Simon Bekker is the coeditor of Reflections on Identity in Four African Cities. He is a professor emeritus in sociology at the University of Stellenbosch, a former professor of development studies at Rhodes University, and the former director of the Center for Social and Development Studies at the University of Natal. Göran Therborn is a sociologist who has served as a professor at Cambridge and Uppsala Universities and as codirector of the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences. He launched a globally comparative project on cities of power, focusing on capital cities.

The diaphora of creation in the divine logoi

Nesteruk goes through a number of major issues in big science to show how each one ends up at an antinomy (Kantian style) which can only be "resolved" by seeing the tension itself as a divinely mandated pointer towards the diaphora in all creation. The universe, in other words, points to God not only because it is coherent, but also because it is incoherent (in se); as these two premises clash antinomically, they point even deeper to the very nature of Nature as diaphoric (split) between realities manifest to dianoia (natural, empirical reason) and the logoi, rooted in God, known by the nous by grace. To read this book more profitably, it will help to have a fair grasp of Orthodox theology and Kant's legacy.

I found the structure of the book a bit dizzying at times, until I "got it" a few chapters in: it's a set up job (but not a straw man), like one chapter-long article from a scholastic manual. "It would seem that creation is not a divine work since it manifests the following antinomy." "On the contrary, creation is a divine work because the antinomy indicates the diaphora (Greek: difference, split) in creation as a contingent work from a Divine source." Each antinomy gets a chapter, after some introductory chapters on the history of science in the West and a dense grounding in Orthodox metaphysics. At times, this book bent my head. Hooray!

Nesteruk has provided a fine resource for the philosophy of science to have a crack at. Very appealing was Nesteruk's emphasis on science as a form of worship (Nesteruk being a theoretical physicist and all modes of life being properly subsumed by their theo-logical foundation). Alas, I feel his dismissal of S. Jaki's and R. Hooykas as idealistic in their treatment of history was off-base. But no book is perfect.

Although there seems to be an increase in interest in Eastern Orthodoxy, there is very little understanding that this view of Christianity is indeed as far as the east is from the west.

This book bridges the gap in thinking and practice of Eastern Christianity where the subject of science is concerned, and is a decent primer of the thought process and practice of Eastern Orthodoxy as it intersects with western thought especially the compartmentalism and reductionism of science. It begins the dialogue and path to understand that Eastern Orthodoxy is much more concerned with verified truth, truthful practice and personal responsibility than with method and opinion.

About the Author
Eberhard Bethge was born in 1909 in Warchau, and attended the universities of Knigsberg, Berlin, Wien, Tbingen and Halle, receiving the Doctor of Divinity degree. From 1935 to 1940 he assisted Dietrich Bonhoeffer at the preacher's seminary in Finkenwalde and, after the Gestapo closed the seminary, in the underground pastorates. In 1953 he became pastor of the German congregation in London. He remained therre until 1961, except for one year 1957--1958) spent as visiting lecturer at Havard Divinity School. In 1962 he was awarded an honorary degree of D.D. at Glasgow University. From 1961 until his retirement in 1975 he was director of the Institute of Continuing Education for Ministers of the Evangelical church of the Rhineland in Rengsdorf. In 1966 he was Visiting Professor at Chicago Theological Seminary and in 1976 was Fosdick Professor at Union Seminary, New York.

A close friend and relative of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's, he edited Ethics and Letters and Papers from Prison, and is the author of Bonhoeffer: Exile and Martyr. He is also the editor of the German edition of Bonhoeffer's Collected Works, now being published in translation by Fortress Press. Eberhard Bethge's exhaustive biography of Bonhoeffer is recognized throughout the world as the definitive biography.

Now I know Bonhoeffer

In this work, Bonhoeffer's student and friend brought me closer to Bonhoeffer than I thought possible. Previously, I had thought Letters and Papers From Prison was as close as I could get to understanding the "religionless" Christian -I was wrong. Bethge's opus gives an incisive look into the formation of Bonhoeffer the man and the theologian which sheds more light on his Christian fortitude in the Nazi tempest. I whole-heartedly recommend this work for it has been an inspiration to me as a human being as well as a student of theology

Bonhoeffer: Man For His Times & Ours

Upon starting this book I knew very little about Bonhoeffer; I had read some of Ethics and I knew of his murder by the Gestapo. Thus, there was something new on every page for me, and despite the book's length it never seemed oppressive in detail. In fact if the author can be faulted for one thing it is his lack of information about Bonhoeffer's courtship and engagement; which is discussed almost as an aside. On every other point though, the author did a wonderful job. His explanations of Bonhoeffer's theology are clear and understandable. Considering that much of what Bonhoeffer took for granted, theologically speaking, is alien to the American intellectual tradition that is a great accomplishment. The book is also a welcome antidote to the conception of 1930's and 1940's Germany as synonymous with Hitler and National Socialism. For even under the totalitarian state there were still men like Bonhoeffer who stood up against the regime

An outstanding, detailed and gripping story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Christian fortitude. Eberhard Bethge's exquisitely detailed knowledge and references about Bonhoeffer's life, from beginning to end is a wonderful tribute to Bonhoeffer. The reader asks the question what possessed Bonhoeffer to pursue the dream of a restive German society with Christianity abounding. Unless one has lived under a dictatorship perhaps this makes one restless. This book provides clear and concise answers.

This short book argues a threefold thesis: first, that the same actions, events, texts, or phenomenon are perceived and interpreted from different points of view, e.g., commonsense, biology, theology, etc.; second, that these interpretations take place on several interacting levels, namely, as descriptions, as explanations, as evaluations, and as giving meaning; and third, that the resulting interactions between points of view and levels take three typical forms: rejection, absorption, and accommodation. A recurring motif is that genuine conflict is present and unavoidable, yet interaction continues to be inevitable. Thus accommodation ends up being the most adequate stance both descriptively and normatively. A truly thoughtful and probing book.
