Limitations of Survey History: Little depth or breadth, no comparison of past to present
By M. Frost
Keep in mind that this is a very short book, only 158 pages. The primary text is about 145 pages, that loses a lot of space to about 50 illustrations and pictures. There is also a good 12-page "A Guide to Further Reading". The author tries to cover a lot of material, but trying to cover nearly 500 years of detailed theology and history in such a short amount of space means much is left out and there is very little depth to any issue. Often things come across as just saying that someone lived in such a time and place and had a thought about something Lutheran.

As an ecumenically-minded Eastern Orthodox Christian I enjoy learning about other Christian faith groups, esp. those that have an extensive history, world presence, comprehensive theology, and are liturgical. This means getting an understanding of some of the core Protestant groups, primarily Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, and Reformed. So when I saw this book on a discount table priced very inexpensively, I bought it.

I'm not exactly sure at what grade level this work is intended, but it feels like it could be useful for high school juniors/seniors or for an introductory class to Protestant denominations for college freshmen. But this is really just a very general introduction.

This is a 2-part book. The first is a general history of Lutheranism, with sections on the Old World, New World, Missionary activity, and worldwide Lutheranism ecumenical activities. The second is a rather general discussion about Lutheran theology in areas like justification, law vs. gospel, the two kingdoms, etc.

From an Orthodox perspective, a big shortcoming is a complete lack of a overview of the current theology and practice of the 3 major historical strains of Lutheranism: Germany, Scandanavia (esp. Sweden), and the USA. The USA alone has a least 2 major differing parties: the liberal ELCA vs the conservative Missouri Synod, who seem to me to be almost 2 entirely different faith groups. Which group is more faithful to historical, confessional Lutheranism? This is ignored. Is there something similar in Germany or Sweden? Overall, I wish the author would've spent time discussing what traditional confessional Lutheranism and its proponents held versus what modern Lutherans hold today. This is needed in areas like the nature and meaning of the Eucharist, in particular, but also for the 3 Lutheran sacraments (Baptism, Communion, and Confession), in general, the role of Episcopacy (Scandanavia), the rise of female clergy, and ongoing moral issues (abortion, contraception, divorce/remarriage, non-marital co-habitation, sexual ethics, homosexual marriage, and openly accepting homosexual clergy).

A key failing of this book is the lack of an index. So when you want to refer back to anything in it, you have to search the broad table of contents. Sadly, because this was published in 1994 there is no mention of the Roman Catholic-Lutheran agreement on justification that happened later that decade.

Overall, this book attempts to do too much with too little. It doesn't appear to do justice to the complexities of the initial Lutheran theological positions nor the diversity in theology in today's various Lutheran bodies within a nation and between nations. But it does get one interested in learning more, so I guess from that perspective it is a success. It just means you've eaten a happy meal and now want a real dinner!

A brief and highly readable history of Lutheranism
By Charles S. Houser
Although this introduction to Lutheranism is getting close to twenty years old, it remains current and very informative (its focus being primarily historical). At half the price of Gritsch's more recent work on the subject, A History of Lutheranism "Second Edition", it covers all the important bases. The first half of the book deals with the history of Lutheranism, beginning with the Reformation and follows its various strands in Europe and America. I found the discussions of the roots of pietism especially helpful. Sketches of key figures (Luther himself, Zinzendorf, and Muhlenberg to name a few) keep the discussion lively. The second half of the book concisely summarizes Lutheran thinking on various matters and helps illuminate the things that make Lutheranism distinct from other Christian bodies that likewise have their origins in the Reformation. Appendix A, An Introduction to the Lutheran Confessions, is worth the price of the book. The book has many pictures and a bibliography, but lacks an index.

