HHISTORY DIVORCED FROM THEOLOGY

Although dated this is an excellent one volume history of the ancient Levant. Ahlstrom who devoted his scholarshp to understanding the historical elements of Israelite history is at his best in this one volume overview of Ancient Palestine. I highly recommend it for those interested in the history of the region as opposed to the theological understanding of the region.

Mostly biblical narrative of history of Palestine with some historical, geographical and archeological context added.

It is history of Palestine mostly according to Hebrew Bible, with some other added history for the eras that no biblical account is available for. Not surprisingly, it starts with early bronze age, and ends with end of Persian period. There are some archeological references added in foot notes, only if they support the biblical narrative. So if you want to read biblical history of ancient Palestine with geographical and some historical and archeological context added to it, this is the book for you.
If you are interested in secular, real history of ancient Palestine, look elsewhere.

A Pneumatology That is Both Constructive and Faithful

Moltmann has long been recognized as the premier current Christian theologian. This volume, the third in his systematic theology, adresses the important issues of pneumatology to the questions of our time. The Spirit as the Divine Energy of Life is the theme which dominates the discussion. Life prevails in the face of death and darkness. The activity of God's Spirit is reviewed both within and outside of the realm of the Church. This stroke will appear dangerous to some and refreshing for others.
Although Moltmann's universalism is balanced by his other work (particularly "The Crucified God") there is room for concern here on the part of many coservative evangelicals. "Universal" Spirit is emphasized somewhat to the neglect of "Holy" Spirit. Surely one must not necessarily preclude the other, but this is not as well defined as I would have hoped.
Pentecostal and Charismatic believers will find material here both for support and for critique. It is remarkable to find such a thorough and balanced treatment of the charismatic giftings from an author outside of our ranks. His recognition of Pentecostal insights is accompanied by observation of our areas of shortsightedness.
The concern of the Spirit for the redemption of the whole creation is well represented here. Moltmann is critical of mainstream Christianity's neglect of this crucial issue in the realm of pneumatology. If Spirit is directly involved in the creation of the world, so would be the case with the maintainance and redemption of the created order. Ecological concern is an important element of Moltmann's thesis.
The blending of various streams of Christian thought into a constructive theology is impressive. This is a trans-Protestant work which takes seriously the broadness of the Spirit's work as well as the broadness of Christian experience.
No contemporary study of the subject should fail to take seriously this landmark work. As readable as it is scholarly, this incomparable contribution to the study of the Spirit is required reading for students and teachers of theology today.

Great material -- sorry but text-book presentation robs it of its potential to inspire!

Powell is one of God's gifts to us as an inspiring spiritual writer. That said, this book, which was intended as a course-work book for college courses, is not nearly as inspiriing as any if his others I have read. No wonder college students are leaving the church. It seems that course-work is precluded from inspiration. Sorry.

Advances in artificial intelligence pose more and more questions to our self-understanding. Herzfeld reflects in this book on some of the theological implications of artificial intelligence for the question what it means to be created in the image of God. She does so, not only by analyzing the human desire for artificial inteliience, but also by analyzing some theological approaches to the image of God (notably those by Reinhold Niebuhr, Von Rad and Karl Barth).

The book is theologically as well as scientifically quite strong. Herzfeld knows her theology as well as her computer science.

For me it was a sensation to read such a refreshing book, as it really forced me to reflect on my own ideas about the interaction of nature, theology, and technology. If you are interested in these matters, read this book. At the moment there is no book like this one on such an interesting and important topic.

This book will likely be an early classic in the field of theology and artificial intelligence. Professor Herzfeld from St. John's University looks at the image of God through Niebuhr, Von Rad and Barth as reason, regency or function or purpose, and the ability to have a relationship with God. Then she looks at intelligent machines in the same three categories. Chapter 5 provides a Christian critique of three transhumanists assumptions. AI advocates believe in a form of immortality, cybernetic immortality--we can achieve eternity by transferring the contents of our brains to a succession of intellectual machines. Second, she looks at AI advocates' belief that humans can expand their domain, their regency, in space, mining and elsewhere without the failures humans experience, If we look to intelligent robots to overcome our failures, we will have created a "stand-in for God" and make them idols. If we see reason as merely instrumental, then instead of people seeing themselves as caretakers of creation and thus children of God, we will see the work of the world done through computers, we will break our relationship with God, and then tend to see creation as our own creation. The last chapter explores a human-computer ethic. Just as we are imperfect images of God, so intelligent robots are imperfect images of humans. Just as we ignore, oppose or fight each other, we move closer to the machine. If machines can become intelligent, perhaps God, who has a relationship with us as a free gift might bestow that gift of relationship with thinking machines, though "we cannot know the nature of nor share that relationship." 92 I have not done justice to the quality of her thought but I believe her framework and where it leads her in the last chapter is a great introduction to the questions of theology and artificial intelligence.

