Determining the Form: Structures for Preaching (Elements of Preaching), by O. Wesley Allen

This fifth title in the Elements of Preaching series offers preaching students and clergy an overview of some of the most common sermonic forms and provides insights for determining which forms are most - and least - amenable to the claim that they want to make in their sermon. Many, if not most, sermons wind up being somewhat formless and thus less effective than they might be in communicating the gospel. Rather than training students in a single rhetorical form, this volume will demonstrate a variety of options without advocating for any particular form.

Accomplished preachers can think of rhetorical strategy in a nuanced manner, but beginning preachers are well-served by having a knapsack of simple sermonic forms they can turn to when building a sermon out of a sermonic claim. This book will offer preachers a strong foundation in considering sermonic form and a handful of basic, reliable rhetorical structures to use in the pulpit.

A Primer on Form
By Matthew Morine
Review of "Determining the Form"

O. Wesley Allen Jr. seems to be academically qualified to address the various structure of sermon for the modern age. He is a professor of homiletics and worship at Lexington Theological Seminary. He is an ordained elder within the Methodist church. Allen is well versed in the homiletic conversation, but might lack some practical knowledge that comes from preaching in a congregation year after year.
The author contributes to a theological library because his book is a quick reference for the various types of form that are generally used in the America pulpit. He highlights the essential qualities of a sermon which are unity, movement, and climax. No matter what form is used, these elements provide the foundation for a good sermon. The author's intended purpose is to give the local preacher a quick guide to the different types of structure for sermons. The book is not an in-depth look into each form, but is merely a survey of the options available for preaching that will connect. The purpose of the book is to start the discussion into the various forms; there is still a lot of work to do to master the different types of structure. This is the starting point as the author believes that a minister to incorporate various types of structures in the pulpit. He advises against using the same structure over and over again from week to week. The author wants to expand the preacher's tool box for sermons.
The author details the common elements in all good sermons to establish the foundation for the various structures used to preach to begin the work. He provides the wide-angle view than zooms in to the various formats. He uses 1 Kings 19:1-15a has the foundational text to illustrate each of the forms. He highlights the propositional sermon, the exegesis-interpretation-application sermon, the verse-by-verse sermon, the four pages sermon, the valley sermon, the new hearing sermon, and the negative to positive sermon. In a brief overview, the author shows the major characteristics of these types of structure. At the end of each section, he provides the skeleton structure that he would use for the 1 Kings 19:1-15a text. There are also charts for each type of sermon. In each chapter Allen gives the positives and negatives for each form. At the end, the author instructs the preacher that he does not have to be mastered by the form. The form is for the preacher, and in appropriate times the preacher is to exercise flexibility to communicate his points. The form is not the master, but a tool in the transformational process.
Determining the Form was an excellent introduction to the various forms available in preaching. The chapters were well organized from the old methods to new methods in preaching. The only problem in this area was that the book is static in time. Form methodology continues to change, and a discussion of Andy Stanley's form of "Me, You, God, You, Us" would have been beneficial.
The author seemed balanced in his approach. Sometimes authors have a particular bias for a certain form. Even though the propositional model is older, the author still praised it. He saw that the "university form" still had some merit in today's pulpit. He did not automatically go with the newer is better approach.
The case study aspect of looking at 1 Kings 19:1-15a was helpful. It was a nice illustrative section to flesh out the particular structure that was being overviewed in each chapter. The examples provided a picture of what a sermon would look like in that form. For a author that might be given to more of an abstract view of preaching, he did a good job in making each section practical with this sermon text.
Allen showed that the "valley structure" seems to be the normative for the majority of narrative sermons. He correctly pointed out that too many preachers take the congregation to low into the valley but the sermon ending to too weak to carry them out. Some of the other forms, like the "negative to the positive" and the "New Hearing Sermon" can be over used as much as the "University Sermon." After a while, the listeners will tire of constant delayed gratification ploys. The members will catch on to the structure and tune the minister out until the end.
The popularity of forms is constantly changing. A few years ago, all the fanfare was given to "expository sermons." This form was the top form for a lot of preachers. The key, as the author seemed to indicate is not one form above the other, but all forms have a place and time in the pulpit. The great the flexibility of forms the higher success he seems to believe the minister will have. Though, this is probably true, one must be aware of over doing variety.
Overall, the author accomplished his mission of introducing various forms so that a minister will have more to draw from for a week to week basis.