One of the seminal works on this Gospel.
By A Customer
There is no question that any scholar who wishes to understand the Gospel of John will have read this book. Dr. Culpepper provides a scaffolding whereby the reader can approach the literary context of the Gospel on any of its many levels. If I had to reccomend the essential Gospel of John library, and could only include four books, it would include this one (as well as C.H. Dodd's two books and R.E. Brown's commentary). Admittedly, I am biased. Dr. Culpepper is a friend. However, you can verify my words by checking the index of any commentary on John which was written after the publication of this book. Count how many time Dr. Culpepper is mentioned

The rich storytelling in John
By RevRev
I was introduced to this book soon after it was published. I return to it first whenever I find myself in a study of John. Culpepper brings a new depth to understanding John as literature. It was this book that helped me appreciate the literary depth of this gospel. Your appreciation of the details will be wonderfully expanded. Highly recommended.
(I came to this site in Amazon hoping to find the book to give to a pastor preaching through John. I was delighted to find it still in print.)

Anatomy of the Fourth Gospel
By Ryan Clark
There cannot be a more forensic study of the book of John than Culpepper's Anatomy of the Fourth Gospel. This scholarly book opens up the world of the Gospel of John like no other in the protestant world. This book should be mandatory reading for every Doctoral student in Biblical Studies (and probably master's as well).

Healing in the New Testament, by John J. Pilch

How are we to read and understand stories of Jesus healing the lame, deaf, blind, and those with a variety of other maladies? Pilch takes us beyond the historical and literary questions to examine the social questions of how the earliest followers of Jesus and ancient Judeans understood healing, what roles healers played, and the different emphases on healing among the gospels. In his comparative analysis, the author draws on the anthropology of the Mediterranean as well as the models employed by medical anthropologists to understand peasant societies and their health-care systems. Utilizes social-science models Features a complementary web- site with additional resources

Painfully mechanical application of a smattering of 20th century anthropology to 1st century Palestine and Jesus
By Cato Sapiens
To Pilch and other who march with him in the little known but highly influential "Context Group", anthropology provides a set of incredibly powerful (and almost infallible) tools for simply and easily "unlocking" the mysteries of the New Testament world. The result is an overly confident series of textbook like simplifications and rules: "all illnesses are always and infallibly healed, since all human beings ultimately find some meaning in a life-situation, including disvalued states," Pilch proclaims (p. 93)

If that kind of argument impresses you, then you've found your book. But actual anthropology is an empirical, not a deductive science, and Pilch seems to have missed that point altogether. Most of the theory here derives from the ground-breaking work of Arthur Kleinman (who is both an M.D. and a trained anthropologist) who began studying how different kinds of healers in Taiwan went about their crafts, how they interacted with patients, and what the results were. Kleinman's work (Patients and Healers in the Contexts of Culture) is enormously insightful, and is worth reading in its original form.

But Pilch seems fails to understand that Dr. Kleinman actually went into the field to study these healers first hand, and to attempt to measure the efficacy of a variety of non-western healing techniques. In describing his own work, Kleinman at one point (unfortunately) says, that there is a "dichotomy" between medical curing (according to Western standards--measurable change in structure/function) and the more holistic intent of non-Western "healing." (This is an oversimplification). But Pilch has taken this empirical observation made 30 years ago and built an astonishing edifice upon it, emptying Kleinman's work of its empirical intent and disregarding the very limited scope of Kleinman's one-culture, one-time period study. Whew!

The result is a series of grand, globalized statements and "laws" that appeal strongly to people who believe that uncovering "laws" in the social sciences makes intellectual life much simpler (which, I'm sure, it does.) But this all goes against the spirit of anthropological exploration. There are scores of medical anthropologists who do not treat their field data by imposing Dr. Kleinman's conceptual framework upon it...but you'll never know that by reading Pilch. Medical efficacy--which is exactly what Dr. Kleinman and his associates went to Taiwan to study--is merely a "cultural construct" Pilch proclaims.

But this puts Pilch in the position of having to imply that the lepers, the blind, and the lame of Jesus' time either couldn't tell the difference (or didn't care) whether they could see, walk, have physical relief from their very visible and frightening skin disorders. Pilch argues that since Jesus' real work involved integrating these outcasts into his new social network, they were (by definition, again) HEALED even if they still limped blindly with disfiguring skin conditions.

Hard to understand how this would cause Jesus' reputation as a great healer (which even his enemies acknowledged in their attacks on him) to spread like wildfire. As a historical explanation, it simply lacks credibility.

