Truth about Separation of Church & Faith
By Elisheva
Fil.Dr.Magnus Zetterholm has in this very fascinating book: “THE MESSIAH in Early Judaism and Christianity”, again broadened the concept of MESSIAH. Very thorough, he takes the reader on a journey from the time of David, the promises God gave him in 2 Sam.7 on to the Prophets, Isaiah, Haggai, Zechariah.
and the early Scriptures.

We must remember that the Bible is a jew book, Jesus-Yeshua is Jewish, as were all the disciples, and it was mostly Jews who in crowds listened to Yeshua, the Messiah, because it was a well-known concept that they heard in the synagogue since childhood. They also knew that this Yeshua, the Messiah, the anointed one, was not YHWH. Every Jew knows that. (although the Church Fathers through some changes in the text suddenly wrote that Jesus was God / YHWH...This lie still persists since close to 2000 years yet and is called the Trinity)

Therefore, it became such an a collision with this concept and the early Christians called "Church Fathers" who had a completely different concept in Greek Philosophy. They changed Yeshua's name to Iesous (Greek) and Messiah became Christ. A whole new paradigm emerged and with that came increased persecution.
It is with immense pleasure that I can say: "Read this book" ... because it will open new doors of understanding for the Jewish Messiah concept and by emphasizing Jesus’ messianic role in God’s plan to be the Savior of mankind.

From Library Journal
Brecht provides a comprehensive study of the consolidation of the Reformation in the middle period of Luther's active life. He treats both Luther's personal life and the development of Lutheran doctrine and practice exhaustively. The reader is left with great admiration for Luther's talents as a theologian, translator, and church builder. This sympathetic but realistic portrait of Luther belongs in all academic and seminary libraries with a serious interest in Luther, Lutheranism, or the Reformation despite its great length, since it is worth savoring by all interested readers.

An extrordinary achievement
By R. Pennoyer
Martin Brecht's monumental three-volume biography of Martin Luther consists of Martin Luther: His Road to Reformation 1483-1521, Martin Luther 1521-1532: Shaping and Defining the Reformation, and Martin Luther The Preservation of the Church Vol 3 1532-1546, all published in English translation from the German by Fortress Press. To date I have worked through the first two volumes and am now embarking on the third. [see update below]

These three volumes represent an extraordinary achievement. For a full appreciation, however, it is important to understand what exactly Brecht set out to do and what makes this work so valuable. His work is neither a traditional biography of Martin Luther, nor a systematic treatment of Luther's theology. What Brecht gives us here is closer to an exposition or digest of Luther's works (his books, sermons, and correspondence) set within a narrative context.

Luther produced an enormous amount of material during his lifetime, with the standard English translation of Luther's works running to 55 large volumes (Luther's Works, eds. Jaroslav Pelikan and Helmut T. Lehmann). Brecht seems to have mastered not only this material, but the writings of many of Luther's opponents and contemporaries as well. The great service he has rendered for those of us who are not Luther specialists is that we now can turn to the appropriate section of Brecht's work for summary expositions of any of Luther's works and understand them in their particular historical context. Or perhaps better yet, we can read the biography to get a sense of Luther's activity as a whole, pausing here and there to read for ourselves particular works that strike our interest. For that purpose an excellent, affordable companion to Brecht is the beautifully bound and boxed four volume set edited by Theodore Tappert called Selected Writings of Martin Luther (Fortress Press, 2007).

And what a benefit all this is to students and scholars! Imagine one is researching a particular event (for example, the Diet of Augsburg) or controversy (say, the sacramentarian controversy). Brecht will not only introduce us to those events and the major works related to them, but will bring into the discussion the more obscure sermons and letters of Luther from that period that shed important light of Luther's thinking. Consistent with his emphasis on primary sources is the fact that Brecht almost never mentions contemporary scholars in the body of his text. Endnotes cite the appropriate locations in Luther's Works (both English and German editions) along with any relevant secondary literature (the latter mostly in German).

As I mentioned, this is not a traditional biography. The best biography of Luther in my opinion remains Roland Bainton's, Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther (Hendrickson Classic Biographies). In fact, Brecht seems to assume some knowledge of the key events, personages and locations on the part of his readers. Brecht includes helpful plates and illustrations, but no maps. He is less adept than Bainton and certain other biographers at painting the texture of a scene, or depicting the dramatic ebb and flow of events, or really helping us understand the driving inspiration behind some of the secondary characters. And to be honest, some narrative or descriptive portions can be tedious - for example, the initial chapter on Luther's ancestry and childhood (1:1-21) or the details of the struggle between Luther and the Zwickau city council (2:439-446). These are areas where Brecht seems to be striving for completeness or perhaps attempting to make an original contribution by unraveling the details of a complicated situation.

