Review
"Klauck examines major texts in Acts to reveal how its irenic author shows at once what Christianity shared with and in what ways it differed from its cultural environment. Much in its world was humane, rational, and religious in a way that required the Christian message to accommodate itself to its audience's expectations without being drawn into patterns and categories of thought foreign to its own. A stimulating read indeed."

About the Author
Klauck is Professor of New Testament Exegesis, University of Munich, Germany.

Brian McNeil is a native of the United Kingdom who now lives in Germany. He also translated Klauck's The Religious Context of Early Christianity.

An excellent study.
By Wesley L. Janssen
This volume, smallish but rigorous enough, may for some students be an insightful supplement to the study of Luke's Acts. However, it is interesting in its own merits, as history/ scholarship and as exegesis.
From Klauck's introduction: "[W]e now have the possibility of standing afresh in a situation that was a matter of everyday living for the first Christian generations. At the beginning, the Christian faith had to assert itself among the rival religious views which literally competed with one another on the market-place for the favour of the public."

"Like Philo and Josephus, Luke begins by presenting his material in a form which met the expectations of an educated Greek and Roman public." (p4) Luke, we recall, was a gentile and a scientist (a physician) -- the sciences of the Greco-Roman world being astronomy, mathematics and medicine. It is not surprising that Luke's interests engage the 'marketplace of ideas' in which Christianity grew in spite of resistance on all sides. While his approbation of the apostles is evident, his Acts of the Apostles is essentially documentation, it is not polemic. "The primary intention of the Acts of the Apostles as a book is not missionary, but it does portray missionary history, as an inspiration to the reader." (p121)

Klauck's many interesting considerations include Paul's discourse with the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers in Athens, at the Areopagus, and encounters with practitioners of magic. In the author's summary words: "Acts employs dramatic episodes, verbal discourses, summary descriptions of the state of affairs, and narrative commentaries. . . the result is a broad and vivid picture. In the course of the narrative, we gradually encounter a whole series of . . . magicians, astrologers and exorcists . . . a king who does not distance himself sufficiently from the cult of rulers . . . a seer . . . devotees of polytheistic belief . . . philosophers whose curiosity is more noticeable than their academic training . . . kindly barbarians and some genuinely 'noble' pagans.
"Despite all the criticism of some defective forms, we do not find any heavily aggressive polemic. Instead, there is a subtle irony which occasionally takes the form of brilliant parodies." (p119)

The bibliography lists a wealth of resources essentially for the multi-lingual reader (German, English, French).

insightful and well-researched
By Plutarch1
After years of reading about Early Christianity, Hans-Josef Klauck's work Magic and Paganism in Early Christianity has been fascinating and eye-opening into the beliefs and sociocultural attitudes in Ancient times. He has already filled many gaps in my knowledge and perspective with regards to reading Acts, and I am only half-way through it. He brings in contemporary pagan ideas to contrast with the newly born Christianity, which is also trying to separate from Judaism. For example, I just read about Paul's exorcism of the slave girl in Philippi, and his perspective has opened up my eyes to seeing the pagan point of view of Judaism and Christianity.
If you have any interest in this subject, if you are Christian, Jewish, or pagan (or none of the above) yourself, you can get a lot from this book.

"Postmodernism" is not simply one perspective but a basketful of related critical assumptions. A.K. M Adam prepares readers for wrestling with deconstruction, ideological criticism, postmodern feminism, "transgressive" postmodernism, and other postmodern approaches to biblical interpretation. He offers plain-language explanations and illustrative examples and shows how students might undertake their own postmodern biblical interpretation.

plain-English introduction to postmodern religious thought
By Jane Harper
Dr. Adam has done a phenomenal job of making sense of the complexities of postmodernist thought within theology and biblical studies. With his clear definitions, excellent examples and step-by-step reasoning he leads the newcomer through the maze of jargon and confusion that sometimes seems to surround postmodernism.
The one omission I found was that although Dr.Adam defines deconstruction and refers to its sibling, post-structuralism, he never really defines the latter. The references to post-structuralism are few, however, and do not really detract from the discussion.

I especially recommend this volume to those who, like me, have been fascinated by the snippets of postmodernist thought to which we've been exposed, but worried that the theories were too complicated to understand.

