Charles E. Curran is Elizabeth Scurlock Professor of Human Values at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and the coeditor of sixteen previous volumes of Readings in Moral Theology for Paulist Press.

A BRIEF BOOK BY A PROMINENT (AND CONTROVERSIAL) CATHOLIC THEOLOGIAN

Theologian Charles Curran (b. 1934) was ordained as a Catholic priest, and in 1967 he was removed from his tenured faculty position teaching moral theology at Catholic University of America because of his favorable views on birth control, but after a strong faculty protest, he was reinstated. However, in 1986 he was again removed from his position because of his views, rejected an offer to teach social ethics (rather than theology) at the university, and ultimately lost his case and currently teaches at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
He states in the Preface to this 1993 book, "I hope that this volume contributes something to the individual churches and to the ecumenical dialogue in general about how the mainstream churches deal with moral realities in the life of their community and the broader human society."
He writes, "People who share faith in Jesus Christ and live in the same Christian community of the church can and will disagree about the judgment of the nature of the fetus," adding that "I hold somewhat conservative positions on abortion and euthanasia and am willing to defend these positions in all forums, and above all, in the church."
He suggests, "The separation of church and state was never meant to imply the separation of religion or church and society. Religions and churches have something to contribute to a more just, free, participative, and sustainable world." He also observes, "Single issue interest groups cutting across church and denominational lines have contributed to this decline of commitment to the particular denomination or church... For some the commitment to a particular cause or interest can assume more importance than the commitment to the church community as such."
He concludes toward the end of the book, "This book insists that the church is primarily a catholic community of moral discourse, with discourse understood to include practice and actions, so that the church is not just reduced to a debating society."