Good Things Come in Small Packages
By Tyler Robbins
This was an assigned textbook for my Homiletics III course at Oklahoma Christian University, alongside the seminal text by Thomas G. Long, "The Witness of Preaching." Having taken two previous homiletics courses, and being an upperclassman with not a little bit of previous study already under my belt, I had heard of many of the big names in the homiletical world, including Long, Fred Craddock, David Buttrick, Eugene Lowry, etc. However, I had never heard of O. Wesley Allen, Jr., nor this "Elements of Preaching" series that he edited. Considering that, along with the fact that "Determining the Form" was a mere 96 pages - closer to a large pamphlet than a book proper - I was originally skeptical. After all, how often is it that your professors assign textbooks that you actually enjoy?

However, regardless of my trepidation, it WAS an assigned text. Therefore, being a good student (or at least, not a bad one), I read it. What I found thrilled and excited me to my core. As a preaching nerd, I was ecstatic. In less than 100 pages, the good Dr. Allen had managed to synthesize, describe, and illustrate the essential aspects of no fewer than eight classic sermonic forms (the University or "Three Point Sermon" form, the Exegesis-Interpretation-Application form, the Verse-By-Verse form, the "Four Pages" form described and popularized by Paul Scott Wilson, the Valley Form, the "Lowry Loop" form originally described by Eugene Lowry, the Classic African American form, the New Hearing form, and the Negative to Positive form). What is just as exciting as what Allen writes, though, is how he writes it.

Rather than simply describing the above forms in a written fashion, Allen diagrammed out each form, both as a general template of the form, divorced from any specific text or or topic, and then inputting into each form a sermon from an example text - 1 Kings 19:1-15a, where we see Elijah flee to Mt. Horeb in fear, and there experience a theophany, not in the preceding wind, earthquake, or fire, but in the voice of YHWH, amidst total silence. From this pericope, Allen crafts example sermons for each group of forms (since some forms, such as the Valley form, the "Lowry Loop" form, and the Classic African American form, for example, are so similar in their structure and function, Allen inputs only one sermon diagram for this group; however, the diagram can easily be lifted from the Valley template he selected, and attached to the other two forms with relative ease). These sermons diagrammed out by Allen allow readers to see what each form would look like when connected to an actual sermon, easing the mental translation from abstract theory to concrete practice. With each diagrammed sermon, Allen uses a distinct sermon, rather than trying to shoehorn the same message into several different forms.

In addition to these described forms and accompanying diagrams, Allen also includes two very short chapters at the book's opening, entitled "Why Form Matters" and "Unity, Movement, and Climax: Essential Qualities of All Sermonic Forms", respectively. In the first chapter, he essentially argues that sermonic forms are never neutral, and that selecting a form that will complement, not hinder, the assigned text is a crucial aspect of good preaching. The second chapter's title is fairly self-explanatory - he argues that regardless of the selected form, a good sermon is unified in its content and delivery, ever-progressing and never stagnant in its movement, and ultimately reaching a climax that will "itch" the "scratch" (his language) that the movement has built up. There is also a brief afterword that describes how Allen hopes readers will use this book, and an annotated "For Further Reading" bibliography, which credits the source material used in compiling his book.

