the two essays about this material that begin this book.
- Renate Wind, "Church Struggle and Contemplation: A Rediscovery of Bonhoeffer's Political Christology," pp. 5-19.
- Craig L. Nessan, "The American Reception: Introduction to Bonhoeffer's Christ the Center," pp. 20-30.

This volume also contains a few excerpts from Letters and Papers in Prison, the Barmen Theological Declaration, and an assortment of other quotes about Christology from other authors (Kurt Marti, Bertolt Brecht,Rose Auslaender, Martin Buber, Shalom Ben-Chorin, Hildegard of Bingen and Martin Luther) without dates or explanation of their significance. This does not help you understand Bonhoeffer.

Helpful but Only so Helpful
By Peter Dubbelman
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, as every major theologian must, wrestled long and hard over the above question. His answer informed his thoughts and formed his life. In short, for Bonhoeffer, “Christ is the center” – “a rediscovered center” and “the center of existence, history, and nature.”

Like most theologians, Bonhoeffer’s theology is dominated by the presence of Christ, but it’s a “‘theology in performance’ … praxis is not an after the fact consequence of his theology but the central location for theological understanding.” (6) Bonhoeffer’s Christology played an important role throughout the rest of the 20th century as did his answer to this question (“Who Is Christ for Us?); however, is his answer still a properly nuanced response for our day? Facets, by their publication of this book, attests that Bonhoeffer’s thoughts are still important, as we too grapple with this question of the ages: Who is Christ?

Even if we’re not theologians, it’s a question that God asks each of us (Matt 16:15): Who is Christ for you? A proper answer is affirmed by the Father (3:17) but challenged by all that is ungodly (4:3); some mock its validity (27:40) others are infuriated by the audacity of its truth claim (26:65); it’s the key to being a disciple and a Church leader but only something graciously received as a gift (16:16-18). Its answer needs to be proclaimed by every Christian, heard by every unreached person, and properly nuanced for every generation (Rom 10:9-15). Some “believers” will shade their answer to fit their own needs or perspective; however, those who are pastors, teachers, establishers … in the body of Christ must keep this answer sure and steadfast; much depends on this, as Christ is the cornerstone of our individual faith and corporate Community (Matt 16:21-23). This book can help. Bonhoeffer declares: Christ is “the man for others” and his church “is only church when it is there for others.”

This book contains two “interpretive essays.” Someone unfamiliar with Bonhoeffer’s extensive and deep Christological thoughts could find the introductory essays of this book its most helpful part.

The other half of the book consists of a compendium of Christological thoughts from Bonhoeffer, the latter primarily consisting of excerpts from Bonhoeffer’s 1933 Christology lectures but also several much shorter quotes from his other books and the Barmen Theological Declaration; a handful of on-topic-citations, from random authors, are also included. All of these quotations are certainly more helpful and contextual than tweets from @bonhoefferdaily, but Bonhoeffer takes pages to build his points and none of this book’s excerpts are given any contextual setting other than where they came from, which makes this book helpful but only so helpful.

Bonhoeffer’s 1933 Christology lectures represent:

1. The continuation of his dissertation, which “fused together ecclesiology and Christology in the formula, ‘Christ existing is community.’” (6)

2. The core of his Christology, which would later shape his most important books about Christian living; e.g., Cost of Discipleship, Living Together, Ethics, and Letters and Papers from Prison.

Excursus:
A Man in Christ came highly recommended to me by Dallas Willard and is now back in print! I’ve now read it twice. Chapter two is a bit academic and slow reading, but the rest of the book is full of great theology that centers on our union and life in Christ; it’s a concise yet lucid reading of Christology that sticks close to the Pauline corpus; it’s free from the weaknesses that higher criticism can bring into a discussion, yet scholastically written by a pastor who was a good theologian.
