About the Author
Walter Brueggemann is Professor Emeritus at Columbia Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and was a past president of the Society of Biblical Literature. His most recent books include Disruptive Grace: Reflections on God, Scripture, and the Church and Journey to the Common Good.

Patrick D. Miller is Charles T. Haley Professor Emeritus of Old Testament Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. He is the author of numerous books, including "The Religion of Ancient Israel". He is coeditor of the Interpretation commentary series and the Westminster Bible Companion series. In 1998, he served as President of the Society of Biblical Literature. He was also editor of "Theology Today" for twenty years.

A challenging interpretation of Old Testament texts.

Brueggemann combines his sociological and exegetical skills to provide an interpretation of Old Testament texts that is challenging and meaningful. He highlights the tension between institutionalisation and revolution, complacency and subversion which exists in the Bible. On the one hand, there are texts that glorify and support the establishment, which tolerate the oppression of the majority by the powerful. On the other hand, there is God's voice responding to the cry of the oppressed. This is a God who wants to enter a new, and transformative relationship with humanity.
Those of us who confine our interpretation of scripture to the literary or the historical, or who see the Bible as confirming a politically conservative view of the world, will find this book uncomfortable. Brueggemann is not neutral - nor should he be - and has obvious affinity for the voice of liberation, transformation, justice and peace that calls to us from the Biblical texts. Sometimes, his interpretation is a little forced (as in chapter 5) but such an interpretation is always easy to read and definitely worth considering.
As one who enjoys the wisdom literature of the Old Testsament, I found Brueggemann's critique of the sociological background of wisdom more than a little disconcerting. His words challenged me to reflect on my own position in society and to ask myself about the extent to which it influences my response to the Old Testament.
A final word: the second chapter of the book, "Covenant as a subversive paradigm", is inspirational.

Outstanding Overview

Lohse has done the church an invaluable service by providing this overview of Luther's theology. In the first part of the book, the author sets the stage for the remainder of the study with some preliminary chapters delaing with issues such as the historical and theological situation in the early sixteenth century and Martin Luther's early life.
The second part of the book is the most helpful in that it traces the development of Luther's thought historically in the context of his many debates, disputations and conflicts. From his marginal notes in Augustine to his debates with the antinomians, Lohse provides a good understanding of how Luther's thought took its final form.
The third part of the book attempts to approach Luther's theology from a more systematic perspective, dealing with it topically. It is divided into chapters on sola scriptura, reason and faith, sin, justification, the church, etc. Lohse provides some crucial insights into Luther's views on each of these doctrines in this section. The book concludes with a brief appendix on Luther's attitude toward the Jews - an important addition at the close of the twentieth century.
This book should be the standard reference on the theology of Luther for years to come.

Lewis (religion, Vanderbilt Univ.) has written a competent, if uncritical and derivative study of the origins of King's philosophy and civil rights activism. He focuses on three major influences: sense of place (the South), idea of community, and Christian optimism. To Lewis, King was far more deeply affected by the Southern black church than by any higher theological studies in the North. Lewis sees his work as a corrective to studies which overemphasize formal theology and underplay culture. In fact, works on King by scholars like David Garrow ( Bearing the Cross: Martin Luther King Jr. & the Southern Leadership Conference, 1955- 1968 , Morrow, 1986), Stephen Oates ( Let the Trumpet Sound: The Life of Martin Luther King Jr. , LJ 7/82), and Taylor Branch ( Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-63 , LJ 1/89) have emphasized the importance of Southern black religion in King's life and career, presenting a balanced view of King's roots. Lewis gives us a useful summary rather than a major contribution. Recommended primarily for large university and public libraries.

About the Author
Dr. Baldwin is a native of Alabama and received his B.A. in History from Talladega College. He then received an M.A. degree in Black Church Studies followed by a M.Div. degree in Theology at Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York. In 1980 Dr. Baldwin earned a Ph.D. degree in American Christianity from Northwestern University. He has taught at Wooster College in Ohio, Colgate University in New York, Colgate-Rochester Divinity School and currently is Professor in Religious Studies at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Baldwin is the author of over sixty articles and several books, and he and his wife live in Nashville, TN.

This work appears to be the most cutting-edge, sophisticated text available on the integration of self-development, counseling technique, and Christian theological reflection. The theoretical and philosophical base is highly relational and contextual, as evidenced by consistent attention to matters of intersubjectivity, multiculturalism, and ethics. The author uses the psychodynamic rubric of transference and countertransference to unearth the hidden power of counselor-client interaction - a power that has the potential for great healing or destruction. The overall theme and thesis of the book is this: In the counseling context, therapists and ministers have the high calling to use their `selves' in ways that are responsible, reflective, respectful and real. This necessitates a commitment to personal and spiritual growth through self-awareness and clinical consultation.
The first two chapters provide a detailed history of countertransference in the psychodynamic and pastoral care fields. These chapters illustrate the general attitudinal shift from fearful shunning to responsive acceptance of countertransference in helping relationships. Chapter three continues to lay theoretical groundwork through a concise examination of relational, postmodern philosophy and it's implications for human communication and theological reflection. Chapters four through six delve into the complexity of "understanding one's personal issues and emotional reactions" in helping relationships. Extremely helpful and well-written case studies are used to illustrate and apply the concepts to highly believable real-life situations. The consistent theme throughout these chapters is that the counselor's emotional responses can function as either healing or harmful therapeutic junctures. The final chapter integrates the concepts into a theological framework that is compelling and relevant.
The intended audience includes persons in the fields of pastoral care and ministry, social work, counseling psychology or therapy. Overall, this book is highly recommended as an essential resource for therapist self-development.