What Pilch has missed is that "western" medicine itself has changed enormously in its theoretical orientation since the mid-1970's when Kleinman's fateful "dichotomy" was "discovered." The emergence and growing robustness of the biopsychosocial models in medicine undermine the entire conceptual groundwork of Pilch's book because doctors know understand that there is an enormously dense two-way web between body and mind, and mind and community.

Unfortunately, New Testament scholars here, as elsewhere, have been far to eager to latch upon a handful of models in sociology and anthropology without ever interacting with (or acknowledging) the complexity and tenuousness of most models.

Last example: Pilch constantly referes to "Mediterranean anthropology" as though it were some unified, simplistic set of dictums rather than a mere hypothesis which has been challenged with increasing vigor for over twenty years.

Just because I know that a person is "Mediterranean", I do not necessarily know more about them than I did prior to applying the label. For the must erudite and amusing refutation of this kind of thinking, anthropologist Michael Herzfeld wrote a funny but serious article called "The Horns of the Medierraneanist Dilemma" in American Ethnologist back in the mid-1980's. (Lots of "horn/cornuto" in jokes for anthropologists.)

Bottom line: Those who really want the world to follow Aristotelian or Thomistic logic complete with syllogisms shouldn't be allowed to run with anthropological scissors in their hands. That's how people get hurt. (Fortunately, any such hurt can/is/always be ipso facto, q.e.d. healed...even if the patient bleeds to death.)

Ouch!

Could have been better.
By A Customer
Pilch's book uses medical/anthropological models to explore healing in the NT. Chapter three, which contrasts modern medicine with that of the first century, is excellent. However, the book is poorly edited and includes a great deal of redundancy (could have been 50 pages shorter). Pilch's dim view of Jesus as healer is unimaginative and uninspiring.

Must have
By sylantroadie
John Pilch does an extrodinary job of applying medical anthropology to healing in the New Testament world. Because a majority of the world experiences ecstatic phenomenon, Dr. Pilch has brought to light culturally sensitive descriptions otherwise overlooked by Western exegetes and lay people alike. It is an important book, leading one into the world of the 1st century.

From the Back Cover
Preeminent black social ethicist Peter Paris sharpens the Afrocentric quest. He focuses on African "spirituality" - the religious and moral values embodied in African experience and pervading traditional African religious worldviews. From extensive comparative research and personal travel, Paris shows how such values were retained and modified in the diaspora, most notably in African American religious and moral thought and practice. Traditional understandings of God, ancestral spirits, tribal community, family belonging, reciprocity, personal destiny and agency, he shows, have not only survived great cultural upheavals but remarkably even been enriched and enlivened. Paris's Pan-African focus, careful scholarship, and eye for ultimate values in varying cultural milieus combine here to model comparative cultural analysis and to clarify the cultural foundations of black ethical life.

African American Spirituality
By Robert W. Kellemen
Peter Paris has written a well-reasoned treatise exploring the relationship between African spirituality and African American spirituality. Whereas other writers see more discontinuity between the two, Paris perceives continuity of beliefs and practices between African religiosity and African American religiosity.

Reviewer: Robert W. Kellemen, Ph.D. is the author of "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction." He has also authored "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," "Martin Luther's Counseling," and "Biblical Psychology."

overall a good book. it makes you think. but its clear the authors are more objective than the editor, who seems to have a real axe to grind like the bible is secondard to her feminist podium. that's tiresome. also never heard of her. is she a scholar who doesnt publish or jsut waiting for the next feminist fad to happen? the quality is uneven i suspect it's a collection of her friends only. the carole meyers book on women in ancient israel is far superior and not ideologically angry.

Created in conjunction with an exhaustive critical commentary, this is the only English translation of 1 Enoch that takes into consideration all of the textual data now available in the Ethiopic version, the Greek texts, and the Dead Sea Aramaic fragments. Since only the first of two Hermeneia commentary volumes is now available, this book provides an indispensable translation of the whole work.