In conclusion, this is a book that every woman or man who aspires to preach - whether they be a 16-year-old whose small congregation has tapped to do a bit of preaching in response to some detected talent or giftedness, a 26-year-old fresh out of seminary, or a 50+ year-old veteran that is seeking to refresh their preaching and refill their homiletical tool box - should own. While I highly recommend that those who have the means read the primary source material as well, and bask at length in the writings of the great homileticians, this is an indispensable tool for someone who has all of those tomes on their library shelf, but doesn't have time between Monday or Tuesday and the impending "Zero Hour" of Sunday morning to re-read them all. Perhaps you don't have time to skip 2,000+ pages of material, but you can certainly flip through 96 pages and reacquaint yourself with options. In that vein, this is an excellent, practical, extraordinarily welcomed contribution to the world of preaching and homiletics. With this volume (and indeed, with Allen's entire "Elements of Preaching" series, which I am in the process of collecting), good things do indeed come in small packages!

You've done your exegesis--now the real work begins.
By Amazon Customer
This is a great little book to help the learner preacher get from exegesis to sermon.

You've done your exegesis, now what? How do you get from that point to a real sermon--one that isn't simply a teaching sermon about what the reading meant when it was written? This little book gives outlines and examples of several forms that sermons can take and helps the reader figure out which will help him or her convey to the congregation the message God wants heard. English majors may find the approach simplistic, but for this former Engineer, the diagrams and examples were just the help he needed.

From the Back Cover
What was crucifixion? Why was Jesus of Nazareth executed and what really happened? Gerard Sloyan begins with history and traces the development of the New Testament accounts of Jesus' death. He shows how Jesus' death came to be seen as sacrificial and how the evolving understandings of Jesus' death affected those who suffered most from it - the Jews. He then traces the emergence and development - in theology, liturgy, literature, art - of the conviction that Jesus' death was redemptive, as seen both in soteriological theory from Tertullian to Anselm, in the Reformation and modern eras, and in more popular religious responses to the crucifixion. Especially fascinating is the story of the emergence of a distinct "Passion piety" that still characterizes the West. In all this Sloyan detects the separation of the cross from Jesus' life and resurrection, allowing the mythicizing of an event too large for mere words to handle: the mystery of the cross.

About the Author
Gerard S. Sloyan, STD, PhD, is professor emeritus of religion at Temple University and currently visiting professor at Georgetown University, Washington, DC. He has written extensively on Jesus, including The Crucifixion of Jesus (Fortress Press, 1995) and Why Jesus Died (Fortress Press, 2004).

Jesus's death in historical context
By Patrick C. Mowery
Fr. Sloyan has done a credible job of placing the story and meanings of Jesus's death and resurrection within the historical context of Church development. Thus, he helps us to better understand their meaning as learned in the canonical writings, and as the religion evolved from Judaism to Christianity and then towards contemporary understanding. The breadth of the historical developments are extremely welcomed. The conciseness of the book is very welcomed, but the writing style could be smoother.

Social Science Commentary on the Synoptic Gospels, by Bruce Malina, Richard L. Rohrbaugh

When readers are separated from the social world of the author, miscommunication occurs. Historical methods of Biblical interpretation have been helpful in narrowing the gap between the modern reader and ancient authors but have concentrated only on distinctive events and ideas. The social-scientific approach employed in this commentary focuses on social phenomena that have persisted for centuries.

Indespensible tool for reading the synoptic gospels
By Loren Rosson III
Bruce Malina and Richard Rohrbaugh are members of The Context Group: Project on the Bible in its Cultural Environment, and this commentary is one of the finest fruits of their labor. The authors shed light on subtle aspects of ancient Middle East culture which go completely over our heads when we read the bible.