Being Wise in our Time

Pamela Cooper-White's "Shared Wisdom" is worth reading by everyone who engages in all of the helping professions. Considering the process of communication from both the sender and the receiver, the author weaves a convincing paradigm of the intersubjective and relational nature of theraputic communication.

For all those interested in the assessing the effectiveneess of pastoal or clinical conseling this study provides the reader with a concetual road map which guides the reader into a depth of self understanding. Here I found that the "wounded healer" model, often time consider as the core focus of pastoral care and coundeling, is profoundly challenged by Cooper-Whites senstivity to the necessithy of self awareness in "contertransference." This work is a must read for those who are wlling to undertake the challenge of bocomming the "healed wounder healer."

The book is great, beware the Kindle edition!!

I really enjoyed this book, but I bought it for a class for Kindle, and the entire 7th chapter is missing! It just isn't there! So, if you want her theological reflection at the end, DO NOT buy the Kindle edition...so frustrated.

Very helpful!

This is the book for people who care about God and want to worship more fully, but aren't sure how to do so. I'm going to use this for how I worship on Sunday; I'm clergy, but I think it's just as good for laypeople, and perhaps more important since most clergy have had formation on how to worship. The trip through the Pentecost liturgy is a good example of how this can be done, and I'm looking forward to preparing for this year's Pentecost worship using it as a blueprint.

Not a Fan so no title

I bought this book for a class I was going to take. The book is a bit hard to understand and sometimes confusing. The author does not actually come from a Christian perspective. And he makes many assumptions on worship which confuses the reader even more. Kudos to the author for writing the book and researching everything for the book, this is to be praised. But it has missed many points and assumptions are not real good. This is not a book which should be used for non-denominational religions. I will be returning mine.

About the Author
Mark Allan Powell is a Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary and an internationally recognized theologian and Bible scholar. The author of more than 25 books and 100 articles, Dr Powell has served as a Visiting Professor at universities such as the University of California, Berkeley, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Chicago, as well as at schools in Estonia, Tanzania, and Russia. He is best known for his work in literary criticism, Matthean studies, and historical Jesus studies.

A great textbook

I have used Powell's book as a text for my undergraduate "Life and Teachings of Jesus" course during this past year. It is extremely well written and organized. Powell has a gift for presenting complex information in accessible form. The charts and tables in the book are particularly helpful and to the point. My students consistently compliment the book for its content and clarity. The only disappointment is that the chapters on each of the four canonical gospels are not structured in a way that mirrors their narrative shape. The struggle to lead students through the worlds created by the gospels and to present relevant critical issues at the same time is most difficult. Powell balances these concerns as well as anyone and much better than most. If only there was space in such a textbook to lead students to a discovery of the themes of the gospels instead of listing and describing them. That is a task still left to the instructor, but Powell's book provides excellent support.

Great Introduction

This is a very good book for summarizing dozens of scholarly fields into a coherent 'Introduction' of the canonized gospels. Great starting poing if you don't know much about Q or the M and L material. Sufficient discussion about the characteristics and histories of the four gospels. My only knock against this book is that the author too often makes the statement 'most scholars' in order to back a particular hypothesis - refuting a quote from the book that evidence should be 'weighed, not counted.' Still, I learned a lot from the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the New Testament texts.

A great introduction to the gospels

Most biblical studies are quite frankly designed for scholars and seminary students. As a general reader, I can unhesitatingly recommend this small volume that helps you understand the basics of the Gospels.
There are three sections for each of the four Gospels, discussing Characteristics (what makes it different from the other three Gospels), Historical background (where, when and why they were probably written and whether Matthew, Mark, Luke and John actually wrote them) and Major Themes (the messages that each writer wanted to get across). Things that the general reader might not be aware of, like the phantom "Q" Gospel that probably provided Matthew and Luke with material and the controversy over whether John or Lazarus was the "Beloved Disciple", are introduced in easy to understand fashion without overwhelming non-scholars. There is also an appendix summarizing the "Gnostic Gospels" which, although I wouldn't count on finding them in new copies of the New Testament anytime soon, are gaining credibility with scholars (especially the Gospel of Thomas).
I found it interesting and informative.

Thought provoking

Every now and then you read a book that completely changes how you look at or study something. The Parables by Luise Scottroff falls into that category for me. I have been reading, studying, preaching, and teaching on the Parables of Jesus nigh on 40 years. I have been one who took the historical-critical approach and a literary reading as my starting point. Along comes this book and turns my interpretative understandings upside down.

Scottroff looks at the parabls from Jesus' audience point of view... makes us hear them with the ears of a people who were living as oppressed people under Roman occupation... Victims of absentee landlords, crooked investors, slave owners, and a corrupt rabbinate in Jerusalem who kowtowed to its occupies. Understood this way, the characters and stories and lessons become radically different. The Workers in the Vineyard become not "wicked" but people fighting for their land and subsistence.

Just this morning I was reading an op-Ed piece in the NY Times entitled The Global Farmland Rush which talked about a global land rush by rich corporations and greedy governments. Often they promise jobs it then hire their own people a d take all the profits. Suddenly Jesus' story sprang to life.

A serious book for people who want to see these wonderful stories in new and refreshing ways.

Overall a book worth reading

This book started out great. By telling the story of his life, Franklin then showed how the Black Church influenced his life. From that part he described the various ways in which the Black Church has dealt with the American mainstream. However, the book then went into a totally different track by discussing how churches can use foundations to create change. It almost becasme a how-to in getting money from foundations. It was this part that confused me as to the overall point of the book.
