"An excellent introduction to the prophets and the prophetic literature . . . The goal of the book is to understand the thought of the prophets in their historical contexts, and to communicate that understanding for our time. Its approach, while innovative, builds upon he best of contemporary analysis of the prophetic literature." --Gene M. Tucker Candler School of Theology Emory University "Koch's first volume on the prophets of ancient Israel displays his sound and creative scholarship and will fill a bibliographical gap.He displays the individuality of each prophet with perceptive insight, but he also compares and interrelates them in his various summaries. Furthermore, Koch relates his study of individual prophets to theological currents that have been flowing through the scholarly world in recent decades." --Bernhard W. Anderson Princeton Theological Seminary

Suffering in a Trinitarian context
By Graham Budd
The doctrine of the Trinity is the most problematic aspect to Christian theology, and the one that causes the most division between Christianity and other world religions. These difficulties have inevitably led to a downplaying of its significance, especially in the West. Jürgen Moltmann, on the other hand, sees it as the central feature of Christianity, without which the rest falls. The casual reader may indeed find some parts of the resulting effort obtuse to the point of the bizarre, for example the subtle discussion of terms such as the 'procession' of the Spirit. And indeed, some may not find his resulting 'Social' model of the Trinity to their taste - 'government by committee' as it was described somewhere.
Nevertheless, this is a richly rewarding work, if only because it offers a generous vision of God far removed from the sterile view that so often passes off as the Christian divinity in everyday discourse. As Keith Ward in Turn of the Tide, remarked, what the actual Christian doctrine of God is must be one of the best-kept secrets of the modern world. The view Moltmann shows us of God is not of a distant and unmoved alien being watching impassively or imperiously from afar (like, say, the gods in the Illiad) but , drawing especially on the liberal early Greek tradition, is above all of a God of love. What this must mean forms what seemed to me the most impressive part of the book - the discussion of theodicy, the problem of evil and suffering.
Moltmann does not avoid the problem but confronts the all-pervasiveness of metaphysical evil head-on: without even in principle being able to 'solve' the problem (and who could 'solve' the problem of a dying child?), he points to a Trinitarian aspect: the Christian view of God is of one who suffers before and with the world. Quoting the Spanish poet and mystic Miguel de Unamuno, he declares that 'God envelops our anguish with His immeasurable anguish'. Through our own suffering, he argues, we can paradoxically come to pity the suffering of God, exemplified by the cross, where the true nature of God is revealed. And thus through suffering, humans come to a true appreciation of and participation in the inner life of the Trinity. Of course, Moltmann points out that this view would verge on the masochistic, if it were not for an eschatological dimension to this: the joyful transcendence over suffering exemplified by the risen Christ.
Whilst at times Moltmann seems simply to present than argue for doctrine here, the impact overall is profound and startling. Far from being a sterile and academic abstraction, the Trinity is convincingly displayed as a living vital part , not just of Christian doctrine, but of a system for reconciling the tragic and doomed aspirations of humans with their dignity in asserting their continuing self-worth. Anyone who thinks that the complexities of the modern world have outgrown the simplistic answers traditionally by religion should read this book for a forcefully different view.