Postmodernity arrives...
By FrKurt Messick
The Fortress Press Guides to Biblical Scholarship is a series of short, to-the-point texts dealing with particular questions in the current biblical academic field. There is an Old Testament and New Testament series; the New Testament series largely consists of texts that ask questions about particular types of criticism - narrative criticism, redaction criticism, social-scientific criticism, and so forth. There are many different hermeneutic and exegetical approaches to biblical scholarship, and these guides help to clarify the key points about these methods.
The text under consideration, `What is Postmodern Biblical Criticism?' by AKM Adam (at the time of writing on faculty at Princeton, now on faculty at Seabury-Western) is an important approach, albeit one that is often overlooked in the basic biblical studies courses at some seminaries (there are, after all, more approaches than weeks in a term, in some cases!). Thus, this book served in many ways an introduction to the postmodern biblical critical approach, but in other ways, it covered ideas already known to me.
Adam states in the early portion of the text that whatever definitions he applies to the term `postmodern', there will be some (perhaps many) who disagree. Postmodernity is not just one thing - indeed, it really isn't a `thing' at all. It largely depends upon the definition of modernity, which Adam takes to mean the inheritance of intellectual methods from the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods through nineteenth century scholarship up to the difficult period of the twentieth century. Ideas of progress, greater rationality and understandability of the world, more individualistic modes and a deliberate distancing from `ancients' (some of whom might not be so `ancient').
Adam quotes Cornel West in describing (rather than defining) postmodern as being `antifoundational, antitotalising, and demystifying.' No one paradigm is privileged as a universal or automatically correct one. No one system can explain everything perfectly in every detail - while Adam doesn't reference it directly, the Godel Incompleteness Theorem comes to mind here. Postmodern thought seeks to shake the ideas of absolute and self-evident truths (the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence of the United States could never be formulated in a postmodern framework). Adam takes a brief tour of some of the postmodern literary criticism thinkers (Foucault, Derrida) looking at the critique of foundation and totality, as well as examining Barthes idea of the `death of the author' and Lyotard's concept of `incredulity toward metanarrative'. If this sounds obscure and difficult, you would be right - it is difficult to dispense with the intellectual inheritance of the West without losing even the very language and conceptual framework with which to discuss such a loss.
Adam's chapter on Deconstruction is, as one would expect, essentially Jacques Derrida (with a `practical' application toward the biblical text). Deconstruction is, deconstruction happens - however one phrases it, it is the taking apart and analysing not only the structure (as would a chemist or nuclear physicist) but also the methods both of initial construction and the deconstruction. Deconstruction a la Derrida is a tool that goes beyond simple exegesis (which is often a special case of deconstruction) to look not only at the biblical texts parsed and pieced but also the language underpinning (both original and translation), the societal context, the hidden subtexts, and even the idea of what we are `supposed' to be getting out of the text. One disappointment here is that some of Derrida's other concepts (the gift, the poematic, the monster) which could have yielded benefits for biblical scholarship were not included.
If Derrida was the star of the Deconstruction chapter, Foucault is the star of the Political Criticism chapter. Adam goes further than Foucault to look at New Historicist, non-Foucault Marxist and well as independently developed Feminist critiques of the text. There is a bit of a problem with this chapter in that none of these approaches (perhaps with the exception of the Feminist approach) are fleshed out adequately, and without a firm understanding of the intellectual product of Foucault, Marxist interpretation, etc., the reader might be lost.
Adam's last primary chapter reexamines the idea of the antitotality impulse in postmodernity, looking at different ways of drawing together interpretative methods without regard for the `integrity' of such methods or the `appropriateness' of such integration, always realising that none of these will ever produce a `truth' whole and entire. This is perhaps the piece of postmodernity that makes fundamentalists and liberals uneasy with the postmodern enterprise, and what makes it a risky venture. Adam likens this to `lighting a strange fire' - the risk is in producing something shocking and unacceptable. Adam identifies interestingly (and correctly) that while the Ancients were not postmodern (either chronologically or intellectually), they were not `modern' either, and some of postmodernity strives to recapture elements from the past that are evident in things such as passion plays and mystery plays, midrashic extensions on scripture, etc. Adam might have brought in Heidegger's discussion of the problems of modern art and literature here (although it is little known, it is primary to many postmodern literary critics).
This is not a text for the timid. It is tough reading in many parts, and assumes a familiarity with philosophical, theological, and biblical knowledge, as well as an ability toward subtle critical analysis that is rare today.