For instance, in ancient Palestine compliments were enviously aggressive. They implicitly accused a person of rising above others at their expense. Thus, when a man challenges Jesus by calling him a "good teacher", Jesus must fend off the accusation with a counterquestion: "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone?" (Mk. 10:17-18/Mt. 19:16-17/Lk. 18:18-19). In Jesus' world, honorable men didn't defend themselves when challenged -- for that would only concede ground to their opponents -- instead, they counterattacked. In the gospels Jesus proves himself an honorable man time and time again. He never answers accusatory questions directly; he is always able to change the terms of a debate and shift its ground. In Mk. 11:27-33/Mt. 21:23-27/Lk. 20:1-8 a group of temple authorities confront Jesus and demand to know by what authority he made his prophetic demonstration in the temple. Jesus responds with a counterquestion and then ends up insulting them by refusing to reveal anything at all. Then, in Mk. 12:13-17/Mt. 22:15-22/Lk. 20:20-26, a group of Herodians and Pharisees try snaring Jesus by getting him to admit having revolutionary sentiments about paying taxes. Jesus deflects their question by having them produce a coin for him, and then, holding it up for all to see, he shames them with a nasty counterquestion and tricks them into identifying themselves as idolaters before concluding with his well-known cryptic saying, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's". All of these examples show how honorable first-century Jews debated in public.

The authors illumine the values of Galilean peasants as distinct from Judean Pharisees and other temple authorities. Consider the conflict related in Mk. 7:1-25, where a group of Pharisees demand that Jesus explain why his disciples eat with unwashed hands. Jesus, naturally, doesn't deign to explain this. Instead, he counterattacks with insults -- calling the Pharisees hypocrites -- and then escalates the conflict by showing them up with scripture citations, setting his own interpretation of the Torah against theirs. But the authors do provide an explanation: "Keeping purity laws was a near impossibility for peasant farmers, who did not have the required water for ritual baths, as well as for fishermen, who came in constant contact with dead fish, dead animals, and the like. It was also very difficult for people who traveled about, such as Jesus and his disciples. The religious tradition of the Galileans had adapted itself in significant measure to the realities of peasant life."

The commentary brings to life ancient Mediterranean values as contrasted with ours in the modern West. For instance, discovering identity was not a process of self-discovery like it is with us. Identity was provided by one's peers, not by oneself. When Jesus asks Peter, "Who do you say I am?", and Peter replies, "You are the messiah" (Mk. 8:29), most of us today think that Jesus knows who he is and is simply testing his disciples to see if they know. But the authors correctly refute this: "Since Jesus rejected his own honor by leaving his family and village and living as an itinerant exorcist-healer, he needs to find out what his status is both among the public and his followers." They provide him with his messianic identity. Only when public support has grown substantially will he finally be comfortable identifying himself as the messiah (as in Mk. 14:61-62). For now, he is terrified of the title, and he "sternly orders Peter not to tell anyone about it" (Mk. 8:30).

Malina and Rohrbaugh have described just about every behavioral cue and cultural script we could think of -- how ancient gossip networks functioned, why all rich people were considered thieves, the nature of patron-client relationships, etc. This book is a priceless tool, and it has already been used as a foundation for more comprehensive treatments of the historical Jesus. Be sure to buy it and the sequel, "Social Science Commentary on the Gospel of John".

This is an updated and improved version of the earlier '92 publication, with material re-arranged for easier reading, and new commentary as well.

A very useful book.
By Stanislao Esposito
I enjoyed the book that, with its companion "on the gospel of John", form a source of "inside" information that otherwise I woudln't have access to. The book is structure according to a regular commentary with additional "notes" or "reading scenarious." Unfortunately, there are no footnotes; therefore, when they tell you abuot a particular custom of that time, there is no direct reference to a primary source. Therefore, you have to take their words for it. There is a bibliography, which can help a bit, but still you're left with no way to further a specific point.

Lots of Great Information; Not Well Organized
By Scooter
I found this book to be very helpful in providing a frame of reference for understanding the Synoptic Gospels. The authors correctly point out that viewing the actions, teachings and events of an agrarian society from 2,000 years ago with our modern, industrial, individualistic point of view leaves a great deal of room for misunderstanding. However, I rate this book as 3 stars because of the structure. It is not really designed to be read cover to cover, because material is repeated over and over again, as similar events occur in Matthew, Mark & Luke. I think this work could be improved considerably if the authors made more liberal use of the academic convention of "c.f." I feel that it is serious reader abuse to ask one to read through a two-page exposition toward the end of the book that is a 90% literal repeat of an earlier section, in hopes of finding the one sentence that is new.