McFague's Most Important Book- even if you disagree with her

McFague is a likeable and thoughtful scholar. I've had the good fortune of studying with her and found her to be kind, gentle, and full of wit and understanding.
McFague's books may be divided into two sections. The first includes Speaking in Parables and Metaphorical Theology, books primarily concerned with understanding and interpreting Christian metaphors at a time in which traditional Christianity appeared to be losing purchase on the world. Of these two, Metaphorical Theology is the more important one (explores the paradigmatic shape of theology and the role of its images -- incorporates holistic insights from philosophy of science and studies of metaphor).
Models of God represents the beginning of a new stage in McFague's work. It is more than just the crystallization of her feminist and ecological convictions and the further development of models suggested in MT. Really, it is a development from a call to understand the world to a call to change the world.
As such, the gloves are off and McFague refuses to mince words --- I call it 'antithetical speech' --- she means to have it out with all of the things that has brought the world to the brink of nuclear and ecological disaster (nuclear threat especially, written at the time of Chernobyl and Ronald Reagan). At the heart of the problem, McFague argues, is a hierarchical, patriarchal, monarchial, dualistic view of the world (bad). McFague proposes a new theology which is tentative, prophetic, iconoclastic, and egalitarian (good).
As an evangelical Christian (here it comes!), however, I find Models of God to be prematurely dismissive of biblical and historical theology. McFague paints with a broad brush when talking about why we are where we are. It's okay to claim that traditional Christianity is a complicit and hurtful factor in the world. To some extent, fine, let's face it. At the same time, however, it is certainly a lot more complex than that (what about Enlightenment/Rationalistic ideals which were quite hostile to orthodox Christianity and friendly to liberalism? What about Christian simplicity?).
The replacement of traditional models with "more suitable" metaphors or models, for our time, seems to me problematic for several reasons:
1. The grounds for suspicion --- you don't dismiss some models as idolatrous and dangerous without seriously jeopardizing your own. McFague's criticisms take place from a stance of transcendence --- how can she declare unequivocally what is relevant and what is irrelevant? Yet she seems to do precisely this. She believes that no one has access to pure reality, but she seems to declare her beliefs triumphantly and without an ounce of self-doubt (Kantian arrogance?).
2. Pluralism as a means for overcoming idolatry --- I'm not sure that a plurality of models is going to do anything but muddle what you have to say and make you prone to follow whatever comes down the pipe five minutes from now.
3. Models/Metaphors --- McFague's accent is on the static, ahistorical, atemporal. Metaphors, on the contrary, come within a temporal, narrative context. McFague's models are interesting 'thought experiments' but little more than that. She tends to be atomistic (what about paradigms?).
4. Metaphors --- I find it hard to claim this as a metaphorical theology because it doesn't seem to take Christian models and metaphors seriously. This is evident in the very attempt to change/correct images, a view of metaphors which most studies (including McFague's) deny possible. Her treatment of Christian metaphors is purely interested in their ornamental value (deprecating content but keeping form). Thus Jesus become a destabilizing, nonhierarchical figure who ate with everybody. Yes, but Christians have always said more (and less) than this! McFague identifies the function of the parables (destabilizing) with the normative content. This is Christian only by accident (i.e. comes from Episcopalian/liberal Protestantism).
It is not simply a matter of thinking Jesus is the central metaphor/model for your tradition, and a nice guy to boot --- but taking the New Testament witnesses seriously in all their variegated splendour, that makes a theology distinctly Christian.
All said and done, Models of God is important for several reasons. First, beyond the thundering declarations are some pretty sensible arguments --- McFague is one of the most balanced and important feminist and ecological theologians of the first generation. Second, she is a damn good writer --- it is colourful but not maudlin. Third, she draws attention to matters epistemological and metaphysical without being wordy or pedantic. Fourth, she may be right in her assessment --- Christianity may be more hurtful or idolatrous in the long run. I just don't believe it is.

Sallie McFague's book excellently redefines how God should
be envisioned in the current, postmodern society.
McFague does an excellent job constructing a positive image of
God that should be considered by any modern reader,
especially one interested in the ecological crisis
or the nuclear threat. Drawing upon the progress of
earlier theologians in these areas, McFague has written
an intense and incredibly important book for the modern
era, and one that should be seriously considered
by every person who is concerned about the state of the
planet and of all humanity.
In addition to the above positive points, McFague's book is an enticing
read; it is also very thorough and scholarly in its development. Simply stated,
it's a "must read."

Reclaiming the Truth

Fiornza's book is another great along with the many others she has wrote. She brings the reality of the Book of Revelation to life. I used her book, along with others, in a religion class. Her book by far was fascinating and truthful. I will warn this book is not for people who do not have an open mind. It is hard reading and takes time, but it is a breakthrough for feminist apocraphyl theology. This book is also not for those who think the Book of Revelation is going to happen tomorrow. I recommend this book for anyone interested in the academic feminist study of the Book of Revleation. It will definitely open up yor eyes!

Joy indeed!

