Jesus and the Reign of God, by C.S. Song

Song's theology is a startling rebuke to Christologies centered either in historical-critical searches or church doctrines. For Song, theology is the biography of God, and God's reign is evident in stories of God's saving presence in Jesus. The reign of God in Jesus "becomes manifest through movements of people to be free from the shackles of the past, to change the status quo of the present, and to have a role to play in the arrival of the future."

Positive guidelines for thought and for action.
By Roland M. Poirier
More people are familiar with Jesus than with the "Reign of God", maybe because for a long time it has unfortunately been called the "Kingdom of God". So the author starts by giving some insights on what his title refers to.
The Reign of God is presented as not being a territory nor an institution, but the mere fact that God himself, directly or indirectly exercises the rule; the fact that any kind of segregation is abolished because ultimately there is only one God, who cares for the whole of humankind, regardless of faith or religion.
The reign of God is not a matter of devotion but of involvement in the world. What we do for or against others, we do for or against God and his Reign which covers all worlds.
In more practical terms, one of the characteristics of Jesus that are put forward here is that he preached acceptance before unity. Acceptance breeds unity and not the reverse, despite the regrettable fact that many people behave as if it were the opposite and that for instance, two thousand years later Christian churches still require that people be baptized in order to be accepted as children of God. Ironically, acceptance still comes first, but only so long as the burden lies on the other party.
The book provides many references to actual situations and offers solid arguments inviting us to transform this world where all too often one can run into what the author calls "the oppression of the oppressed by the oppressed", one of the most depressing realities to be encountered on earth.
The Reign of God is not a concept nor a matter of words, but a matter of persons struggling against every type of power that tends to dehumanize people.
This book offers multiple opportunities to reappraise some of our assumptions and to transfigure ourselves in order to contribute to the transfiguration of the world. It may take some time to read thoroughly, but it is worth it.

Philosophy and theology
By FrKurt Messick
This volume on the works of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel is part of a series by Fortress Press entitled 'the Making of Modern Theology: Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Texts'. Each of the volumes in the series focuses upon one particular theologian of note. These volumes are of use to students, seminarians, ministers and other readers interested in the development of theological ideas in the modern and postmodern world. Each volume is a reader of key texts from the theologian highlighted - the text entries are annotated a bit by the editors, and the editor of each volume provides an introduction setting the general stage for context and understanding.
Editor Peter Hodgson describes Hegel as being a significant theologian of the spirit for Christianity. Hegel is generally classified under the heading 'philosophy' rather than theology -- he believed the universe to be rational, and this was important in every aspect of his philosophy. Hegel envisioned his word 'Phenomenology of the Spirit' as just an introduction to a larger system he had in mind -- at over 700 pages, this is some introduction! Unfortunately, much of Hegel's hoped-for publication and writing was never completed.
Many of the texts used here in Hodgson's compilation are newly translated; explorations of Hegel's explicitly theological thought are rare. Much of Hegel's work was not published during his lifetime; much remains collected along lines of interest to philosophers looking at metaphysics and politics (Hegelian principles are very strong in later Marxist frameworks). The difference between the philosophy of religion and theology is always a tricky one to navigate; with Hegel, this can be even more confusing, given that his immediate successors rarely agreed amongst themselves about Hegel's original intentions and meanings.
Hodgson's description of Hegel as a theologian of the spirit has much to do with the ontological view of God -- both philosophy and theology get at the truth; God as spirit is a self-revealing and relational being knowable to the world in different ways. He goes beyond subjective spirit and objective spirit towards an absolute, an infinity that contains within itself the finite.
Hodgson draws on the large body of Hegel's work in a largely chronological rather than topical arrangement. Early theological writings (pre-1800) are followed by Hegel's writings at Jena; the major work 'Phenomenology of the Spirit' was done in 1807. Tracts from the Encyclopedia of Philosophical Sciences were done from 1817 to 1830; during this period, other writings and lectures are presented.
Each volume in this series also has a selected bibliography section -- this one for Hegel is divided into collected works of Hegel, major single works by Hegel (primary sources in English), and works about Hegel's religious thought. The book well indexed. This is a very good book for scholarship. The translations of the works from the original German is new, preserving some of the language uses (masculine pronouns for God) while modifying others (gender neutral translations for terms such as Mensch, Menschen). With regard to Hegel's philosophical framework, translation can be particularly difficult for the term 'being' -- Sein, Dasein, Seiende, and Wesen are variously translated; notes accompany problematic texts.