Limitations of Survey History: Little depth or breadth, no comparison of past to present
By M. Frost
Keep in mind that this is a very short book, only 158 pages. The primary text is about 145 pages, that loses a lot of space to about 50 illustrations and pictures. There is also a good 12-page "A Guide to Further Reading". The author tries to cover a lot of material, but trying to cover nearly 500 years of detailed theology and history in such a short amount of space means much is left out and there is very little depth to any issue. Often things come across as just saying that someone lived in such a time and place and had a thought about something Lutheran.

As an ecumenically-minded Eastern Orthodox Christian I enjoy learning about other Christian faith groups, esp. those that have an extensive history, world presence, comprehensive theology, and are liturgical. This means getting an understanding of some of the core Protestant groups, primarily Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, and Reformed. So when I saw this book on a discount table priced very inexpensively, I bought it.

I'm not exactly sure at what grade level this work is intended, but it feels like it could be useful for high school juniors/seniors or for an introductory class to Protestant denominations for college freshmen. But this is really just a very general introduction.

This is a 2-part book. The first is a general history of Lutheranism, with sections on the Old World, New World, Missionary activity, and worldwide Lutheranism ecumenical activities. The second is a rather general discussion about Lutheran theology in areas like justification, law vs. gospel, the two kingdoms, etc.

From an Orthodox perspective, a big shortcoming is a complete lack of a overview of the current theology and practice of the 3 major historical strains of Lutheranism: Germany, Scandanavia (esp. Sweden), and the USA. The USA alone has a least 2 major differing parties: the liberal ELCA vs the conservative Missouri Synod, who seem to me to be almost 2 entirely different faith groups. Which group is more faithful to historical, confessional Lutheranism? This is ignored. Is there something similar in Germany or Sweden? Overall, I wish the author would've spent time discussing what traditional confessional Lutheranism and its proponents held versus what modern Lutherans hold today. This is needed in areas like the nature and meaning of the Eucharist, in particular, but also for the 3 Lutheran sacraments (Baptism, Communion, and Confession), in general, the role of Episcopacy (Scandanavia), the rise of female clergy, and ongoing moral issues (abortion, contraception, divorce/remarriage, non-marital co-habitation, sexual ethics, homosexual marriage, and openly accepting homosexual clergy).

A key failing of this book is the lack of an index. So when you want to refer back to anything in it, you have to search the broad table of contents. Sadly, because this was published in 1994 there is no mention of the Roman Catholic-Lutheran agreement on justification that happened later that decade.

Overall, this book attempts to do too much with too little. It doesn't appear to do justice to the complexities of the initial Lutheran theological positions nor the diversity in theology in today's various Lutheran bodies within a nation and between nations. But it does get one interested in learning more, so I guess from that perspective it is a success. It just means you've eaten a happy meal and now want a real dinner!

A brief and highly readable history of Lutheranism
By Charles S. Houser
Although this introduction to Lutheranism is getting close to twenty years old, it remains current and very informative (its focus being primarily historical). At half the price of Gritsch's more recent work on the subject, A History of Lutheranism "Second Edition", it covers all the important bases. The first half of the book deals with the history of Lutheranism, beginning with the Reformation and follows its various strands in Europe and America. I found the discussions of the roots of pietism especially helpful. Sketches of key figures (Luther himself, Zinzendorf, and Muhlenberg to name a few) keep the discussion lively. The second half of the book concisely summarizes Lutheran thinking on various matters and helps illuminate the things that make Lutheranism distinct from other Christian bodies that likewise have their origins in the Reformation. Appendix A, An Introduction to the Lutheran Confessions, is worth the price of the book. The book has many pictures and a bibliography, but lacks an index.