Conquering Through Suffering
By Rich Wall
In Trinity and the Kingdom, Moltmann develops the ideas of his earlier works, Theology of Hope (1965) and The Crucified God (1971), in a more systematic and theological manner (what Moltmann himself describes as "contributions" to a systematic theology). In the present work, Moltmann is chiefly concerned with the notion of power -- specifically, as this has been represented in the Judeo-Christian doctrine of the "kingdom of God." He criticizes the way Western cultures have normally used the term "kingdom of God" to butcher, enslave, or otherwise compel other peoples of the world to its own ends, and notes that this misuse of the kingdom has often been tied to a certain misunderstanding of God as single, solitary subject (absolute potentate) ruling over others as objects of his will. However, if one begins with the cross of Christ and defines God's power there -- that is, as the power of love, the power to change an enemy into a friend by "suffering with" the victim -- then we have not only a completely different image of power but of God as well. God at the foot of the cross is not a removed dictator (right-wing or left-wing), but a com-passionate being of love, who is not a single, solitary figure removed from the world, but exists IN relationship AS relationship (Father, Son, Spirit). Here we have a "relational being," who is open to the world and its suffering, and who invites the world into the divine circle of fellowship. God as "Social Trinity," therefore, forms the basis for a fundamentally new order (kingdom) on earth that is ruled by love and com-passion -- an egalitarian society of "brothers and sisters" that may be termed "assembly" or "church." This "society of equals" may or may not bear any resemblance to the ecclesiastical institution that normally goes by the name "church," but which oftentimes acts dictatorially (whether Roman Catholic, Protestant, or Southern Baptist!).
Whatever one's personal assessment might be of Moltmann's formulation of the Social Trinity, perichoretic unity, divine openness, etc., one must remember that at the heart of this sometimes dry, academic discussion there is always a political critique of monarchism (whether ecclesiastical or secular), which often masquerades under the banner of the "kingdom of God" and certain unchallenged assumptions regarding divine power and divine being. This is not merely an academic debate; correct doctrine in this case is literally a matter of life and death for those who suffer from all forms of monarchical "kingdom" theology today. If we still want to use the traditional terms, such as "kingdom," "power," or "conquest," then the theological baggage with which they have so long been encumbered must be stripped away, for God's sake and for the kingdom's sake.

God the Spirit, by Michael Welker

Welker sees Spirit as conflicted territory in a world alive with experiences of the Spirit, searchings for Spirit, and skepticism about the Spirit. In a work that fuses the best of Continental theology with American process thought, he looks first to the problem of religious experience in today's world and inchoate experiences of the power of the Spirit.

From Booklist
Welker's theology of the Holy Spirit may prove intimidating to some general readers, but--given a widespread interest in spirituality that cuts across ideological, political, and theological lines--it should be made available to readers willing to take it on. Welker justifies the book theologically and practically as giving the Holy Spirit precedence over law and gospel. That will please the charismatic communities of which he is constantly aware, and it may hold their interest through his detailed depiction of the Holy Spirit as "public person." That depiction seems intended to bridge a gap between mainline, academic theologies of the Spirit and popular movements that have most often erupted on the edges of theology and the academy. To the extent that it provides a common language and begins to focus both participants and observers of the various charismatic movements on the kinds of "publics" they are constructing, it will provide an invaluable service. Its largest audience will be among mainline and theologically inclined Protestant observers of charismatic movements, but its thorough exploration of biblical material will prove illuminating to academically inclined participants as well. The Best in a Generation
By Gordon J. Straw
I have found this book to be one of the most significant works on the Holy Spirit in a generation. Although it doesn't answer all questions, it shouldn't have to. His position on Pentecostalism and the Charismatic movement is as an outsider looking in, but seems to look upon their concerns quite favorably. His biblical and historical surveys are good. His section on the 'outpouring of the Holy Spirit' is worth the five stars alone. He presents a credible argument against the traditional modern understanding of the Holy Spirit and for an understanding that places the Holy Spirit directly into the lives of believers and into the heart of Christian theology. The Holy Spirit does not take a back seat here as in most Christian theology.

The Bible Shows a Spirit of Love for All
By Jeremy Garber
Michael Welker provides an excellent, systematic look at the mentions of the Spirit in the Hebrew and Christian Bible and their implications for communities today. Welker rejects abstract and mystical "inexplicable" understandings of the Holy Spirit and provides an overview of the varied, complicated, and yet detailed and real pictures of the Spirit working both in the world of Scripture and in our world today. Welker works within what he describes as "realistic theology," "a theology that is related to various structural patterns of experience and that cultivates a sensitivity to the differences of those various patterns." Welker's realistic theology displays intriguing similarities to the philosophical work of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, insisting on a complex and ever-changing understanding of the Spirit - and that complexity and change are characteristics of the Spirit itself. Nonetheless, Welker insists, not any old change will do. Spirit-led change is characterized by the intersection of the knowledge of God, justice and mercy - and you can't have any one of the three without the other two. A community infused by the Spirit of God will display love, a "free self-withdrawal and self-giving for the benefit of other creatures." Welker backs up his theological assertions with the full range of Scriptural investigations from Samson up to the Pauline church. A dense read, well-written but definitely technical; excellent for professional theologians and possibility upper-level graduate seminars. At the bottom, if the church would take seriously Welker's (biblical) notion of the Spirit that infuses a community with love to make a difference in the here in now, a lot more people would be both spiritual and religious.