An invaluable work and a welcome addition to Biblical Studies
By Midwest Book Review
The collaborative effort of George W. E. Nickelsburg (Professor Emeritus, University of Iowa) and James C. VanderKam (John A. O'Brien Professor of Hebrew Scriptures, University of Notre Dame, Indiana), 1 Enoch: A New Translation is an invaluable work and a welcome addition to Biblical Studies. Based on the Hermeneia commentary, 1 Enoch is divided into five sections, followed by two brief appendices: The Book of the Watchers, The Book of Parables, The Book of the Luminaries, The Dream Visions, The Epistle of Enoch, The Birth of Noah, and Another Book by Enoch. Different sections portray the evolution of stages of Enochic tradition, which are linked by a common world view that considers the present world incurably corrupt and unjust, in need of divine judgment and renewal. Claiming to transmit divine revelation, as given to Enoch in primordial times and made public in the last days to perpetuate the community of the chosen, 1 Enoch is translated with every effort to present ancient writings as clearly and intelligibly to the reader as possible. Extensive footnotes, annotations and reference allow this complex script to be comprehensible to lay readers (with effort), and 1 Enoch: A New Translation is an enthusiastically recommended primary source for religious studies and reference shelves.

1 Enoch -- the authoritative translation
By Eibert Tigchelaar
There are several recent translations of 1 Enoch (or Ethiopic Enoch) in English, including those of Knibb (1978), Isaac (1983), Black (1985) and Olson (2004) [not to mention recent reprints of outdated nineteenth century translations by Dillmann, Laurence and Schodde, or that of Charles (1912, 2003)] but the present new translation by Nickelsburg and VanderKam is bound to be the authoritative one for decades to come. First, because they are the two major American specialists of 1 Enoch, both also involved in the Hermeneia commentary on 1 Enoch. Second, because their excellent translation with extensive footnotes is based upon textcritical analysis of the Ethiopic, as well as the Aramaic and Greek texts. Thirdly, because this edition is attractive, cheap and convenient. Whereas scholars may want to buy several translations, this is the best buy for students and all others interested in Early Judaism and New Testament backgrounds.

Most convenient scholarly translation
By JMS
The size of this translation makes it extremely handy for travel and quick reference. This is especially useful as it is the most up-to-date scholarly collation and translation of Enoch available in English. The only annoyance is the lack of reference available to the original languages which are translated; one is either refered to the first volume of the Hermeneia commentary, or has the wait on the forthcoming second volume. Overall, however, it is extremely useful for anyone working in Second Temple Judaism or Early Christianity.

a great general survey of a rarely discussed topic
By Jeremiah Lawson
The motif of Jesus' victory of the devil and demons is a theme that Garrett persuasively argues is underappreciated by scholars. She delves into the background of witchcraft and ancient Near Eastern thought about the devil inside and outside Judaism during the time of Christ. For a reader interested in biblical literature and wants a scholarly rather than just a pastoral approach to spiritual warfare as a motiff in biblical literature Garrett is the only author I've come across who covers the subject at all, as most Western scholars tend to ignore the subject of demonology in the New Testament or just defer to specialists of apocryphal literature. She wrote a book called The Temptation of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark that is also an interesting read on this subject as it appears in the other synoptic Gospel.

Religious Thought and the Modern Psychologies, by Don S. Browning

The first edition of this book pioneered a broader and deeper critique of psychological theories and practices. Informed by hermeneutical theory, Browning's widely acclaimed work drew attention to the ethical and even religious assumptions underlying psychology and has been deeply influential in psychology, pastoral counseling, and practical theology.

In this edition, Browning and his new co-author show how the field of social science has indeed grasped and appropriated the hermeneutical approach, though with only slight appreciation of the religious dimensions of the social-scientific endeavor. The new first chapter situates the discussion, and the core chapters of the book are updated. Two other new chapters include dialogue with psychotherapeutic theorists and evangelical writers on the relation of theology and psychology. This work will set the stage for the religion-psychology conversation for years to come.

A Classic in Theology and Psychology
By Thomas J. Oord
The purpose of the book, as the author puts it, is to "uncover the ethical and metaphysical horizon of some of the major contemporary psychotherapeutic psychologies" (ix). To do this, the author analyzes implicit principles of obligation and what the author calls "deep metaphors" imbedded in and around conceptualities of psychology. Browning's work in this book has been vital reading for those engaging in issues related to psychology and religion.

