Great title but few "cross examinations"

I am not a theologian but I have read enough to know when I've been hit with a my yearly allotment of "feminist theology" Some very interesting ideas but look at the cover it says it all__ this unfortunate emphasis keeps getting in my way. (I'm sure its my problem). The editor, I feel, improperly tags Karl Barth as a Universalist to support her position. I think many would take exception .

Before being set free by the reading of Romans 1:17, Martin Luther was enslaved to the bondage of works righteousness. He was acutely aware of his need for salvation but sought it through the means of works instead of finding it through faith in Christ. Upon discovering the "righteousness of God" Luther was set free from his bondage and was able to become a slave to Christ. It is this freedom of the gospel, which Luther sets forth as being the freedom for the Christian. Through faith alone a believer is justified in Christ and set free to live a life of obedience compelled by the love of Christ. Thus freedom to service through the gospel of Christ is at the heart of Luther's treatise The Freedom of a Christian.
He begins the work by summarizing the Christian life in paradoxical fashion. He writes, "A Christian is a perfectly free Lord of all, subject to none." And he continues by stating, "A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to none." Luther correctly believed that these two assertions, although seemingly contradictory, are nonetheless biblical and he seeks to show how they work together in the rest of this treatise.
It is only through faith alone in the gospel of Jesus Christ whereby one is saved and is given the free gift of Christ's righteousness and the perfect freedom found in being united with Christ. Thus the only thing necessary for Christian life, righteousness, and freedom is the Word of God, which is the gospel. Without the Word of God there is no help for the soul. Yet a soul that has the Word of God is found lacking nothing.
Luther's work asserts the underlining truth of the Christian life: that we are freed through the death of Christ to service. We are freed from the bondage and slavery of the law, sin and Satan and we are now chained in freedom to obedience toward Christ. Freedom for the Christian is escape from the bondage of sin and submission to the bondage of Christ. It is only in submission and service to Christ where one is found truly free.
One of the most evident features of Luther's work is that justification is through faith alone. He makes it clear that there is no work, which can accompany faith to bring about justification. Works cannot, and never will justify. Only faith in Christ as a gift of God will justify a sinner. The importance of sola fidei for Luther is that if works can justify then there is no need for the gospel. Therefore Luther's insistence upon faith alone is foundational to upholding the biblical gospel. If works are added then the gospel is bunk.
The law-gospel distinction, which comes out in this treatise, is most significant for the Christian life. The law truly kills, but thankfully it is not an end in itself but points to the gospel, which is life. The chains of the law steer to the unbound grace in the gospel of Christ. While Luther seems to place a dichotomy between the two testaments as one being of commandments (OT) and the other being of promises (NT) it would be safer to say that there is both law and gospel, commandments and promises, in both testaments.
Luther's teaching on union with Christ most helpfully highlights the very foundational nature of this doctrine to the whole of salvation. It is by virtue of this union with Christ whereby a sinner is found righteous. By faith alone one is united with Christ and made a partaker of the perfect life and the perfect death of Christ. That sinner is then buried, and raised up with Christ. Indeed Christ's righteousness swallows up our sinfulness. It is by this glorious uniting symbolized in a wedding where Christ marries his bride the church. And for Luther it is the "wedding ring of faith" which unites believers to Christ.
Luther also hits an important note in writing, "So let him who wishes to do good works begin not with the doing of works, but with believing, which makes the person good, for nothing makes a man good except faith, or evil except unbelief." The only true works, which are good, are those works that are born out of faith. A good tree will produce good fruit and likewise a dead tree dead fruit. Faith alone produces a desire for righteous living, which produces good works compelled by the love of Christ.
Luther's The Freedom of a Christian is an important work in that it sets in bold relief the necessity of faith alone for justification. Works cannot justify and it is only through faith in Christ whereby one is saved. It is within the inner man having been justified where good works find their foundation and it is through the outer man where good works find their expression. Truly good works can only flow from a renewed heart. Such a renewed heart is freed from the bondage to sin and is now compelled to love Christ and others. A true Christian is freed from sin unto service toward Christ. This free servitude is at the heart of Christian freedom.

The Fire and Hammer of the Word of God (Jeremiah 23:29)

Martin Luther's treatise "Christian Liberty" (or "The Freedom of a Christian") is perhaps the most powerful and concise presentation of the Christian life ever written. I cannot recommend this work highly enough. I rank this among the very best of Luther's works (and that is really saying something). If an inexpensive copy were still in publication I would buy every copy to give as gifts to friends and family. The power, discernment, brevity and readability of this work make a true gem among Reformation writings (and Christian writings in general). Here you will find the essence of the spirit of the Reformation distilled into a guide for practical, biblical living.