when Hegel's name is mentioned in philosophy, usually people listen. Hodgson shows a side of Hegel that i previously had little to no knowledge of--his spiritual ideas. this book provides insight and understanding to the 'absolute of absolutes' that Hegel incorporates into his modern thought. this merger of philosophical ideas from with the gospel message of Christianity allows one to understand that the complexity of philosophy, especially with Hegel, can be articulated to others for their growth as Christians. this is definitely a worthwhile read about an enlightening topic.

Seriously done, but mainly philosophical
By flapping in traumatized laughter puddle
I should refrain from saying anything about who, if anyone might, would be adhering to the wrong religious doctrines in our own times. Though the legacy of Hegel after his death is controversial, this book allows us to consider him "a philosopher of religion" (p. 1), for whom "the proper object of theology is religion itself, the relationship." (p. 32). With his knowledge of philosophy, Hegel was able to break religion down into four stages, in which the Greek religion based on art was considered the second stage. Political superpower ideology seems to follow this as the Roman stage followed the height of Greek civilization.
"The time of grief came when the Romans smashed the living individualities of the peoples, putting their spirits to flight and destroying their ethical life, before extending the universality of their lordship over the dismembered singular parts. At the time of this dismembering for which there was no reconciliation, and of this universality that had no life--in this boredom of the world when peace was lord over all the civilized earth--the original identity had to rise out of its rent condition, it had to lift its eternal force above its grief and come again to its own intuition. Otherwise the human race must have perished inwardly." (p. 88).
I was most impressed by the connection between humor and legal oppression that arises in this situation, as if Hegel was also aware that comedy and law play to the same audience.
"The latter [the Stoic autonomy of thinking, which passes through the movement of the skeptical consciousness to find its truth in that shape which we have called the unhappy self-consciousness] knows what the validity of the abstract person amounts to in actuality and equally in pure thought. It knows that such validity is rather a complete loss; it is itself the conscious loss of itself and the divestment of knowledge from itself. We see that this unhappy consciousness constitutes the counterpart and completion of the comic consciousness that is perfectly happy in itself. Into the latter all divine being returns--the complete divestment of substance. The unhappy consciousness, on the other hand, is conversely the tragic fate of the certainty of self that aims to be in and for itself. It is the consciousness of the loss of all essentiality in this certainty of itself, and of the loss of even this knowledge of itself--the loss of substance as well as of self. It is the anguish that finds expression in the harsh words, God is dead." (p. 117)
"Under the [Roman] legal status, then, the ethical world [of the Greeks] and the religion of that world are submerged in the comic consciousness, and the unhappy consciousness is the knowledge of this total loss. It has lost the worth it attached to its personality both as immediate and as mediated or thought. Trust in the eternal laws of the gods is silenced, just as the oracles, which pronounced on particular questions, are dumb. The statues are now only stones from which the living souls have flown, just as are words from which faith is gone." (pp. 117-118).
A portion of Hegel's famous Preface to his Phenomenology of Spirit is included in this book, in which he treats the word "God" as if being the subject of a sentence is the only proper use of the word:
"The need to represent the absolute as subject has found expression in the propositions: God is the eternal, the moral world-order, love, and so on. In such propositions the true is just baldly posited as subject, but it is not presented as the movement of reflecting itself into itself. In a proposition of this kind one begins with the word God. Of itself, this is a meaningless sound, a mere name; it is only the predicate that says what God is, and gives God content and meaning; only when we get to the end of the proposition does the empty beginning become actual knowledge. This being so, it is not clear why one does not speak solely of the eternal, the moral world-order, and so on, as the ancients did, of pure concepts, of being, the One and so on, of what is the meaning, without adding the meaningless sound as well. But it is just this word that indicates that what is posited is not a being or essence or universal in general, but something reflected into itself, a subject." (pp. 95-96).
This book might be worthwhile for anyone who needs to brush up on how Hegel thinks about reflection. In July 1802, `The Critical Journal of Philosophy' published Hegel's FAITH AND KNOWLEDGE, in which Hegel criticized the philosophies of Kant, Jacobi, and Fichte. The Introduction of that work is called The Culture of Reflection (pp. 73-82) in this book, and reveals Hegel's awareness of the deepest thinkers of his own time:
"Of course, the inner must be externalized; intention must become effective in action; immediate religious sentiment must be expressed in external gestures; and faith, though it flees from the objectivity of cognition, must become objective to itself in thought, concepts, and words." (p. 75).
"If an artist cannot give truth to what actually exists . . ." (p. 81) "then he will take refuge in feeling, in yearning and sentimentality as his remedy against actuality, spreading tears on the cheeks of the vulgar and bringing an `Oh Lord' to their lips. Thus his figures will indeed look away beyond the actual situation toward heaven, but they will do so like bats that are neither bird nor beast, and belong neither to earth nor to sky." (p. 82).
Near the end of the book, Hegel's lectures on religion include the story of Adam, Eve, the tree of knowledge, and "Moreover, the serpent says that by eating the fruit of the tree Adam and Eve will become like God, and this appeals to human pride." (p. 234). Indeed.