Not convincing. . .
By David Zampino
As a clergyman involved in the Charismatic movement, but also grounded in traditional theological methods, I did not find this book convincing. In my opinion, (and personal experience) Welker's emphasis on freedom in the Spirit can and has led to abuses in the name of that freedom. In the last 50 years, many things in the Church have been justified in the name of "freedom in the Spirit" -- a number of which have been nothing more than exercises in self-justification.
I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this book.

This book is a MUST HAVE!!!
By Amazon Customer
This book is a must have, especially for believers in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus). Moshe Weinfeld has really uncovered the entire basis for God's eternal laws of the Torah as well as given me a much deeper understanding of Yeshua's words as well as the words of Paul, Peter, James, and the other writers of the New Testament. The concept that is explained in this book is EXACTLY what Yeshua was referring to in Matthew 23:23 when he declared that the religious leaders of the day had focused on the mint, anise, and cumin and neglected the weightier matters of the Torah - Justice, Mercy, and Faith (which are all related to Social Justice).

It is unfortunate that Amazon is not carrying this book and I hope that the situation is rectified in the future. I purchased my book through Logos and read the book on my computer.

social justice book review
By Amanda L. Luke
this was not the book I was looking for, but it is so good. Especially with so much focus on the lack of social justice in our world, today we can better understand what social justice is according to God's Word and how it is different or similar to what the world's definition of social justice.

A Satisfying Read - a good introduction
By Will Jerom
This is a good book - not flawless - but it does the job well as an introductory text to World Religions. I have used the Mary Pat Fisher "Living Religions" text - and I would say this book compares favorably. There are things Partridge omits, there are things it includes when matched up with the Fisher text. Students will find it mostly accessible, and fairly concise (there are some "jargony" sections, but they do not dominate the book), and teachers will feel that their students are getting a fair overview of religion. Partridge's book is well-illustrated and organized. I would recommend this for use as a World Religions textbook, or perhaps also for the independent reader who is curious about religion. There were a few problems - the chapter on Hinduism erred in having an insignificant discussion of Mohandas Gandhi and omitting the significance of the Congress Party in India. The chapter on Judaism eventually got around to brief descriptions of Abraham and Moses, and on Buddhism the 4 Noble Truths were delayed in their introduction - but all this material appeared in due time. I thought the last few pages on Religion and Politics by Robert Pope were very good.
So yes - I would say Partridge has contributed a scholarly and worthy textbook in a field that is very competitive.

Barely Adequate for Middle School
By Jem H.
I do not recommend this textbook for use in college level religions courses. The text is poorly written and organized, with different sections of each chapter written by different scholars with varying levels of intellectual depth. Often, the sub-articles do not flow together with any sort of consistency or logic. The text appears to have been written for competent 8th graders and never approaches any level of conceptual analysis of the terms introduced. For example, in the Hinduism chapter 'Atman' and 'Brahman' are merely briefly mentioned or defined over a few sentences and then barely discussed again in any broader context. Broad swaths of terms are arranged in almost list-like fashion and given (on average) about two sentences of definition, but these terms are never synthesized into a greater narrative structure, nor are they brought into dialogue with other religious traditions. Again, for example, Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism are treated as three entirely separate traditions with little to no discussion about their shared cultural and historical origins, no conceptual discussions about their shared use of terms like 'karma', 'dharma', and 'samsara' and their philosophical differences concerning these terms, and little recognition that these religious traditions were often engaged in explicitly philosophical investigations into the nature of the self and of reality.