The ground of being Tillich...
By FrKurt Messick
This volume on the works of Paul Tillich is part of a series by Fortress Press entitled 'the Making of Modern Theology: Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Texts'. Each of the volumes in the series focuses upon one particular theologian of note. These volumes are of use to students, seminarians, ministers and other readers interested in the development of theological ideas in the modern and postmodern world. Each volume is a reader of key texts from the theologian highlighted - the text entries are annotated a bit by the editors, and the editor of each volume provides an introduction setting the general stage for context and understanding.
Editor Mark Kline Taylor describes Tillich as being a theologian of the boundaries -- particularly the boundaries of modernity, and the boundaries of philosophy and modern intellectual development. Tillich is sometimes mistaken for being an atheist, since he makes the radical claim that God does not exist -- however, this shows the redefinitions and subtle aspects at work in Tillich's writing. Only finite things can be spoken of as 'existing'; God, not being finite, does not 'exist' in the way that any created thing exists. God becomes for Tillich the Ground of Being, that from which all existing things come and in which all in existence have their being.
Tillich is not an easy read. Educated in German schools deeply influenced by liberal theology of the nineteenth century and philosophical schools reacting to the breakdown of Enlightenment thinking, Tillich sought to make theology a relevant subject in the academy. Much of his writing is primarily geared toward other academics, philosophers in particular. As Taylor remarks in his introduction, many seminarians have difficulty with Tillich, both in making real-world connections as well as traversing the language -- Tillich invents his own terminology and develops his own linguistic methods of discussing theological issues.
Tillich was profoundly influenced by his experiences in the first world war, where he served as a chaplain in the trench warfare. Unlike theologians such as Barth, he initially had a young man's bravado and support for the war, until the grim realities set in. This experience would never leave Tillich, and he continued to strive all his life to craft a systematic theology that would on the one hand address the concerns of culture but at the same time resist traditional pitfalls of theology-of-culture that make it less universal, and too much a human construct.
Tillich's development of Christology, with Christ as the New Being, is very significant, the way for Tillich's more general philosophical theology to find a grounding in Christianity. Tillich had a long fascination with other religions, Buddhism in particular, and was charged by some critics of relegating Christianity to a secondary status. Like many of Tillich's theological ideas, there is a tension apparent in his Christological development that exists between different traditional methods of dealing with the issue historically, philosophically and theologically.
The majority of the selections taken for this volume come from Tillich's primary work, 'Systematic Theology', a three-volume work that Tillich developed over a decade and a half near the end of Tillich's career (volume 1 was published in 1951; volume 2 in 1957; volume 3 in 1963). Taylor uses other writings as well to flesh out topics.
Each volume in this series also has a selected bibliography section -- this one for Tillich is divided into several sections: bibliographical resources; primary works of Tillich divided into nine periods of his work, including posthumous publications; finally, secondary literature about Tillich and Tillichian ideas. The book is well indexed, with indexes for subjects and for names. This is a very good book for scholarship. Much of Tillich's early work was in German (as is evidenced by the bibliography); much of his later work was in English -- thus, some of the work here is in translation.

Paul Tillich was the last great 20th-century theologian.
By James Chambers
Like Karl Barth, Tillich can be hard to read for those unaccustomed to reading scholarly theological texts, but once you get past the dense language you'll find yourself probing the deepest mysteries of Christian thinking and asking questions you've never before considered.
You may not agree with all of Tillich's ideas, but you simply can't ignore him when considering the deeper issues of modern theology. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to deepen their faith by considering issues not considered in the day-to-day Christian world.