I was raised on this LBW
By Dan
Having been raised and grown through the Litergy of the green book I can't imagine using any other. I don't know about the difference in the Hymns & Litergy between the red and green book, but I'm am moved as much by the traditional like "Amazing Grace", as I am by Barbara Streisand's "The Our Father", or Cristie Laine's (sp?)modern Hymns. I don't care for "Folk" version services, but I don't care for Folk music in general. There is only one particular service that I'm most moved by, as I'm sure most have a preference...that's how God made us :-). My suggestion to anyone "on the fence" should attend a service of both and see what touches your heart through the Holy Spirit. I realize we are each individuals with different likes and dislikes. I could not give a Litergical and/or Hymnal anything but five stars, but I do LOVE this book.

From the Publisher
From the Preface (pre-publication version):

Handel’s setting of Malachi 3:2 in his Oratorio, “The Messiah,” has a pedantic, rhythmic pulse for the bass voice. The aria opens with the questions: “Who shall abide in the day when the Lord comes?” and “Who shall stand when the Lord appears?” The Bass answers, in a dynamic, virtuoso aria: “Why do the Nations so furiously rage together?” In response, the tempo and rhythmic scene painting changes to a vigorous pulse with great agitation in the orchestral and vocal parts, for the subject of inquiry is “like a Refiner’s Fire.”

The dynamics of “a Refiner’s Fire” was poignantly, passionately revealed to me during a Wabash Teaching and Learning Workshop in January, 1998. When asked to present a symbol or artifact that best described each of us, my dear friend Dr. Marsha Boyd, now with the American Theological Association, said that her metaphor is a welder. Welders artistically use Fire to refine metals. On our last day of this Workshop, I perused the reference materials on the book shelf in my room, and discovered The Welder’s Bible. I remembered my years of Biblical History and could quickly recall a Geneva Bible, the Bishop’s Bible, the Wycliffe Bible, The Woman’s Bible, et cetera, et cetera, but no Welder’s Bible. My excitement and curiosity got the better of me. I brought the Welder’s Bible to Marsha for her to see and then I began to flip through its pages. This was not a Bible that contained Hebrew and New Testament texts. This was a complete encyclopaedia of everything one needed to know about welding, from terminology and temperatures at which different metals can be refined, to the different types of joints one welds and the various safety precautions one ought to take when welding. Welding is serious, dangerous business.

Using language and exploring religious concepts is also serious, dangerous business, but it is a business which I am called to do: welding and refining a fire, a molding of thoughts across time, emerging out of various temperatures, various contexts to explore the intersection of violence, power, and religion. This volume, itself a process of refining the fire of passion amid theological discourse in exposing violence, viewed through the lens of a Womanist approach that welds and explores the fires created at the juxtaposition of creative theory and praxis.

