Introduction In the field of biblical scholarship, there is a variety of approaches related to the study of the biblical text. This particular study of the prophetic tradition has several marks of distinction that differentiate it from other works but also provide a sense of coherence between this work and the other volumes in this particular series. First, this study includes the biblical book of Baruch. Consistent with the principle of inclusivity, the series has embraced for consideration biblical texts recognized by diverse believing communities as deuterocanonical or apocryphal in addition to the traditional canonical books.

Second, the study's central focus is on two main issues in selected prophetic texts: the role of power, with an emphasis on how power can be exercised to dominate and to liberate, and the role of eschatological vision, with an emphasis on how that vision presents a paradigm shift that moves from power over, that is, domination, to power with, that is, dominion. A critical analysis of all of the prophetic materials led me to recognize that certain texts demonstrate various power relations and the ways that power can be used: to dominate, to liberate, and to engender harmonious relations. Each section of the book moves through various shifts until a new paradigm emerges, one informed by justice, righteousness, and peace, a new creation that can only be realized when the relationships between God, humankind, and the natural world are harmonious and interdependent.

Third, the prophetic books are not studied in the order in which they appear in the canon, nor is each book studied in its entirety. Moreover, the study is concerned with the final canonical form of each prophetic book instead of the various stages of the texts' transmission, development, and redaction. The discussion attempts to establish a conversation between the world of the canonical text and the world in front of the text.

Fourth, throughout the study, attention is drawn to the role that language plays in the various biblical texts. This study explores how metaphors, similes, imagery, etc., seem to be reflective of certain perspectives, attitudes, and mindsets within a particular culture, and how figurative language not only creates a powerful message that is either oppressive and diminishing or liberating and transformative, but also colors the poetic and religious imagination of its readers in such a way as to have an impact on their theological perspectives and understanding. Central to the discussion is the multi-faceted way God is portrayed by the biblical text. Divine wrath and violence in metaphorical and figurative language are addressed, specifically in light of contemporary global concerns about violence in its many forms. Particular attention is also drawn to how images from the natural world function metaphorically and symbolically, and how these images have an impact on the text's theological message as well as on the audiences' theological imagination.

Fifth, the study represents a holistic approach to the biblical prophets insofar as it deals with issues and a vision that concern not only humankind but also the natural world. Thus, the study is admittedly done from a contemporary perspective that is informed by contemporary ideological concerns. Issues such as anthropocentrism, androcentrism, classism, speciesism, gender, patriarchy, hierarchy, and so forth, which seem to be embedded not only in the prophets' messages and texts but also in the authorial voice(s) behind the texts, are unmasked and critiqued insofar as they relate to the central focus of the book: power. A clear argument is made that the abuse of power affects both the human and non-human world. Sixth, selected biblical texts are examined from a liberationist point of view, one that is informed by my own social location as a white, middle-class, North Atlantic, Christian female who is committed to the search for and dissemination of truth. My social location and life commitment affords me the opportunity to interact with the biblical texts from both a position of power and privilege and a position of powerlessness and marginalization. Although the study proceeds from a reader-centered approach, the approach is significantly informed by the historical, social, cultural, and literary world of the prophets that helped shape the prophetic books as we have them today.

Seventh, in addition to the use of a holistic approach and an informed liberationist point of view, I also use a hermeneutical approach that is sensitive to the theories and thoughts of such scholars as Jose Severino Croatto, Hans Georg Gadamer, Paul Ricoeur, Sandra M. Schneiders, Elisabeth Schssler Fiorenza, Fernando Segovia, among others, all of whom argue that the biblical text is a living tradition and not merely a historical artifact or a classic work of ancient literature.

One final word: it is my hope that this study will contribute to the restoration of the prophetic texts to the believing communities of faith and that the prophetic spirit alive within all of life will continue to be awakened and become the true source of power that liberates and transforms all of creation. For this liberation and transformation, all creation groans and waits with eager longing and hopeful anticipation: For, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; The former things shall not be remembered Or come to mind. (Isa 65:17) Already this vision is unfolding if only we have ears to hear, eyes to see, and hearts to perceive the divine in the unexpected.

not much to add to current exegesis
By Michael Maldonado
This book was heavy on summarizing and light on actual commentary besides pointing out the obvious fact that the prophetic texts were produced in a patriarchal context. Use of gender images in metaphors and in relation to God are biased and God's vindictive use of violence in judgement legitimizes the very violence and injustice it seeks to address. Besides those few points, there is not much to add to current exegesis that cannot perhaps be found in the Women's Bible Commentary which I look forward to reading.

Good for getting a new perspective
By Michael_in_SC
The author had a definite aspect of the prophetic writings to highlight: as they related to Power and Liberation.
I definitely got some new insights from the Hebrew prophets. The vocabulary could have been a little more versatile
(there must be synonyms to the word 'liberation', which appeared very frequently) but the thrust and the content were helpful to me.

Power in the Prophets
By A Customer
A study of Power with its capacity to dominate, liberate or engender harmony, with the prophets assigned to one of three groups: those whose power is patriarchal (which is unacceptable, those whose power is directed to liberation (which is inadequate), and those for whom power is shared harmoniously between God, humanity and the natural world, leading to the transformation of all creation, which Dempsey believes is the only way to lasting peace. Selected texts are then interpreted according to their category which means that we are always in danger of interpretation according to our pre-conceived ideas.