Presuppositions and resources in the Jewish and Christian religious traditions inform Browning's critique. Among the dominant psychologies that the author addresses are those of Freud, Jung, behavioral psychology, humanistic psychology, and Erickson. The dominant religious figures used to criticize and engage the psychologies include Reinhold Niebuhr, William James, and Paul Ricoeur.

The author believes that modern psychologies are indispensable for modern life and that they should be evaluated for the ways in which they play the role of religion in modern thinking. Clinical psychologies cannot avoid a metaphysical and ethical horizon. A major assumption made by the author is that "traditional religion and modern psychology stand in a special relation to one another because both of them provide concepts and technologies for the ordering of the interior life" (2).

The author labels various contemporary psychologies as "cultures." He associates Freud with, what he calls, "the culture of detachment"; the culture of detachment sees the world as basically hostile and humans are largely self-absorbed creatures with only small amounts of energy for larger altruistic ventures. Humanistic psychologies and Jung are variations of what he calls the "culture of joy"; the culture of joy sees the world as basically harmonious. Skinner is the example of the "culture of control"; the culture of control sees humans primarily as controlled and controllable by their environment. Erickson and Kohut are examples of the "culture of care;" the culture of care grasps the tensions and anxieties of life and gravitates toward an ethics that finds a place for both self-love and self-transcending love for the other.

Browning finds most affinities between Christian thought and the culture of care in the though of Erickson. "It is my thesis that significant portions of modern psychologies, and especially the clinical psychologies, are actually instances of religio-ethical thinking" (8). "It is not only in theology," claims Browning, "but, to a surprising extent, in the modern psychologies as well, that the way we metaphorically represent the world in its most durable and ultimate respects, influences what we think and what we think we are obligated to do" (20).

When addressing the Freudian-based modern psychologies, the author argues that psychoanalysis oscillates between ethical egoism and cautious reciprocity. By contrast, Christianity celebrates the principle of self-giving love and justice.

The critical chapter of the book comes in chapter 6, "Making Judgments about Deep Metaphors and Obligations." In it, Browning addresses the central or deep metaphor of Christianity, namely that the ideal of human fulfillment comes from the notion of self-sacrificial love as agape. Browning looks at the works of Anders Nygren, Reinhold Niebuhr and Gene Outka. Modern psychologies have put pressure on theology to build a greater place for self-regard into theology's model of human fulfillment. The caritas model found in the work of theologians such as Louis Janssens provide a model of agape that has a place for both self-sacrificial love and also the mutuality of neighbor-to-neighbor love. This model has the virtue also of incorporating insights on the importance of self-regard without overemphasizing self-regard to the detriment of equal regard for the other. It is this caritas model to which the modern psychologies of Erickson and Kohut come closest.

I highly recommend this book!

For intermediate to advanced psychology students
By Midwest Book Review
Now in an updated second edition, Religious Thought and the Modern Psychologies is a close study of how ethical and even religious assumptions have played a powerful underlying role in the formation of modern psychology - perhaps too powerful. Hermeneutical theory is applied in chapters discussing underpinnings of Freud, Skinner, Jung, aspects of Christian Anthropology, and much more. A scholarly text for intermediate to advanced psychology students, practitioners, theorists, and teachers, Religious Thought and the Modern Psychologies is an excellent resource and focus for discussion in the search to better understand the human mind, and the often fallible venues pursued to do so.

As someone self-trained in existential counseling, this book is a must. Understand your own philosophy and direction of thinking before starting existential counseling, sure, but also understand what philosophies you may be dealing with.

Abandon ethnocentricity, all ye who enter here!
By David Laufer
Editor Stegemann is to be commended for assembling a diverse and highly specialized field of writings into a survey which is about as cohesive as it can be given the few facts we have about Jesus and the vast body of Christian apologetics.
This book is a compilation of essays by contemporary academic writers each of whom take a very rigorous and detailed look at a different aspect of "the historical Jesus" and the origins of "the Jesus Movement". Bring your dictionary- this is not a casual read. And while the language sometimes seems almost showy in its complexit, a majority of the contributors present their ideas in an orderly fashion, and all have important conclusions.
What the editor sets out to do is ambitious: help the serious lay reader strip away the 21st century baggage we unwittingly bring to our reading of Jesus and his teachings. There are few conclusions here, and no proofs, but there are some wonderful insights.
The highly erudite approach to the material necessarily makes the treatment of Jesus seem a bit clinical. But I found it both informative and uplifting. This reader, at least, emerged from the labyrinth with the sense that Jesus-Messiah, avatar, healer, radical and yes, savior -survives the dissection and critique to be resurrected more provocative and inspiring than before.
Mr. Stegemann has done Christendom an important service by admitting the community of faith to the kind of discourse that undergirds the continuing Christian revolution.
I would give this book a fifth star if it had a glossary.