The Quest for the Historical Jesus Continues
By The Rev. Dr. Daniel J. G. G. Block
Albert Schweitzer did not initiate the academic quest for the historical Jesus, nor did he end it. Schweitzer was, however, its most famous proponent. Second only to Schweitzer, Geza Vermes has, justifiably, become the penultimate voice of scholarship in this endeavor. Schweitzer demonstrated the importance of the apocalyptic to the historical Jesus. In his 1973 tour de force, "Jesus The Jew," Vermes emphasized Jesus' existence as a Galilean, Hasidic Jew. In this work, he firmly places Jesus within first century, Palestinian Jewish religious tradition. The result of Schweitzer's and Vermes' combined works is a less romanticized, less theologized, and more believable earthly Jesus. Although this book will disturb those who are comfortable with unquestioned piety, it is an invaluable tool for serious Bible students. It digs below the theology of the early Church to get a better view of the historical Jesus of Nazareth.
Vermes describes Jesus as an observant, first century Jew, whose behavior was very much like that of other observant, first century Jews. He shows us how Jesus' teachings relied upon bibical and charismatic authority. He shows how speaking in proverbs and parables was not a way for Jesus to obscure his message from all but the elect, but was rather a way to illustrate his teachings. He describes Jesus' preaching as closely related to the work of his rabbinical contemporaries. Perhaps most striking of all, he proves that Jesus' address of God as "Abba" was not unique.
Vermes shows that the religion of Jesus, the exorcist, the preacher, and the friend of pariahs was authentically Jewish. It was the early (largely gentile) Church, as it theologically reflected upon his life and death, which transformed that faith from Judaism to Christianity. In the end, the reader is left indebted to Vermes for his scholarship, yet still responsible to make one's own decision regarding the Lordship of Jesus, the Christ.

Know Torah, know Jesus; no Torah, no Jesus
By John S. Ryan
This fine twenty-years-after sequel to Geza Vermes's _Jesus the Jew_ is actually the third book of a series: the second -- _Jesus and the World of Judaism_ -- is not currently in print as of this writing.

That's too bad, but the present volume is entirely readable on its own terms; in fact, strictly speaking, you don't _have_ to have read _Jesus the Jew_ first either, though it's recommended that you do so.

Here Vermes is continuing his attempt to reclaim Jesus as a faithful Jew and indeed a charismatic Galilean hasid. This volume provides a more in-depth look at Jesus's own teachings and religious practices than did _Jesus the Jew_, and illustrates well that nothing Jesus said or did involved either any departure from Judaism or any attempt to found a new religion separate from Judaism. A fine closing chapter suggests that Christianity might profit by moving closer to the religion _of_ Jesus and abandoning a good deal of the religion _about_ him.

On the minus side, a few of Vermes's conclusions are puzzling and probably wrong. For example, he is the only "Jesus scholar" I know of who rejects the parable of the Good Samaritan as "probably inauthentic." Moreover, in a brief reply to critics who charged that he had provided no account of why Jesus would have been crucified, he argues that Jesus was probably just in the wrong place at the wrong time -- a reply which I find altogether unconvincing and which seems to me to point up some of the weaknesses in Vermes's account.

Nevertheless Vermes has pretty much led the way for modern Jews and Christians alike to recognize Jesus as a Jew of his own time. As I said, I'd recommend reading _Jesus the Jew_ first, but if you like Vermes, come back to this one.

Jesus is a Jew
By Professor Emeritus P. Bagnolo
Vermes as always is easily understandable and enjoyably readable for anyone with an interest in the bridge between Christianity and Judaism. He is exquisitely accurate in illuminating Jesus' Hasidic, Gallilian, Jewishness. He is even-handed, respectful of Christian ideals, but opens fresh vistas on the Messiah, Prophet and first Christian. Vernes' Jesus is masterfully portrayed in the warm light of his Hebrew nationality and religion and his innovative ideas about God. Vermes lovingly reveals his evidence concerning the religio-historical niche for the man most Christians believe to be God incarnate and who unbiased others believe to be a Prophet who greatly influenced Jews, Muslims, Christians and others for nearly 2000 years. He admits, as do many others that he does not know why Jesus was crucified, but I suspect that it had more to do with Jesus being seen by the Romans as a budding revolutionary rather than a prophet. His attack on the portico, temple businessmen solidified big-business, the church and the Roman state against him. He alone of his group was sent to the cross. That in itself was unusual, a normal Roman purge would have included all of his disciples.
Vermes opens the door to Hebrew acceptance and inclusion of this inspired Jew, who was at the very least, a great prophet.
If you want to know more about Jesus the Jew, his time and place in history as observed by one of his own people, read this thoroughly enjoyable book.

Doing Justice: Congregations and Community Organizing, by Dennis A. Jacobsen

Doing Justice is an introductory theology of congregation-based community organizing rooted in the day-to-day struggles and hopes of urban ministry and in the author’s 14 years of personal experience in community organizing ministries.