Throughout literature and history, personal, communal, and institutional violence has existed intimately with religious practice. The creation of the world out of chaos into order was an evolutionary, violent act. The thrust of a child out from the protective birth canal into a hostile, outside world is violent. The mandate of law enforcement to maintain order often requires violent acts by authority. The three strikes law and the death penalty are violent acts allegedly designed to quell violence. Statistics show that neither the three strikes law nor the death penalty has worked as a successful deterrent. Many of those trapped by the three strikes are couriers of dope for dealers and suppliers. Many of those who are employees of the illegal drug industry are there because they are addicts, and some are there because of the equal opportunity employment benefits. The death penalty is a sophisticated, high-priced lynching, given the cost of appeals, housing, and the elaborate system designed to make this state ordered, state administrated act of violence a humane “mercy killing.” Using Refiner’s Fire as a metaphor of social change and abusive control, this book explores the intersection of violence and religion, creative/destructive systemic forces, in biblical and contemporary society. Refiner’s Fire analyzes the effects of religion as catalysts which help humanity to foment and/or transcend violence.

Using historical and contemporary situations and narratives, Refiner’s Fire analyzes religions’ involvement in violence. Building on a Womanist theology and ethic, Refiner’s Fire addresses issues concerning women, religion, and violence in: language, the Bible, slave spirituality, the 1960s Civil Rights movement, the protest ministry of Martin Luther King, Jr., and female social groups—sororities and gangs. After the section which presents a prolegomena for a constructive theology and ethics of violence toward transformation, the book concludes with a liturgical treatment of death which transcends ultimate violence.

Chapter One, Eyes On the Prize: Womanist Theology and Ethics, introduces a hermeneutics, a methodology that involves an experience of implements, processes, and ways of seeing and exorcising that facilitate consciousness raising, analyzes complex realities, and ultimately, that helps transform injustice. Chapter Two, Take No Prisoners: Women who Engage in Violence in the Bible, began as a presentation, “What’s Violence Got to Do With It?: Inflamers, and the Lizzie Bordens of Ancient Israel: Women Who Slay and/or Cause Wrongful Deaths” for the 1996 Colloquium on Violence & Religion [COV&R] Symposium. This chapter analyzes pairs of women who work together for divine or human purposes, and who refine the fires of leadership, seduction, and rage to do violence—they instigate and/or commit murder within a framework of mimetic desire, from ethical, womanist, psycho-social, theological, and legal perspectives—to achieve their goals, a stunning reality, when nowhere in the entire Hebrew Bible or New Testament does a positive story of a mother/daughter relationship exists. Chapter Three, Lay My Burden Down: Spirituality Transcends Antebellum Violence, is a discourse on the inherent spirituality that emerges from those powerful psalms of slaves, selected African American Spirituals, from the African Diaspora in the United States, during the ante-bellum period when the enslavement of African Americans was a legal and accepted practice and during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement to refine the fires of protest, assurance, dignity, justice, and equality. This essay on spirituality signified was prompted by conversations with my friend and associate, Professor Dwight Hopkins, University of Chicago.

From Chapter One (pre-publication version):

Eyes On the Prize: Womanist Reflections She looked in the mirror: No immediate image did she see; The vastness of the horizon; Seemed to mock her: she could not see her reflection. Through the skewed lens of dominant culture: She saw nothing A sister came along, With dignity and joy, And a different way of seeing. She was mesmerized. A thing she could not fathom Was about to cross her path, And that incomprehensible other Opened her mouth; And spoke; And lovingly said: “You are somebody.” She looked in her mirror, again. And this time she saw Gazing back at her With a nobility and a peace. The empty objectiveness that was but a shadow Had been replaced By her mighty image. And she heard God say: “That’s good!”