Excellent social-scientific intro to the NT
By David L Rattigan
This volume is one of the best academic introductions to social-scientific study of the New Testament available. Most key contemporary scholars in the field are represented, and the essays cover a wide range of issues related to the gospels, including miracles, exorcisms, honour/shame etc.

The Quest for the Historical Jesus on Steroids
By Dennis M. Swanson
Seeking to answer the question, "What can one, with the help of historically informed social-scientific models, know about the `historical' Jesus from the New Testament that cannot be know by other approaches?" (vii), this volume is the compilation of paper presented at the Fourth International Meeting of the Context Group in Tutzing, Germany in 1999.

This group is dedicated to interpreting the New Testament by means of historiography, utilizing social science research, once of course after they find a "suitable model" (p. 3) to facilitate such research. This group advocates a minimalist to radical minimalist approach to the text of Scripture. In fact their view of Scripture is simply assumed and never defended, the idea of an inspired and inerrant text from which propositional truth derived would be considered nonsensical. In fact this reviewer could not find a single instance where the word Scripture was even used and there is no mention of inspiration at any level.

This reviewer was struck at the beginning of the book by two things: (1) the distain for any approach to New Testament studies that affirms absolutes in terms of theological truth; and (2) the acrimony towards those who disagree with their affirmations. Once such example should suffice where Malina states:

For the most part, social-scientific research in New Testament studies has been concerned with interpreting written documents, not with the general storytelling of historians. In other words, its concerns have been exegetical, not historiographical . . . This is perhaps why, so far, there has been no "life" of the historical Jesus based on social-scientific interpretations . . .Nonetheless, what has been done with the social sciences is significant, much of it important enough to be plagiarized by John Dominic Crossan (4).

This is a technical work, not for the faint of heart. The authors assume conversance with various social-science constructs and they make no effort to explain their models at all, except as over against why their selected model is chosen over another competing model (p. 15). There is a great deal technical jargon from the social science, such as the so-called "forming" "storming" "norming" "performing" and "adjourning" phases of small group development that the authors ascribe to the ministry of Jesus (pp. 11-15). One author speaks of the "public self" the "private self" and the "in-group self" of Jesus (38) and states that if Jesus did think that He was the Messiah no one would have heard about it in His lifetime because to assert such "private self" beliefs would be a shameful practice (39).

Other chapters discuss "Jesus as Fatherless Child" (65-84); discusses Jesus' baptism by John and His walking on water in terms of "altered states of consciousness" models (108-111); demon possession is described as a "socially accepted way to deal with tensions, because it allowed those possessed to do and say what they could not do or say as a sane person (165). There is a chapter entitled "The Jesus Movement and Network Analysis" (301-32) where the travels of Jesus and His disciples are evaluated in terms of an "ego-centered network" (325).

All of this is simply what we might call the "Quest for the Historical Jesus" on steroids. It is the full-scale abandonment of the text of Scripture as inspired and historical-grammatical hermeneutics as a viable methodology for interpreting and understanding the text. Paul's warning that in the last days there would be those who are "always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth" (2 Tim 3:7) is the best summation possible for this thoroughly useless book.

Excellent Resource Tool
By Michael C. Boling
When we read Scripture, an important element of engaging the word of God includes the historical context of the events recorded in its pages. This includes matters of history, geography, culture, political structures, religious beliefs, and philosophical constructs. This involves a bit more than referring to the maps in the back of your Bible. While useful for identifying locations of cities mentioned for instance in the book of Acts, there is the added necessity to dig deeper in order to understand for instance why Paul chose to go to the Areopagus in Athens or how the influence of Greek thought on the known world called Hellenization had an impact even on Jewish perceptions of the day. Louis Feldman and Meyer Reinhold have provided a collection of primary readings in this book Jewish Life and Thought Among Greeks and Romans that will assist the diligent student of Scripture.