Drawing from the organizing principles of Saul Alinsky, Jacobsen weaves the theological and biblical warrants for community organizing into concrete strategies for achieving justice in the public arena. Designed to be used by congregations and church leaders, as well as by ministerial students, Doing Justice opens new vistas for community action in support of the poor, the disadvantaged, and the disenfranchised of our society.

Food for Organized Thought and Action
By Philip D. Reifenberg
I think I speak for many people -- clergy and lay, organizers and the organized -- in decrying the dearth of good, digestible faith-focused written resources for organizing. We scrounge through magazines and periodicals; we "cut-and-paste" from other disciplines (theology, sociology, political science, history, psychology, etc.); we listen to big-name and not-so-big name speakers as they expound with (or without) competence on related topics; and we mutter, "Why doesn't someone write a book?" I am a Catholic priest who's been in parish ministry for the past twenty years, and these have been some of my frustrations. I know from conversations with many colleagues that I am not alone.
So, thank you Dennis Jacobsen! "Doing Justice" is the best book of its type to hit the press in those twenty years! Sure, there've been biographies ("Let Them Call Me Rebel"), case studies ("Streets of Hope", "Upon This Rock"), populist analyses ("Who Will Tell The People?", "You Can't Be Neutral On A Moving Train"), and much more that has been truly inspirational. But not since Gregory Pierce's "Activism That Makes Sense" (1984) and "Confident & Competent" (1987) has it all been put so neatly, compactly and engagingly under one cover. Not only that, but Jacobsen goes beyond Pierce in integrating what I regard to be both a welcomed and appropriate degree of theological consideration into his discussion.
I have heard Dennis Jacobsen speak on several of the topics covered in "Doing Justice" both in Milwaukee and in the context of Gamaliel Foundation activities. But reading those pieces together with his new (at least, to me!) material is really exciting! I was particularly moved by his handling of "Self-Interest" (Chapter 6), "Building and Sustaining Organizations" (Chapter 10), and "Community" (Chapter 11). In each of these sections, he weaves a profound message that incorporates organizing principles, theological challenge, and psycho-historico-political realism.
Rick Deines's "Studies Guide" as an appendix is pure bonus!!! Even without it, "Doing Justice" would be an excellent primer in organizing for seminarians, judicatorial and/or denominational clergy groups, ecumenical ministerial associations and alliances, and groups within congregations that are either already involved in or considering becoming involved in a community organization. It is also just plain good, refreshing reading for those of us who have been "in the trenches" (or in a rut!) for a while!!!
There are some parts of the picture that are still missing, though. Such related topics as "money", enemies (i.e., adversaries, or "the opposition") and the role of Foundations in the survival and success of the kind of organizing Jacobsen describes could well be the subject of what I truly hope will be his sequel to "Doing Justice."

An essential book for congregations
By Christopher W. Cox
Too often justice ministry in a parish is assigned to wither in a peace and justice committee. How can we align an entire parish to address better the call of Matthew 25, of living in right relationship? Well, Dennis A. Jacobsen suggests how we might in "Doing Justice: Congregations and Community Organizing." The task he outlines invigorates parish life and gives it renewed direction and purpose. A worthy read!

Luther wrote the 119 letters in this volume between 1507 and 1522, during the momentous years that saw him change from an obedient and determined priest of his Order to a vigorous critic of the sale of indulgences and finally to the leader of a reformed church. In these letters Luther discusses his posting of the Ninety-five Theses, the disputations at Heidelberg, Augsburg, and Leipzig, and the bull excommunicating him.

About the Author
Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers. These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.

Getting to "really" know Luther
By G. Boritzki
If one thinks they know Luther because they are familiar with the Lutheran church, then they need to read this book. Speaking on subjects one might speak of today, you can see the praticality of this great reformer. When standing against all odds, he spoke truth, when it was not at all popular to speak the truth. This is a must read for anyone desiring to know Luther, or even understand how controversial a person Luther really was.