To know who and what you are and who you belong to, is to embody the Divine good, is being clear about what is at stake, and is the cost and benefit of the prize of total, salvific grace and freedom. From the wounds of oppression sown in slavery, pampered by Jim Crow, and titillated by internalizing the hurt; and venting the injury on others oozes the poisons of pain, self-hatred, self-defeatism, insatiable desire, and rage. The want-a-be like white folks syndrome and the failed project of integration have exacted a tremendous cost. Although the “For Colored Only” and “For White Only” signs have been painted over or dismantled, the poisons and prisons of racism, sexism, classism, ageism, and heterosexism now wear different masks. “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize, Hold On!” affirms and avows the attitude of Womanist scholars as they study, teach, preach, and write about the tri-dimensional race/sex/class oppressive experience of Black women, tempered with the life-giving power that ruminates in the beingness and doingness of women of the African Diaspora. Keep Your Eyes on the Prize is an invitation to confront systemic and personal evil.

This chapter introduces a hermeneutic, a way to see and hear and exorcise the evil and violence that exists in various pockets of society in these United States and the world. This methodology and embodied way of living facilitates consciousness raising, analyzes complex realities, and ultimately, helps transform injustice: Womanist Theory. the language of Womanist thought, is itself the anvil and the kiln for Refining the Fires of analysis towards the reformation and transformation of individual, communal, and systemic violence. After indicating the origins of the term and the theoretical basis of exploration, I express my own rubric of doing Womanist analysis.

What is “Womanist”? Alice Walker coined the term “Womanist” and claims that a Womanist is courageous, in charge, loves, and commits to the wholeness and survival of all people. Many strong Black women have not heard the term “Womanist” and have not identified themselves as such. Womanist is a confessional term, thus some strong Black women do not make this claim nor support all the components of the Womanist definition. Nevertheless, many strong Black women are Womanist by virtue of the experience of oppression and the desire for liberation, which serves as a catalyst for empowerment, exhaling, and excelling. A Womanist, sometimes denigrated as “domineering castrating matriarch,” is a strong Black woman who has developed survival strategies in spite of the oppression of herself in order to save her family and her people. She takes charge; she acts; she is, she Refines the Fire of justice as she keeps her eyes on her prize. “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize” Paul and Silas, bound in jail, Had no money for to go their bail. Keep your eyes on the prize, Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on, Keep your eyes on the prize, Hold on, hold on. Freedom’s name is mighty sweet, One day soon we’re gonna meet. . . . God, my hand, on the gospel plow, I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now. . . . The only chain that a man can stand, Is that chain of hand in hand. . . . The only thing we did wrong, Stayed in the wilderness a day too long. . . . But the one thing we did right, Was the day we started to fight. . . . We’re gonna board that big Greyhound, Carrying’ love from town to town. . . . We’re gonna ride for civil rights, We’re gonna ride both Black and White. . . . We’ve met jail and violence too, But God’s love has seen us through. . . . Haven’t been to heaven but I’ve been told, Streets up there are paved wit gold. . . .

The term Womanist arises from the use of the term “womanish” in African-American communities, and refers to a Black feminist who takes seriously the experience and oppression due to gender, race, and class. Walker’s definition of Womanist is complex and fertile as a foundational rubric for doing critical analysis. In addition to the components of survival, of loving, of taking charge, the term also conveys a vitality of life, a quest for knowledge, and the paradox of being young and living wise or grown. Womanist sensibilities provide of freedom of being able to love all people, sexually and nonsexually, and gives credence to the manifestation of woman’s culture and life. To be Womanist invites holistic health and loving the spectrum of colors of Blackness, like the flora and fauna in beautiful gardens. Womanist theory is aesthetic, physical, spiritual, emotional, and creative. Womanist evokes a palette of kaleidoscopic reality, daily Refining the Fires of passion, love, hope, and change.

A creative meditation on politics, engagement, and spirituality, Welch's latest work connects the personal to the political and the ethical to the historical stream in which we all live. At a time when many progressives feel disoriented and powerless, trapped in a narrative of unbridled assertion of U.S. power, Welch looks into the positive side of the American story, the struggles of peoples to act in concert for inclusive democracy, and hard-earned insights into civic and religious life. She finds the elements of a deep, vital, and hopeful spirituality there. Through chapters on virtuosity, ceremony, audacity, laughter, and risk, she recasts the shape and rationale of personal and political engagement with insights from Native American philosophy, social-contract theory, engaged Buddhism, and the new interreligious commitment to peace. For those who seek a way to affirm and embody a positive ethic in a time of conflict, war, and division, Welch offers this workbook for new human community.