With the clarity and bold authority of a true prophet, Luther sets forth the whole of the Christian life in two theses: "A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all." We are free from sin and the law (subject to none) but slaves to Christ in love (subject to all). As Paul writes in Romans 6:22, "But now...you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God."

Luther writes as a shepherd of the common people and the tone and content differ greatly from his better-known debate-oriented works (ie. Bondage of the Will, 95 Theses). The doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone is the heart and soul of Luther's message, founded upon a firm conviction in the authority of scripture alone.

He writes, "One thing, and only one thing, is necessary for Christian life, righteousness, and freedom. That one thing is the most holy Word of God, the gospel of Christ."

And again, "It ought to be the first concern of every Christian to lay aside all confidence in works and increasingly to strengthen faith alone and through faith to grow in the knowledge, not of works, but of Christ Jesus, who suffered and rose for him.... No other work makes a Christian.... 'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent' (John 6:29)."

And regarding our service to God, "...In this way the stronger member may serve the weaker, and we may be sons of God, each caring for and working for the other, bearing one another's burdens and so fulfilling the law of Christ. This is a truly Christian life. Here faith is truly active through love. That is, it finds expression in works of the freest service, cheerfully and lovingly done, with which a man willingly serves another without hope of reward; and for himself he is satisfied with the fullness and wealth of his faith."

I cannot vouch for the quality of this particular volume (the actual work is only 30 standard pages long), but the treatise has been published in a number of other individual volumes and in at least one very worthy compilation entitled "Martin Luther's Basic Theological Writings" (ed. Timothy F. Lull, 1989) which also contains a number of other infinitely worthy works such as Luther's "Small Catechism," the stirring "Meditation of Christ's Passion," and the thesis chapters of the foundational "Bondage of the Will." Any version of this monumental treatise is bound to bless you. It is the fire and the hammer of the Word of God to consume the adversaries and break apart the stone hearts of impenitant men.

A great ONE-TWO punch against the abuses by the Catholic Church in Luther's time

This powerful little book is a solid, one-two punch from Luther about the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church at the time. It is an excellent synopsis of grace and the freedom of Christians. Where we were once enslaved by sin and could do nothing good, when saved by Grace, God is able to work good through us. That is, when saved, we are then truly free.

The second punch, if you will, is the letter Luther sent to Pope Leo X wherein he tells the pope that Luther is a friend of the church but speaks out against the sacreligious and sinful Indulgences being sold to masses by those around the Pope. Luther debunks the notion that we can buy our own salvation.

I'd recommend that you read the introduction, then the letter, then the actual essay, and THEN reread the letter to the Pope because it will speak so much louder.

A BRIEF BOOK BY A PROMINENT (AND CONTROVERSIAL) CATHOLIC THEOLOGIAN

Theologian Charles Curran (b. 1934) was ordained as a Catholic priest, and in 1967 he was removed from his tenured faculty position teaching moral theology at Catholic University of America because of his favorable views on birth control, but after a strong faculty protest, he was reinstated. However, in 1986 he was again removed from his position because of his views, rejected an offer to teach social ethics (rather than theology) at the university, and ultimately lost his case and currently teaches at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

He states in the Preface to this 1993 book, "I hope that this volume contributes something to the individual churches and to the ecumenical dialogue in general about how the mainstream churches deal with moral realities in the life of their community and the broader human society."

He writes, "People who share faith in Jesus Christ and live in the same Christian community of the church can and will disagree about the judgment of the nature of the fetus," adding that "I hold somewhat conservative positions on abortion and euthanasia and am willing to defend these positions in all forums, and above all, in the church."

He suggests, "The separation of church and state was never meant to imply the separation of religion or church and society. Religions and churches have something to contribute to a more just, free, participative, and sustainable world." He also observes, "Single issue interest groups cutting across church and denominational lines have contributed to this decline of commitment to the particular denomination or church... For some the commitment to a particular cause or interest can assume more importance than the commitment to the church community as such."

He concludes toward the end of the book, "This book insists that the church is primarily a catholic community of moral discourse, with discourse understood to include practice and actions, so that the church is not just reduced to a debating society."