Awesome Tool, Easy Integration
By Andrew A Schaller
I had been looking to add Luther's Works to My Logos Libronix Digital Library System for some time. Truth be told, it was the reason I went with Logos Bible Software in the first place. The cost seemed prohibative at $250 until I found it on Amazon.com for $169 with free shipping! I read one review that said it was difficult to integrate with Libronix. I was nervous for that reason. However, it was NOT difficult at all. In fact, it was so simple, I wasn't sure I had done it right! This is an awesome tool, to have Luther's Works at your fingertips, to go from the index directly to the volume and page you need in a split second. Awesome! Thanks.

By Faith Alone (Sola Fide)
By Jonathan A Blevins
This is, in my estimation, the greatest non-canonical book ever written.

Luther expounds Paul's epistle to the Galatians with an insight, power and depth of emotion which is sorely lacking in modern commentaries. He is not concerned with the various potential interpretations of "problematic passages" that fill the pages of other commentaries. From the very first page Luther cuts to the heart of the epistle-the doctrine of justification-in the way that only he can. His bold words and plain-sense interpretations result in a work filled with much of the same force and passion that characterized the epistle itself. The grace of God and the love of Jesus Christ cling to every word like the scent of a precious perfume. I cannot recommend this work highly enough.

This is the very essence of the gospel as understood by the one who "rediscovered" the doctrines of faith and grace as he teaches us from the words of the one to whom God first revealed those doctrines. If you are looking for an up-to-date critical commentary or a greek-focused exegetical work then you will not find it here, but if you would hear a plain declaration of the power and wisdom of God then you will not find a better treatise apart from the Bible.

This volume contains Luther's full commentary on the first four chapters of the epistle (most single-volume works are abridged). Chapters five and six, unfortunately, are found in a seperate volume and the bulk of that volume is taken up with an earlier commentary on the same epistle which, honestly, is barely worth the paper it's printed on. At best it can show you how radically different the twice-born, Spirit-led exegete is from the once-born, reason-led scholar.

Movement from one community to another can create strife, pain, and social dislocation. In this astute analysis, Stephen Wilson examines the ancient sources for clues to how leaving a religious group happened, what motivated defectors, and the different ways Jews, Christians, and pagans interpreted the event. As Wilson explains, ''by and large defection was a rancorous business and provoked extreme reactions, understandably so in the case of those who became traitors or who turned violently on their former community. But even the less dramatic instances were deeply troubling.''

A bit lacking
By D. Opperwall
Wilson's text attempts to study a historical topic which is difficult to frame or approach, and unfortunately doesn't really carry off the task. Wilson's work is generally first rate, but the problems faced here seem simply to have been too great to overcome.

Surprisingly many copies seem to have shipped with serious printing errors, including problems on the cover of the book itself.

Strategies for Brief Pastoral Counseling (Creative Pastoral Care and Counseling), by Howard W. Stone

More and more professionals in ministry realized the benefits of brief pastoral counseling-typically three sessions-for addressing the real-life dilemmas of their congregants. In this very helpful resource, eleven leaders in pastoral counseling-both established leaders and new thinkers in the field-offer a convincing rationale. Based on reserach, case studies, and the latest thinking, they lay out (1) the dynamics of the pastor- parishioner relationship, including the need for collaborative, hospitable, future-oriented, and wholistic counseling, and (2) specific strategies, including brief counseling's solution-focused method, its relation to spiritual direction, its focus on people's strengths, and time limits. The volume concludes with a call for the whole field to recognize the contextual, practical character of effective, responsible pastoral counseling.

From the Publisher
From the Preface (pre-publication version): Context shapes action. It is a potent ingredient in our thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and behaviors. The times and places in which you do things influence how you do them, and circumstances shape your response to the words and actions of others. Services, products, professions, even avocations need to fit the context in which they are performed or consumed. I would not recommend sushi for a toddler’s birthday party menu—nor would I dare serve hot dogs and red Jell-O brand gelatin to my wife for an anniversary dinner (but she would be happy with the sushi). A rural general practitioner would require a new set of skills to practice medicine in a large urban emergency ward. A university English professor would need retraining to teach writing for primary school children. Anglers, of course, are accustomed to adapting to their context: jigging for walleye in a Minnesota lake requires different tackle, technique, and mystique from fly-fishing for Atlantic salmon in a Scottish stream or setting out trot lines for monster catfish in a south Texas river. Pastoral counseling is no exception. Its usual context is not a professional office in a medical arts building or psychiatric hospital. The primary context of pastoral counseling—indeed, its heart—is the congregation. In the course of pastoral conversation with those they serve, parish pastors, rabbis, and priests daily offer counsel in some form: a late night visit with a worried parishioner in the waiting room of an intensive care unit, guidance given to parents troubled by their son’s drug use, help for a married couple at the brink of divorce who have decided to give counseling a try for a session or two, spiritual direction with a widower experiencing an arid prayer life since his wife’s death, and an infinite variety of other pastoral moments. Due to their context—the many people they serve and multitude of functions they fulfill, as well as the wishes of their parishioners—ministers rarely see people in counseling for more than a few sessions and often only for one (see chapter 1).