One of the seminal works on this Gospel.
By A Customer
There is no question that any scholar who wishes to understand the Gospel of John will have read this book. Dr. Culpepper provides a scaffolding whereby the reader can approach the literary context of the Gospel on any of its many levels. If I had to reccomend the essential Gospel of John library, and could only include four books, it would include this one (as well as C.H. Dodd's two books and R.E. Brown's commentary). Admittedly, I am biased. Dr. Culpepper is a friend. However, you can verify my words by checking the index of any commentary on John which was written after the publication of this book. Count how many time Dr. Culpepper is mentioned

The rich storytelling in John
By RevRev
I was introduced to this book soon after it was published. I return to it first whenever I find myself in a study of John. Culpepper brings a new depth to understanding John as literature. It was this book that helped me appreciate the literary depth of this gospel. Your appreciation of the details will be wonderfully expanded. Highly recommended.
(I came to this site in Amazon hoping to find the book to give to a pastor preaching through John. I was delighted to find it still in print.)

Anatomy of the Fourth Gospel
By Ryan Clark
There cannot be a more forensic study of the book of John than Culpepper's Anatomy of the Fourth Gospel. This scholarly book opens up the world of the Gospel of John like no other in the protestant world. This book should be mandatory reading for every Doctoral student in Biblical Studies (and probably master's as well).

Healing in the New Testament, by John J. Pilch

How are we to read and understand stories of Jesus healing the lame, deaf, blind, and those with a variety of other maladies? Pilch takes us beyond the historical and literary questions to examine the social questions of how the earliest followers of Jesus and ancient Judeans understood healing, what roles healers played, and the different emphases on healing among the gospels. In his comparative analysis, the author draws on the anthropology of the Mediterranean as well as the models employed by medical anthropologists to understand peasant societies and their health-care systems. Utilizes social-science models Features a complementary web- site with additional resources

Painfully mechanical application of a smattering of 20th century anthropology to 1st century Palestine and Jesus
By Cato Sapiens
To Pilch and other who march with him in the little known but highly influential "Context Group", anthropology provides a set of incredibly powerful (and almost infallible) tools for simply and easily "unlocking" the mysteries of the New Testament world. The result is an overly confident series of textbook like simplifications and rules: "all illnesses are always and infallibly healed, since all human beings ultimately find some meaning in a life-situation, including disvalued states," Pilch proclaims (p. 93)

If that kind of argument impresses you, then you've found your book. But actual anthropology is an empirical, not a deductive science, and Pilch seems to have missed that point altogether. Most of the theory here derives from the ground-breaking work of Arthur Kleinman (who is both an M.D. and a trained anthropologist) who began studying how different kinds of healers in Taiwan went about their crafts, how they interacted with patients, and what the results were. Kleinman's work (Patients and Healers in the Contexts of Culture) is enormously insightful, and is worth reading in its original form.

But Pilch seems fails to understand that Dr. Kleinman actually went into the field to study these healers first hand, and to attempt to measure the efficacy of a variety of non-western healing techniques. In describing his own work, Kleinman at one point (unfortunately) says, that there is a "dichotomy" between medical curing (according to Western standards--measurable change in structure/function) and the more holistic intent of non-Western "healing." (This is an oversimplification). But Pilch has taken this empirical observation made 30 years ago and built an astonishing edifice upon it, emptying Kleinman's work of its empirical intent and disregarding the very limited scope of Kleinman's one-culture, one-time period study. Whew!

The result is a series of grand, globalized statements and "laws" that appeal strongly to people who believe that uncovering "laws" in the social sciences makes intellectual life much simpler (which, I'm sure, it does.) But this all goes against the spirit of anthropological exploration. There are scores of medical anthropologists who do not treat their field data by imposing Dr. Kleinman's conceptual framework upon it...but you'll never know that by reading Pilch. Medical efficacy--which is exactly what Dr. Kleinman and his associates went to Taiwan to study--is merely a "cultural construct" Pilch proclaims.