So much of what is considered contemplative practice in the Christian church derives from European monastic practices in one way or another. Despite the fact that many of the early Desert Fathers and other early theologians were Africans, their practices and history became part and parcel of the larger 'Christendom' experience. Despite the fact that monastics live in community, their contemplative and mystical practices tended to be individual in character; certainly the Desert Fathers were individual practitioners, however much they were in reality tied to their community.

It is the communal aspect in practice that is often lacking in modern expressions of contemplative work. However, it need not be so, as Barbara Holmes shows, drawing on the broader African experience of contemplative communal practices. 'I am contending that communal contemplation is richer than the immediacy of personal experience because the experience, the story, the event is subjected to the gaze of both the individual and the community.' The African-American community has lost much of its recognition of the history of this, and views with suspicion attempts to force a European-dominated history of religion on its own expression of Christianity.

Holmes draws examples from the history of Africans in America, from the days of gatherings of slaves to celebrate their faith to later church institutions and communities. Holmes includes her own experiences and history in this broader context. Holmes describes herself in some ways as being a front-porch Anchorite, and draws her own family's experiences with communal and family-based worship and education practices to show the impact of these things, not just for her, but for her family and wider community. She worries that the church is not remembering its past and its more vital spiritual legacy. 'I am concerned about the life and future of the black church because of its monothematic approach to worship. ... Retrieving this legacy is important because we can no longer assume that the tradition will be passed down through generations of church-going families.'

While I am certain that this is an important book for the African American community and the Black church as a whole, I am not really qualified to give this kind of assessment. What I can do is speak to how the book influences me. In my first semester of seminary (now reaching back nearly a decade ago), I took a course on spiritual practices in the Christian church over time. Many people in this course had trouble connecting with many of the practices presented, because their denominational experiences were in narrow bands of the possibilities of Christian experience. I was honoured to be able to teach in the class in successive years, and for five years got to relive the experience and test out practices in new ways with new people. How I wish that Holmes had written this book sooner! Despite the thoroughness of the curriculum of that course, one of the things students often commented upon was the lack of African-American and African expressions of Christianity. Holmes' book would remedy that, and has introduced new ideas to my own consideration of practices I follow, as well as new perspectives on other practices that might be useful as I think about the worship life in my own congregation where I am chaplain.

There is joy indeed.

A Rich and Rare Contribution to the Subject

"Joy Unspeakable: Contemplative Practices of the Black Church" by Barbara A. Holmes is a rich and rare contribution to the subject. You will search far and wide to find anyone discussing spiritual formation in the history, culture, and present situation of the Black Church. Thus Holmes' contribution, by focus alone, is an important one.

Holmes does an excellent job "re-imaging" contemplation. That is, in "Euro-Cultures" contemplation is often seen only as individual and silent. However, as Holmes carefully details, African American Christianity has practiced communal, active, verbal contemplation.

Holmes is especially insightful when she derives contemplative practices from the historical black church in slavery. From lament, to dancing, to the hush arbor, to the ring shout, to the slave spirituals, and much more, Holmes explains how each of these rituals were contemplative in that they led the community to see with spiritual eyes God's goodness in the midst of humanity's badness and madness.

Holmes also does an excellent job explaining how holistic and integrative African American faith was and is. Heavenly hope, for African American believers, is certainly about a future filled with relationship and joy. However, it is also about seeing and experiencing God NOW, even in the midst of the horrors of slavery and racism.

For African American Christians wanting to "tap into" their spiritual legacy, "Joy Unspeakable" will become a standard. For European American Christians wanting to understand and learn from their brothers and sisters in the faith, "Joy Unspeakable" is a must read.

Barbara Holmes has written with simplicity, but with deep analytical mind and she leads her audience into the depths of African American spirituality. Reading this work has given me a lot of insight into the 'joy' that beams with African American spirituality and its connection to their history beyond the barriers of congregational setting. It points to that seamless theme that identifies the black church as a unique experience. It is very insightful and educative!

If We Would Only Listen

This is a difficult review to write because, on every page, Spirit and Resistance challenges the sacred assumptions of the dominant white culture, and, I am clearly a member of that culture.

Here are just a few examples of what this means. Professor Tinker notes that we in the dominant culture do not realize the advantage we have because we get to name (signify) everything. If, for example, we call ourselves "civilized," the "elect," or "developed," we will, of near necessity, understand someone who is different as "uncivilzed, an enemy of God or "underdeveloped." Such significations account for our penchant for treating the American Indian as vermon (in the old days) and as non-existent today.

In the same manner, Professor Tinker challenges the rampant individualism of the dominant culture through his focus on the ontological priority of the tribe in American Indian thought and culture. He even challenges what I once thought the most radical expression of Christianity - Liberation Theology - by exposing its individualism. He also argues for not allowing those who are not culturally competent to partake of American Indian spirituality because it will result in stealing the Indian spirit as we stole the Indian land.

All of Professor Tinker's arguments are cogent and challenge the assumptions of the Dominant culture. The challenge is so great that the reader needs to take his or her time with the book so that an alternative to the ways we often painfully live might be glimpsed by those of us so accustomed to oppressing others that we do not even know we are doing it.