In the congregational context, therefore, counseling inevitably is brief (“brief” in this volume designates a counseling duration of no more than ten sessions, but typically many fewer). Parish pastors have little choice in the matter; it is their reality. Like the doctors, teachers, and anglers in the illustrations above, if they are to minister effectively, they need to adopt strategies to suit that reality. As early as 1949, Seward Hiltner wrote that the time limitations of the parish suggest that most pastors’ counseling be brief. According to him, the principal benefit of brief counseling is to help a parishioner “turn the corner,“ or change direction: “Even brief counseling can often do just enough to bring a slightly new perspective, hence altering the approach to the situation and giving a chance for spontaneous successful handling of it by the parishioner.“ Generally Hiltner and his contemporaries favored an insight-oriented, long-term counseling approach. Brief pastoral counseling methods are much more finely tuned now than when he wrote these lines, and they are better designed to help people change direction in a few sessions. Turning the corner, in fact, is a primary goal of brief pastoral counseling, under the assumption that the other ministries of the church will continue to support people as they grow and move into the future. Strategies for Brief Pastoral Counseling is an attempt to synthesize the thinking of established and up-and-coming thinkers in the area of brief pastoral counseling. It follows up the work I began in Brief Pastoral Counseling and, much earlier, in Crisis Counseling. The book summarizes the literature in the brief pastoral counseling field and offers a new way, one that addresses the real, day-to-day context of pastoral counseling as it is practiced in local congregations among living, breathing, unique persons. The eleven authors of Strategies for Brief Pastoral Counseling propose an orientation toward pastoral counseling based upon short-term counseling theory and methodology, with the underlying assumption that the vast majority of counselees wish to deal expeditiously with their problems and are unable or unwilling to devote more than a few visits to the task. People seek help from religious professionals because they quickly want to address whatever is troubling them, and not necessarily to achieve insight or delve into their distant pasts. While the primary context of pastoral counseling is the congregation, the authors do not intend to exclude pastoral care and counseling specialists; indeed, it is my hope that many of them will read these chapters. Some may find themselves working once again in the parish setting as changes in insurance benefits and health care delivery cause a shift away from long-term therapy for troubled people. Indeed, a majority of the work of specialists, whether they are hospital chaplains, private practitioners in pastoral counseling, or military chaplains, is already brief in nature. Experiences and ideas of these professionals are needed in the conversation. It is my hope that the ministries of parish pastors and pastoral counseling specialists will inform and enrich each other.

From Chapter One (pre-publication version):

The Changing Times: A Case for Brief Pastoral Counseling
Howard W. Stone

Tony Hillerman, best-selling author of mysteries set in the American southwest, tells the true tale of Black Jack Ketchum, the most successful train robber Folsom, New Mexico, had ever known. Black Jack figured out that, while chugging up the old horseshoe curve southeast of Folsom, the Colorado and Southern train had to slow down so much that a horseman could hop out of the stirrups and onto the train without even having to gallop his horse. It was, apparently, like snatching candy from a baby. The system worked for him over and over again, so brilliantly that he saw no reason to change it.

Eventually the Colorado and Southern Railroad management figured out what he was doing. They packed the train with guards. The next time Black Jack rode up in his usual style, they shot and captured him and quickly brought him to trial—after which, Hillerman adds, “he was consequently and subsequently hanged over at Clayton with such enthusiasm that his head came off.” Ketchum had a method that worked perfectly for a time, but the times changed.