The weaknesses just listed are things we can live with. Brecht has rendered us a great service with the wisdom, time and talent that he has poured into these volumes. This leads me to a final comment on the quality of the printing. These volumes are printed by Fortress Press (now Augsburg Fortress). I called the publisher in September 2009 and discovered that all three of these volumes are now available ONLY in "Print-On-Demand." The volume I saw printed this way was very difficult to read, but with some effort I was able to track down copies from earlier, regular printings. Let's hope that the publisher will go back to a regular printing. "Print-On-Demand" is not the way such an extraordinary achievement should be treated - by a Lutheran press no less!

UPDATE: I have now completed the third volume and, as I expected, there are no changes necessary to my review above. Note that each volume has its own index, while volume three contains a additional, more comprehensive subject index covering the entire set. Finally, I assume that the "Print-On-Demand" problem noted above can be avoided entirely now with the appearance of the Kindle Edition.

Fascinating depth on the issues of the Reformation
By D. S. Bornus
This is the second of a trilogy covering Luther's life. (The other volumes are: "Martin Luther: His Road to Reformation," and "Martin Luther: The Preservation of the Church.") This edition takes us from the posting of the 95 Theses, the debate with Eck, the Diet of Worms and the major events of Luther's reformation. One gains great respect for the depth of Luther's insights and his courage in standing up for his understanding of the Gospel.

The author summarizes the content of many writings against/by Luther during this period. Particularly fascinating to me was the exchange between Erasmus' "The Freedom of the Will" and Luther's "On the Bondage of the Will." Two master theologians go at it head to head, describing the heart of the Gospel teaching, and whether we can do anything to merit salvation or whether it is all by God's grace. This is truly "meat" and not "milk" for the seeking reader, with enduring relevance for modern-day Christians.

The Book of Concord: The Confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, by Robert Kolb, Timothy J. Wengert

Commissioned in 1993, this new translation of The Book of Concord brings a new generation of scholarship and sensitivities to bear on the foundational texts of Lutheran identity. The fifth English translation since 1851, this edition succeeds that edited by Theodore Tappert published in 1959 by Muhlenburg Press.

A review of the text in light of a mountain of new scholarship and other factors dictated the new translation and apparatus, including changes in the English language over the past forty years, differences in the training and preparation of seminarians and pastors, limitations in the introductions and annotations to the various parts of the book, new knowledge of the history and theology of these very documents, and the occasional error in Tappert's translation.

Kolb and Wengert's team of leading Reformation historians was augmented by consultation with one hundred other scholars and teachers who use The Book of Concord continually, and two other teams of scholars who have reviewed the translations. In coming years, two volumes of related documents will follow.

Benefits of this new translation: Expanded introductions and annotations offer richer historical context New translation aims at accessible but accurate translation Format is easier to read and use Leading American scholars have been involved or consulted

Introduction From the second century on Christians have expressed the biblical faith in summaries that served to identify the church's public message. The Greek word symbol--a technical word for creed--identified the function of such summaries of the church's teaching as its identifying statement of belief, purpose, and mission. The Apostles' and Nicene Creeds both offered believers guidance for public instruction and witness and also served to regulate and evaluate the public theology of the church's teachers. They demarcated lines between errors that had attacked the faith and biblical truth.

When Emperor Charles V called upon the Lutheran princes and municipal governments to identify their public teaching in 1530 at the Diet of Augsburg, the Wittenberg theologians and their associates from other territories, under the leadership of Martin Luther's colleague, Philip Melanchthon, composed what they called a confession of the faith (after considering the label defense [apology]). That document, the Augsburg Confession, became recognized as the public symbol of the Evangelical Lutheran movement. It became the legal definition on which the political toleration of its adherents was based through the religious Peace of Augsburg of 1555. By 1555 the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles, and Luther's Catechisms were also being used alongside the Augsburg Confession to describe and define what the Wittenberg reformers intended as reform and thus to regulate ecclesiastical life in various territories that had accepted the Reformation.