In the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, Christian scholars portrayed Judaism as the dark religious backdrop to the liberating events of Jesus' life and the rise of the early church. Since the 1950s, however, a dramatic shift has occurred in the study of Judaism, driven by new manuscript and archaeological discoveries and new methods and tools for analyzing sources. George Nickelsburg here provides a broad and synthesizing picture of the results of the past fifty years of scholarship on early Judaism and Christianity. He organizes his discussion around a number of traditional topics: scripture and tradition, Torah and the righteous life, God's activity on humanity's behalf, agents of God's activity, eschatology, historical circumstances, and social settings. Each of the chapters discusses the findings of contemporary research on early Judaism, and then sketches the implications of this research for a possible reinter-pretation of Christianity. Still, in the author's view, there remains a major Jewish-Christian agenda yet to be developed and implemented.

Valuable Summary

The stated goal of Nickelsburg's Ancient Judaism and Christian Origins is to answer two questions: "How have the Dead Sea Scrolls and revolutions in the methodology of biblical scholarship in the past two generations changed our perceptions of Judaism in the Greco-Roman period, and how do-or should-these developments lead us to rethink the origins of Christianity?" (xv). Nickelsburg argues that NT scholars ignore or neglect the rich harvest of early Jewish studies, much to their and their students' detriment. His thesis is that, within a history-of-religions perspective, the insights from the study of early Judaism necessitates a reevaluation of our understanding of earliest Christianity. While it is the case that many groundbreaking discoveries and advances of the last fifty years challenge our understanding of ancient Judaism, the degree of reassessment of early Christianity, and Christian theology in particular, is still an open question.

Each chapter of the work is divided into two main sections: the first outlines the findings of contemporary research in early Judaism while the second considers some of the implications of these findings for the origins of Christianity. In chapter one ("Scripture and Tradition") Nickelsburg takes up the complex field of biblical interpretation and formation. In chapter two ("Torah and the Righteous Life") he considers the contentious issue of the relationship between the law and righteousness in first-century Judaism. This complex of issues bleeds over into Nickelsburg's discussion of "God`s Activity in Behalf of Humanity" and "Agents of God`s Activity" (chapters three and four respectively). The heightened eschatological expectation in all its varieties within postbiblical Judaism forms the content of chapter five ("Eschatology"). And chapter six ("Contexts and Settings") considers the social, ideological, and political situation within which the documents of postbiblical Judaism were written.

Finally chapter seven ("Conclusions and Implications") draws these insights together to argue that there are many more similarities between Judaism and Christianity than more polemic paradigms allow. This is a very important work produced by a eminently respected scholar (see the new two volume Festschrift: George W. E. Nickelsburg in Perspective: An Ongoing Dialogue of Learning [Leiden: Brill, 2003]). And though working from a history-of-religions perspective, it should be read by all serious students of the NT in order to correct an outdated understanding of first-century Judaism and its relationship to early Christianity. The work will benefit upper level university students and postgraduates along with scholars in other fields as an introduction to this complex set of issues. The two major shortcomings of the work are the lack of an extended bibliography for further research and the lack of a subject index.

Not For the Layman

The author says in his foreword -- although not in so many words -- that the book is not for laymen, and I'm no professional in the field. There are some nuggets that even a layman can pick out, and I have found several. [I'm not quite halfway through it.] The foreword does not say -- although one could read between the lines, so to speak -- that the book does not purport to be an impartial history or explanation of the origins of Christianity. It is very much for the believer, which I am not. Nevertheless, as I said, there are some nuggets even for the nonbeliever who, for whatever reason, is interested in the origins of Christianity. And I am.

There are good books on this subject including "Who wrote the New ...

This book is not what it claims to be. First of all, no part of it is about ancient Judaism. Second of all, not only does it purport to be a scholarly work but it claims to be so scholarly that it will change the paradigm. This book gives us the same old spin which is a view of the Hebrew from a believing Christian's perspective. Before the birth of Christ, a person could walk into a bookstore in Alexandria and buy the Septuagint. This book describes an evolving Jewish body of writing which leads us to Christ. There are good books on this subject including "Who wrote the New Testament" by Mack. Many others too.

About the Author
Martin J. Mulder was born in Ter Aar, The Netherlands, in 1923. He studied theology at the Free University of Amsterdam and Semitic Languages at Leiden University. He was professor of Semitic Languages at the Free University of Amsterdam (1970-1979) and professor of Old Testament at Leiden University (1979-1989), and also director of the Peshitta Institute of the same university. He published a large number of studies on Israelite Religion, the Old Testament and the Ancient Versions, and on Hebrew and Aramaic. Martin Mulder died in 1994.