As noted in the preface, the authors endeavor to “present representative selections from Greek and Latin literature, the Apocrypha, the New Testament, Dead Sea Scrolls, Graeco-Jewish writers (notably Philo and Josephus), Roman imperial legislation, the rabbinic corpus, inscriptions, papyri, and coins.” Furthermore, their effort at providing such a compendium of works is to “illustrate the political (with special attention to the revolts against Rome), religious (with special attention given to the various movements within Judaism and the degree of Hellenization), economic, social, and cultural life of the Jews in both Palestine and the various countries of the Diaspora for the period of approximately a thousand years from the time of Alexander the Great in the fourth century BCE to the sixth century BCE.” The greatest focus of this collection of readings is on how the Jewish people during this period related on all of the aforementioned areas with the Greeks and Romans that so greatly shaped the world at that time.

Being able to access and assess primary source readings for instance on who the “God-Fearers” were helps the reader understand who these individuals were and why individuals such as Cornelius practiced certain Jewish oriented religious observances. Feldman and Reinhold share a notation from Josephus about the “God-Fearers” that mentions “The masses have long since shown a keen desire to adopt out religious observances; and there is not one city, Greek or barbarian, nor a single nation, to which our custom of abstaining from work on the seventh day has not spread, and where the fasts and the lighting of lamps and many of our prohibitions in the matter of food are not observed.” This reveals that while the Jews were being influenced by the Greeks and Romans, the customs and religious practices of the Jews were also a source of influence to those same nations. Thus, having an understanding from a primary source perspective helps to better understand the “God-fearers” and why God chose to send Peter to Cornelius. Furthermore, these multifarious primary source readings and inscriptions from this period serve to affirm the biblical record and its historical veracity.

Also of interest is the section that discusses the life and times of Herod, a truly influential figure during the time of Jesus. The historical accounts provided by Feldman and Reinhold shine an interesting light into who Herod was, the influence he had on certain segments of Jewish society and why he had such influence, his relationship with the Romans, and his seeming obsession with rooting out plots against his life and authority. Interestingly, as noted by Josephus in Jewish Antiquities 16.60-1 and shared by Feldman and Reinhold, “Herod’s close connections with influential circles in Rome (notably Antony, Augustus, and the general Agrippa) were highly useful to the Jews of the Diaspora. Indeed, he turned out to be a champion of those Jews, as we see in the case of the Jews of Asia Minor, who had been prevented by the non-Jewish inhabitants from observing their ancestral customs.” So while Herod was certainly a rather vile character, he was nevertheless mindful of taking care of some segments of the Jewish population, even though his reasons were likely to continue his base of power.

One final aspect of this book that is of note is the discussion of the Messianic expectation that is found not only in the biblical corpus, but also in numerous other writings of this period. It was long anticipated that an anointed one (a Messiah) would come who as prophesied long ago, would come from the house of David to assume King David’s throne. In the Pseudepigraphal writing known as Psalms of Solomon, it was noted this Messiah would come to defeat the enemies of the Jews, restoring Jerusalem in the process. This concept is also found in other writings such as 1 Enoch and the Manual of Discipline which was an important set of writings for the Essene community. Thus, being able to dissect the writings of the time period, one is better able to more fully grasp the messianic fervor that was building prior to and during the time of Christ, a fervor that expected something different to take place than what Christ had actually come to earth to accomplish.

Jewish Life and Thought Among Greeks and Romans is a truly valuable compendium of primary source readings that will greatly assist the reader in having a more developed and holistic understanding of the period. It is a highly scholarly work that is nonetheless very accessible to all believers who desire to better understand the influence of the Greek and Romans and for that matter, the influence of the Jews on the same. I will certainly refer to this volume for many years to come in my personal studies of history and Scripture, and I highly recommend this as a resource tool.

I received this book for free from Fortress Press for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”