The doctrinal controversies of the 1550s and 1560s necessitated further definition of public teaching, however, in the view of many Lutheran governments. Some of them sponsored the composition of additional confessions of faith, while others assembled confessional documents in collections called a corpus doctrinae (body of teaching). Melanchthon and other Wittenberg theologians had first used the term corpus doctrinae for the fundamental summary of the Christian faith, a term akin to analogy of faith. Later the term designated documents that could help determine the elements of the analogy of faith, and from 1560 it was employed to entitle a formal collection of such documents. In that year a printer in Leipzig, Ernst Vgelin, published a collection of the ancient creeds and eleven confessions and theological treatises from Melanchthon's pen as the Corpus doctrinae Philippicum. That collection became the legal definition of the faith in electoral Saxony in 1566 and in other lands at about the same time. Similar corpora doctrinae were published in a number of other principalities in the 1560s; they usually included Luther's Smalcald Articles and Catechisms as well as the Augsburg Confession and its Apology, along with one or more other local confessional documents. Two corpora assembled by Martin Chemnitz in 1576, for the principalities of Braunschweig-Lneburg and Braunschweig-Wolfenbttel, provided a model for the Formula of Concord.

The authors of the Formula of Concord responded to objections from followers of Melanchthon who treasured the Corpus doctrinae Philippicum, and therefore they did not use the term corpus doctrinae when they prepared the Formula for publication with the ancient creeds of the church, the Augsburg Confession and its Apology, and Luther's Smalcald Articles and Catechisms after the completion of the Formula of 1577. One of the leading figures in its composition, Jakob Andreae of the University of Tbingen, was commissioned to compose a preface for this collection of documents that would speak for the princes who had sponsored the drive for Lutheran reconciliation and unity which the Formula had climaxed. In it he sketched the history of the conflicts over the interpretation of Luther's teaching.

Andreae's efforts included tireless travels and diplomatic negotiations that finally brought Elector Ludwig of the Palatinate into concert with the other two leading Evangelical princes of the German Empire, the electors of Saxony and Brandenburg, August and Joachim II. These three, joined by eighty other princely and municipal governments, led 8,188 theologians into subscription of the Formula of Concord by 1580, and the Formula and other confessions were published as the Book of Concord on the fiftieth anniversary of the presentation of the Augsburg Confession, on 25 June 1580. The Book of Concord received criticism from certain quarters, particularly the followers of Matthias Flacius Illyricus regarding the doctrine of original sin expressed in the Formula, and from those whose spiritualizing view of the real presence of Christ's body and blood in the Lord's Supper led them to reject the Formula's sacramental theology and its Christology. Nonetheless, some two-thirds of German Protestants found in the Book of Concord an authoritative expression of their faith and a hermeneutical basis for interpreting scripture

Further Reading Highlights More Info on this BOC Edition
By Rich Futrell
After having a chance to read more of this new translation of the Book of Concord, I still conclude that this book is--overall--very good. Yes, the translation does pluralize some areas where the original was singular, such as Luther's explanation of the Ten Commandments in his Small Catechism. Nevertheless, such pluralizations seem natural to the modern ear and tongue and do not seem a deliberate ruse to avoid using "he, him, or his," such as the explanation of who is my neighbor. The translators and editors should not have allowed these subject-verb-predicate mismatches, but were probably allowed for political correctness. However, other areas are deliberately so worded for modern correctness, such as portion of the Smalcald Articles where the translators change singulars to plurals to avoid reference to male clergy. Translators are not to make something likeable to the modern reader but make it understandable. So my first impressions were off a bit, but not much on pluralizations for political correctness.
The references and historical background in the footnotes are superb and bests any BOC yet to come to print. This alone makes the book worth its purchase--so much so students of the Confessions should have this volume and use it! It was especially refreshing to see incorrect references in previous Book of Concord editions corrected in this edition.
The biggest possible "problem" with this BOC is its use of Melanchthon's second Latin version of the Apology as the basis for the translation. Kolb and Wengert do make a serious case for their decision, much of which has merit. I do not have the historical or theological qualifications, however, to say definitively if using Melanchton's second Latin version was the best choice or not, but readers should be aware of this decision.
In short, this edition does have some shortcomings of which readers should be aware. However, it is the most readable BOC to date and has the best footnotes of any BOC, bar none. Thus, if you want to read the Lutheran Confessions, then buy this edition and read it. Most of what I was looking for was after page 500.
By Roddy Camper
The supplier of the book produced a perfect specimen. Perfect condition and excellent shipping. However the book was not what I expected. Created in the 1500s with more triple worded alibis and long lengthy verbiage. You would think they were getting paid by the word. I was able to find what I was looking for, but I had a little divine help. I will donate it to a Lutheran church or a pastor friend of mine. Most of what I was looking for was after page 500.