But this puts Pilch in the position of having to imply that the lepers, the blind, and the lame of Jesus' time either couldn't tell the difference (or didn't care) whether they could see, walk, have physical relief from their very visible and frightening skin disorders. Pilch argues that since Jesus' real work involved integrating these outcasts into his new social network, they were (by definition, again) HEALED even if they still limped blindly with disfiguring skin conditions.

Hard to understand how this would cause Jesus' reputation as a great healer (which even his enemies acknowledged in their attacks on him) to spread like wildfire. As a historical explanation, it simply lacks credibility.

What Pilch has missed is that "western" medicine itself has changed enormously in its theoretical orientation since the mid-1970's when Kleinman's fateful "dichotomy" was "discovered." The emergence and growing robustness of the biopsychosocial models in medicine undermine the entire conceptual groundwork of Pilch's book because doctors know understand that there is an enormously dense two-way web between body and mind, and mind and community.

Unfortunately, New Testament scholars here, as elsewhere, have been far to eager to latch upon a handful of models in sociology and anthropology without ever interacting with (or acknowledging) the complexity and tenuousness of most models.

Last example: Pilch constantly referes to "Mediterranean anthropology" as though it were some unified, simplistic set of dictums rather than a mere hypothesis which has been challenged with increasing vigor for over twenty years.

Just because I know that a person is "Mediterranean", I do not necessarily know more about them than I did prior to applying the label. For the must erudite and amusing refutation of this kind of thinking, anthropologist Michael Herzfeld wrote a funny but serious article called "The Horns of the Medierraneanist Dilemma" in American Ethnologist back in the mid-1980's. (Lots of "horn/cornuto" in jokes for anthropologists.)

Bottom line: Those who really want the world to follow Aristotelian or Thomistic logic complete with syllogisms shouldn't be allowed to run with anthropological scissors in their hands. That's how people get hurt. (Fortunately, any such hurt can/is/always be ipso facto, q.e.d. healed...even if the patient bleeds to death.)

Ouch!

Could have been better.
By A Customer
Pilch's book uses medical/anthropological models to explore healing in the NT. Chapter three, which contrasts modern medicine with that of the first century, is excellent. However, the book is poorly edited and includes a great deal of redundancy (could have been 50 pages shorter). Pilch's dim view of Jesus as healer is unimaginative and uninspiring.

Must have
By sylantroadie
John Pilch does an extrodinary job of applying medical anthropology to healing in the New Testament world. Because a majority of the world experiences ecstatic phenomenon, Dr. Pilch has brought to light culturally sensitive descriptions otherwise overlooked by Western exegetes and lay people alike. It is an important book, leading one into the world of the 1st century.

From the Back Cover
Preeminent black social ethicist Peter Paris sharpens the Afrocentric quest. He focuses on African "spirituality" - the religious and moral values embodied in African experience and pervading traditional African religious worldviews. From extensive comparative research and personal travel, Paris shows how such values were retained and modified in the diaspora, most notably in African American religious and moral thought and practice. Traditional understandings of God, ancestral spirits, tribal community, family belonging, reciprocity, personal destiny and agency, he shows, have not only survived great cultural upheavals but remarkably even been enriched and enlivened. Paris's Pan-African focus, careful scholarship, and eye for ultimate values in varying cultural milieus combine here to model comparative cultural analysis and to clarify the cultural foundations of black ethical life.

African American Spirituality
By Robert W. Kellemen
Peter Paris has written a well-reasoned treatise exploring the relationship between African spirituality and African American spirituality. Whereas other writers see more discontinuity between the two, Paris perceives continuity of beliefs and practices between African religiosity and African American religiosity.

Reviewer: Robert W. Kellemen, Ph.D. is the author of "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction." He has also authored "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," "Martin Luther's Counseling," and "Biblical Psychology."