The book does try to be comprehensive, which may contribute to its lack of depth and utter lack of coherent organization, but it especially lacks any sort of comparative component that, in my opinion, is essential to any real introduction to religious studies. Ultimately, I find any course that attempts to cover ALL of the main "facts" of the major religions in the world in one semester to be a waste of time for students, and one not conducive to any real understanding. Stick with Huston Smith or John Koller for your religion texts, and break your religion surveys into two separate classes, at the very least.

Begrimed and Black, by Robert Hood

Robert E Hood's unique and fascinating work probes the mythic roots of racial prejudice in Western attitudes toward color. With special attention to the history of ideas, but also to pictorial images and popular movements, Hood documents the inception and growth of the myth of black carnality, with its commingling of disdain and desire, fear and fascination. In tracing that vein from Graeco-Roman and biblical sources through signal moments in subsequent history, Hood shoes how Christianity forged the key links between blackness, evil, sexuality, and magic. He also tracks how Christendom has been a crucial bearer of ideas that sealed the fate of millions of Africans in the colonial era and that still figure prominently in subordination of blacks and in the disfiguring of American society.

Black versus White --- the history of those with black skin
By Richard Young
I was very impressed with the author's detailed handling of the long history of the attitudes toward those with black skin. I always thought they started during the pre-Civil War days, but see that there has been perceptions of blacks for thousands of years.

Bob Hood was my roommate at Ohio Wesleyan University in 1953 which started our life long friendship. At the time we were in college, I was completely ignorant of what my "white people" were doing to the blacks in this country. He would have loved seeing the election of a black President.

From Library Journal
The "Guides to Biblical Scholarship" series aims to provide a popular presentation of major issues and developments in recent biblical scholarship. Here, Via (emeritus, Duke Divinity Sch.; The Ethics of Mark's Gospel) has written an updated version of a book of the same name by Hendrickus Boers that appeared in the series in 1979. Via examines major advances since then in the debate concerning the nature and structure of New Testament theology, especially regarding historical criticism, literary criticism, and existential interpretation. An introductory chapter discusses the contribution made by Boers's book, and Chapters 2 through 7 follow the same basic structure: Via presents a succinct overview of a significant issue (e.g., the objectivity of historical criticism, historical vs. hermeneutical structure, postmodernist interpretations) followed by a usually very brief but thorough overview of a dizzying array of contemporary scholars' contributions. At the end of each chapter, he summarizes the main issues and offers his evaluation. While constituting impressive scholarship, this book assumes too much of a general reader. It is geared to clergy or college students and is not recommended for public library purchase. Charlie Murray, C.S.S., Fordham Univ., NY

Not happy
By luke
The book was large print - it was not a standard copy of the book. It looked much more like a work book. I'd prefer to just get what was actually advertised than a book my grandma could read haha

Over-Reaching and Under-Delivering
By Ryan Donell
Via seeks to summarize and critique all the major contributors of New Testament Theology. I appreciate his conciseness, but I almost would have just desire the summaries. Instead, he also attempts critiques, which I find many times biased, narrow, convoluted, and reductionistic while at the same time seeking to leave every possibility for interpretation "open". He's a brilliant man, but I just disagreed with him a lot. However, he did help me understand Bultmann much better. Kudos

Do No Harm, by Stephen G. Ray Jr.

Among the evils addressed by Christian theology, says Stephen Ray, must be the evil perpetuated by its own well-meant theologies. His important project examines the downside of the category of social sin, especially in theologians' use of destructive stereotypes that have kept Christians from realizing and engaging the most pervasive social evils of our time—racism and anti-Semitism. To make his case, Ray examines problematic ways in which several theologians describe the reality of social evil. "Theologians," he contends, "often unwittingly describe [social] sin in terms that may themselves be profoundly racist, sexist, heterosexist, anti-Semitic, and classist." He contends that they must attend more carefully to the social evils deeply embedded in their own patterns of language and thought. Ray looks specifically to the work of Reinhold Neibuhr and Dietrich Bonhoeffer to document unintended consequences of theology's oversights and then to Augustine, Luther, and Calvin to analyze the strains and strengths of traditional notions. Not only theologians and ethicists but also ministers and laity will benefit from Ray's thoughtful reconsideration of the social stance of Christian theology.
