From the Preface: The title of this final volume of my narrative commentary on the Fourth Gospel was inspired by a sermon of the eighth-century abbot St. Theodore the Studite on the adoration of the cross: "Indeed an unheard of exchange! We are given life instead of death, incorruptibility instead of corruption, glory instead of dishonor." The Johannine account of the death and resurrection of Jesus (John 18-20), with its lengthy introduction (chaps. 13-17), reads Jesus' death as a departure by means of a "lifting up." God is made known, and a community of believers is founded. Its members will love as he has loved---guided, strengthened, and taught by the Paraclete. As the cross draws together the threads of the story, the traditional climax to the story of Jesus, the resurrection (20:1-31), has a different function in the Johannine narrative strategy. My study of the Gospel will close with a brief reflection on the place of John 21.
Some recent scholarship has withdrawn approval for the approach I have adopted for my reading of the Fourth Gospel. A postmodern reading of the Bible can no longer privilege the biblical text. The Bible, like all other imposed "canon," is a collection of moments in the endless play of intertext that has been frozen and then imposed as a "rule" within a culture. In a parallel fashion, the reader is also an unstable text, the result of the interweaving of many texts, none of which should be taken as the norm. Yet I have pursued my project to its conclusion. One of the many important contributions of postmodern scholarship is its focus on context. My context is critical scholarship of the Christian tradition from within the Christian tradition. One of my difficulties with scholars who demand that the Bible be removed from its canonical position is their apparent neglect of their own context: academics who are who they are and do what they do because of the Christian tradition.
Fernando Segovia rightly asks in his gracious review of Belief in the Word: "Do all readers come up with the same implied reader?" My implied reader will not be everyone's implied reader, as factors outside the text inevitably influence my reading. Yet every attempt is made to respond to the perceived strategies of an author in the text to create a reader in the text, in the hope that it will speak to real readers of the text. Unlike many narrative critics, I regard the original readers of the Gospel as an important point of reference in following the interplay between the author and reader in the text. Thus, I hope to trace an implied reader that would have spoken eloquently to a Christian community at the close of the first century. My implied reader is only one of the many possible because there is no interpretative context that can ever claim to have exhausted all the potential of a given text. "Comprehension is limited by the capacity of the comprehender, and inexhaustibility is one of the marks of a work of art." The limited comprehension created by context is not detrimental until one pretends to be free from it. . . .