The need today for this book cannot be overstated
By John Daniel Holloway
God the Economist is not a book promoting the values of Republicans or Democrats, of Tea Partiers or Socialists, or of Marxists or Libertarians. It is a book that asks the question, "What would Jesus do?" Douglas Meeks seeks to construct an economic ideology based on the model of the Trinity, and he does it better than most of the attempts I have seen. These are the reflections of a Christian dedicated to understanding the kind of economy Jesus wants us to look to as a goal. Whatever your economic ideals, this book will be a challenge.

Norman Gottwald aptly stated in his review of the book that Meeks "reads theology economically and economics theologically." Meeks begins by showing the lack of focus on economics in the church, as well as the reluctance of economists to speak of God. Whether or not the church addresses economics, it has a profound effect on how Christians live their lives, and how churches are run. And whether or not economists acknowledge God-concepts, God-concepts are at work in their economic ideologies. Both groups, says Meeks, will find their ultimate guide in the community of the Triune God, modeled in Jesus Christ.

Meeks provides that an essential move toward Christ-like economics is abandoning the emphasis on scarcity. Rather than focusing on hunger and gain, the economy should be centered around the livelihood of the members of the community (or, to use his word, the 'household'). Livelihood is a God-given human right. As children of God, we have been blessed with the right to experience his righteous abundance. When scarcity takes over, accumulation becomes the goal. Focus is taken off of the household and placed on one's self. Walter Brueggemann laid this out in a presentation on the narrative of accumulation vs. the narrative of abundance: an ideology of scarcity leads to anxiety about not having enough, which leads to self-focused amassment, and then monopoly and oppression.

The book gets pretty technical at times, but never too technical. Much of what Meeks says is quite profound. If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter, you'll know that I've been posting quotes for days. What the book could have used more of are ideas for practical application. Meeks provides a great framework with which to pursue practical application, but he himself does not offer a whole lot in that arena. This isn't necessarily a flaw, though, as it seems hard to imagine his ideas not inspiring creative action.

The need today for a book like God the Economist cannot be overstated, as the church continues to lose sight of Christ's model for money management, our nation is experiencing greater and greater wealth inequality, and our middle class is growing weak in the face of an ever-amassing few who exploit workers, accumulate wealth and power, and gain more and more sway in the government of our society. We are in desperate need of Jesus' model of other-focused generosity, rooted in the abundance of God. I encourage all who care about the economy, Christian or not, to read this book. And even more, I implore Christians to read it, as it contributes significant insights to how the church can and should approach society in the future.

'A Fundamental Practical Theology' achieves a high degree of integration between more academic theological concerns and the practice of ministry (and) challenges those who have given up on the relevance of theology to reconsider their opinion. At the same time it summons theologians to depart from purely academic discourse and take up the cause of congregational ministry.

Important and Influential
By Jeremy
Besides taking a revolutionary look at theology ("all theology is practical"), Browning shows very clearly that the embarrassed silence that has fallen between ministers and scholars is unreasonable. The four movements of practical theology drive home the deficiencies of theory-to-practice models, while the five dimensions of practical reasoning and moral thinking underscore that this way of viewing things belongs to the philosopher as much to the pastor.

Being Human: Race, Culture, and Religion, by Dwight N. Hopkins

Dwight Hopkins, whose important work in Black Theology has mediated class theological concerns through the prism of African American culture, here offers a fresh take on theological anthropology. Rather than defined "the human" as one eternal or inviolable essence, however, Hopkins looks to the multiple and conflicting notions of the human in contemporary thought, and particularly three key variables: culture, self, and race. Hopkins' critical reframing of these concepts firmly locates human endeavor, development, transcendence, and liberation in the particular messiness of struggle and strife.

I could not finish it
By D. Washington
This book was just too difficult for me to finish. Being a college student studying sociology I was not able to follow the author. The first few chapters were difficult to figure out exactly where he was going and what the purpose of the book was exactly.

I will certainly try again in a few years after I complete my studies, hopefully it will make more sense but at this time I could only get through maybe 3 chapters before I accepted that I was reading the words but missing the point.
