About the Author
Joerg Rieger (PhD, Duke University) is Wendland-Cook Professor of Constructive Theology at Perkins School of Theology, SMU. An internationally recognized scholar and activist, he has engaged in questions of liberation, theology and economics for over two decades, addressing the relation of theology to public life. Rieger is the author of many books includingOccupy Religion (with Kwok Pui-lan), Grace under Pressure, Globalization and Theology, No Rising Tide, Christ and Empire, God and the Excluded and Remember the Poor. He is also the coauthor of Beyond the Spirit of Empire: New Perspectives in Politics and Religion with Brazilian theologian Jung Mo Sung and Argentinian theologian Nestor Miguez. Rieger has lectured throughout the U.S. as well as internationally, including presentations in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and China. In the Dallas area, he is active in the religion and labor movement as a member of the steering committee of Jobs with Justice and a co-founder of the Workers' Rights Board.

Crusades, conquest, and commerce have spread the Christian faith for hundreds of years; Christ & Empire seeks to peel away the colonial legacy of Christology to find the true Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ's own refusal to submit to empire offers an intriguing and ironic contrast to the historical legacy of Christian empires, in this thoughtful, scholarly, and extensively researched treatise. Highly recommended for Christology shelves.

The Interaction Between Empire and Christianity

This well-researched book reveals how the "empire" shapes our theologies - both dominant theologies and the alternative theologies. Rieger explores the church during the periods of different empires (eg. Roman, Spanish, U.S., etc) to show the theological shaping force of empire. This is a book I will keep for constant reference.

This is an amazing combination of current biblical, historical, and postcolonial studies to present a readable yet profound reflection on Christ that allows Christ to disturb us and awaken us from our slumber and imperial allegiance.