Harry Sysling was born in Voorst, The Netherlands, in 1947. He studied theology and Semitic Languages at the Free University of Amsterdam and received his PhD in 1991 from the University of Leiden. He lectured in Rabbinic Hebrew at Leiden University, and worked as a translator for the New Dutch Bible Translation. He is presently engaged in research on targumic studies at the Theological University of Kampen. He has published principally in the area of Hebrew and Aramaic.

Excellent anthology of articles on the Hebrew Bible

This volume, edited by Martin Mulder and Harry Sysling, is a priceless collection of studies written by biblical scholars on the Hebrew Bible (Mikra). Anyone interested in the Mikra should have this volume in his/her library. It covers the whole spectrum of topics under the book's subheading "text, translation, reading and interpretation." Each study is well written and very thorough with references, bibliography and occasional illustrations or photographs.

The first several articles deal mostly with the biblical text itself, from the alphabet, writing system, literacy in the ancient world, scribal practices, reading cycles, versions of the text, textual transmission to canonization of the text and formation of the Hebrew Bible. Then, the focus shifts to discussing various methods of interpretation of the text of the Hebrew Bible across time and by various groups. This ranges from biblical interpretation at Qumran to biblical interpretation as attested in Rabbinic literature, in writings of Josephus and Philo, to biblical interpretation by Gnostics and Early Christians, to name a few. The list is simply too long, but it provides probably the most thorough coverage of the topic to be found in a single volume.

The beauty of this volume is not only the depth and breadth with which it covers the Hebrew Bible, but also in the fact that the articles, while arranged in a logical order, are independent of each other. Thus one can pick up virtually anywhere in the book and read the topic he or she is interested in without having to read the preceding chapters. However, with that said, the articles are well written and should be accessible to both scholars and laymen alike. So the reader will certainly be edified by reading just about any article in the book. I highly recommend it.

It's written both for the academic and the interested layperson. Books like this are difficult to locate nowadays, but are well worth the effort.

The Bible is not just another book of myths!

Especially since the dawn of the “New Atheist” movement (but long before as well) I’ve been hearing as a chant ‘The bible’s a book of myths just like the other ancient writings.’ I’ve spoken with countless people who claim this, yet, none of them admitted to carefully studying them or even incidentally reading them, to be capable of providing an honest assessment or evaluation.

Yes, I’ve forgotten much of the Greek mythology I’ve read, but I still remember enough of it and certainly of the Bible to know there are major differences in their writings and that it really isn’t ‘like the other ancient writings’ at all. I wondered if anyone anywhere ever wrote anything comparing these writings so one day I sat down and searched Amazon.com, finding this book; just what I was looking for. Will Durrant writes of many nationalistic/cultural differences, author John Pairman Brown analyzes differences (and things in common) mainly by written record.

As a reminder, the author didn’t write this book to vindicate biblical writings over the standard Greek. It’s clear, by the writing, that the author doesn’t see the Bible as the infallible, inspired word of God. This actually is an advantage when discussing such a topic to others.

As one of the highest authorities on the subject, John Pairman Brown easily, took years, decades of time and study, and distinguishes what is historically factual much better than most as far as I know of. In his honesty, the author acknowledges the higher historical accuracies in the Bible. While presenting what the writings have in common, he also shows the differences and many are most extreme and numerous.

Understandably, most of the differences between the Bible and ancient Greek writings are primarily the religious/philosophical points. Examples - Hebrews are monotheistic; Greeks believe in many gods, Yahweh is a God of nature order; Greeks degraded order, Moses information was acquired over generations, Greeks were just one man’s observations, Hebrew had a fixed order/laws; Greeks none, Hebrews - no statues of humans or animals; Greeks plenty; Hebrews resurrection of the body, Greeks immortal soul; Yahweh commonly acknowledged as a Shepherd protector; Greek gods, no. This comparison can go on and on and it does throughout the book.

Of course merely being different doesn’t make it more accurate, yet John Pairman Brown regularly comments on biblical historical facts and accounts that too quickly get dismissed as “myth” by others... “Wherever we can make a comparison.... Israel retains a dignified realism in descriptions of the earth and a sober transcendence about its God.” especially in comparison with the fantastic creation accounts of the Greeks (carving the earth and sun out of a giant shield, and Many other Greek - and other - creation accounts we may know of) yet God simply “created.”

If anything; I would liked to have read more on the origin of the letter-system of the Hebrews and Greeks (Aleph, Alpha and so on). In John Pairman Brown’s chapter on paradise, he doesn’t explain why Solomon’s use of ‘pardes’ wasn’t the original use of it though it precedes all others by 300 years or so - minor as it is.

So, if anyone should insist the Bible is no different from other “myths” here’s one more place to see otherwise.