Printing, Propaganda, and Martin Luther, by Mark Edwards

Martin Luther, the first Protestant, was also the central figure in the West's first media campaign. But to what extent was the Reformation a "print event"? And what, finally, was Luther's role in the movement? With Mark Edwards's study of Protestant and Catholic pamphlets published in the early years of the Reformation (1518-1530), these and other questions surrounding Reformation printing are at last given their full due.

Edwards couples his findings with a provocative analysis of the ways in which they challenge the accepted history of the Reformation. His determination of who knew what, and when, as well as how readers interpreted Luther's message makes Edwards's work one that will influence the study of printing and the early Reformation for years to come.

The Christ of faith and the Jesus of history: A critique of Schleiermacher's Life of Jesus (Lives of Jesus series), by David Friedrich Str

Some great books have the capacity to focus on the questions of the day so that everyone must deal with them: others rise to greatness only when they are discovered years later. Strauss's THE CHRIST OF FAITH AND THE JESUS OF HISTORY may belong to both groups. When it was first published, it articulated sharply the crucial issues in the then current theological debate. Theologians today are discovering, not least of all from this century old "book review" here translated for the first time, that they are not yet finished with David Friedrich Strauss. THE CHRIST OF FAITH AND THE JESUS OF HISTORY brings to a head issues which had dominated Strauss's theological work. When read in the light of the author's career, amply surveyed in the Editor's Introduction, it also illumines major issues of modern Christian theology; the character of the Gospels, the historical accuracy of what they report, the possibility of getting at "Jesus as he really was," and the relevance of such a Jesus for modern man. This book is a translation of "Der Christus Des Glaubens und der Jesus der Geschichte: Eine Kritik des Scheier-macherschen Lebens Jesu (Berlin: Franz Duncker: Berlin, 1865)

ONE 19TH CENTURY THEOLOGICAL "GIANT" GRAPPLES WITH ANOTHER
By Steven H Propp
David Friedrich Strauss (1808-1874) was a German theologian and writer, whose Life of Jesus Critically Examined (Lives of Jesus series) was one of the most important theological events of the 19th century. Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) was a German theologian and philosopher who wished to reconcile Christianity with Enlightenment thinking (see his book, On Religion; Speeches to Its Cultured Despisers).

Strauss was inspired by reading the transcripts of Schleiermacher's lectures on the life of Jesus (see The Life of Jesus) to begin his researches. However, he sharply criticizes Schleiermacher: "the really positive element of the work lies only in what it advances about the person of Christ. Schleiermacher's Christology is a last attempt to make the churchly Christ acceptable to the modern world.... Whether this presupposition is tenable must show itself when the Gospel reports about Jesus are systematically subjected to examination.... Schleiermacher's Christ is as little a real man as is the Christ of the church."

He concludes on the note, "Schleiermacher's ear was more sensitive; he let a part of the narrative--to be sure it was the smaller part--keep its miracles, but in turn surrendered it as unhistorical. He sought to support the greater part by extending the concept of nature and of the natural. By subtracting from the narratives what is to be subtracted and by adding to this concept what is to be added, also he believed himself able to answer the question yes. But now we have seen in a host of points that it cannot be done this way either."

"As soon as we no longer expect to treat the Scriptures as other than a human book we will be able to treat them with full respect; as soon as we take courage to really put Jesus in the ranks of humanity, our reverence, or love, cannot fail."

While this volume is not "essential reading" for those interested in the historical Jesus, it will nevertheless be of lasting interest to such students, as well as to those who are interested in either Schleiermacher or Strauss.

David Friedrich Strauss had problems with fame that make him shine less brightly than Hegel and Nietzsche for those who seek to mythologize modern thinking. I was most interested in the section of the book which criticized Schleiermacher's treatment of the life of Christ before His public ministry. The baptism by John and temptation by Satan have certain aspects which make Strauss believe the temptation was a parable (it couldn't really happen, what the Bible says about the temple) Jesus told his disciples so Christians would have a clear understanding of the nature of the Great Satan.