The times are changing for health care and pastoral care just as they changed for Black Jack Ketchum. Long-term therapy was the underpinning of pastoral counseling in the early days of the twentieth century, and remains so for some practitioners in the twenty-first century. It was appropriate then because it was based upon the best information available at the time. Today new information is available. This new data not only favors brief approaches but suggests that, except in a few select cases, long-term counseling is no longer practical. The medical profession has gotten the word. So have mental health researchers, the United States Department of Health and Education, insurance companies, and mental health providers. If the Colorado and Southern Railroad were still operating today, its managed health care organization most likely would mandate some version of brief counseling (in combination with pharmaceuticals, when appropriate) for the treatment of employees’ mental health problems.

The fact is, congregational ministers, priests, and rabbis traditionally have practiced brief counseling for many generations in the parishes they serve. As a variety of other helping professionals “discover” brief counseling with its many advantages—it is effective, enduring, economical, and humane—the time has come for parish pastors to reclaim it as the preferred strategy for helping troubled parishioners who come to them for guidance in resolving their difficulties.

The basic premise of this chapter is that brief pastoral counseling methods should be the primary mode of operation for pastoral caregivers—parish pastors and chaplains as well as pastoral counseling specialists.

Focus on Research

When choosing methods to use in your counseling, what do you take into consideration? Your training? Readings in the field, amply illustrated with individual case studies? Past experience? How we go about counseling parishioners certainly grows out of our own experience, but it also needs to rely on the demonstrable experience of others and the outcomes of their counseling. Well-constructed research documents the work of others in a controlled way and helps to mitigate the unavoidable bias of the helper who is doing the counseling. Pastoral counseling needs to pay more attention to such research, especially to outcome studies, than the field traditionally has done.

My personal physician is a fine family practitioner named Joseph Cappel. When I go to see him, I expect him to have read all of the current journals and bulletins that apply to his area of medicine. If I have a physical ailment, I want him to use state-of-the-art procedures that are based on the best and latest research in the field. Let us say he has two choices of therapy for my condition, and both have been shown in research to be equally effective but one is more invasive, takes longer, and is more expensive than the other. I trust (and my HMO demands) that he will consider those findings when he prescribes my treatment.

Surely clergy have a similar obligation to their parishioners. We have been trained to give heed to revelatory personal experience; however, carefully designed qualitative and quantitative research may be equally revelatory. We need to stay abreast of sound research in our field, and to consider it in choosing how we offer care to those who trust us with their well-being.

Most people who come to us for help are not on a quest for self-discovery. They seek to resolve a specific problem and move on as quickly as possible, not to overhaul their personality. Even though many counselors who are in therapy themselves appreciate and value their personal journey of discovery, for the most part their counselees do not. After the first session, most people do not return for many additional sessions, if they return at all. The pastoral counseling process is—by default if not by design—a short one. People tell us by their actions that, along with alleviation of their troubles, in counseling they want brevity.

There was a time when insurance companies tacitly condoned the long-term therapy bias by at least partially covering its costs. That is no longer the case. Today many health maintenance organizations and insurers reimburse only the more cost-effective brief therapies. The change to short-term modalities has sent ripples throughout the mental health community and set off controversy between proponents of the two approaches.

Is brief counseling a sign of the times? In our fast food, instant coffee, crash diet, microwave age, have people lost their patience to work toward long-term solutions to their problems? Is the desire for a quick fix part of their pathology? Or is it a sign of health, of a willingness to tackle a problem head-on and promptly do what is needed to get on with the business of living?

Excellent resource for pastoral counseling
By Thomas V. Frederick
Stone's Strategies provides an excellent overview of brief pastoral counseling. This single resource provides enough of both theory and practice to inform readers about this type of pastoral care. I highly recommend this readable resource.

Rev. Scott
By Scott W. Peterson
Don't be misled into thinking that just because you counsel people briefly that you are practicing brief counseling. Brief Pastoral Counseling is a methodology for empowering others to create their own solutions, and in so doing, to begin to take charge of their own life. If you are tired of trying to give people answers and having overly dependent relationship with church members, then study this book.

Brief is Great
By Clint Schnekloth
Many pastors do indeed provide brief pastoral counseling. I know I do. Often you don't even know you're providing counseling until your in the middle of it. Stone's book helps prepare pastors for this reality, even to embrace it. This is a great book to read if your idea of counseling has been primarily shaped by longer term forms of therapy and/or psychotherapy.
