In this work, Riley (New Testament, Claremont Sch. of Theology) carries forward the impetus of his previous work in demonstrating the diversity of beliefs by early Christians as exemplified in the writings of Thomas and John. The thesis of the present work is that the compelling center and consensus of early Christian belief about Jesus lay not so much in agreement about any particular belief regarding Jesus' ethnic or ontological origins (his Jewishness or divinity), nor even in any shared view that might require assent to a doctrinal commitment. Rather, what made Christianity so resilient was the commitment of its adherents to the notion that "Jesus was their hero." Riley explicates the notion of Jesus as hero on the basis of literary analogies drawn from the role of other heroes in different stories of (mainly Greek) antiquity. This well-argued work is richly illustrated with literary connections between biblical and Greek portrayals of heroic traits and makes what will probably prove to be a significant contribution to the quest for an explanation of the rise of early Christian notions of Jesus. An insightful portrayal of Jesus as a classical hero-martyr, by New Testament scholar Riley (School of Theology, Claremont). The first half of the book is a quick romp through Greco-Roman heroic literature, but with a point: Riley argues that Jesus had a lot in common with familiar figures like Hercules and Achilles. The classical heroes claimed a mix of divine-human parentage, usually with a virgin human mother and a god for a father; they possessed some remarkable or even miraculous skill; they had divine enemies and were hated by powerful humans; they died, often young and violently, as martyrs for a principle; and their deaths powerfully transformed other people's lives through emulation. Jesus fits the bill perfectly, Riley argues, because the Gospel writers had obtained a classical education, which meant that they were thoroughly steeped in heroic lore. Early converts readily embraced Christianity's message, despite tremendous penalty from a hostile Roman government, because it captured the heroic formula that peasants had heard recited and then memorized. The second half of the book drives home this point about the source of Christianity's popularity. Riley demonstrates that it certainly wasn't doctrine that attracted the masses, since the earliest apostles couldn't agree on the most basic tenets of the faith. Dozens of sects arose in different cities, all claiming to be the religion of the risen Christ (though whether he had risen in spirit or body was itself a subject of heated debate). What they could agree on was that Jesus was a hero and that they, as martyrs for the faith, could become heroes themselves. Such faithfulness constituted the religion of Christ into the fourth century, which witnessed the conversion of Constantine and the great creedal controversies. A broad comparison of Jesus Christ with Graeco-Roman heroes

Gregory Riley's contribution to the growing debate about one way to God or many ways to God demonstrates that the paradigms which the New Testament writers drew upon as they wrote about Jesus of Nazareth trace some of their origins to the heroes of the Graeco-Roman world. Though the overall approach of the book does not seem to me to describe "many Christs", "Christ" being the technical word for "anointed one" or "messiah", he makes it very plain that in Jesus of Nazareth we find a historical figure who commanded the respect, adoration, and the desire by many to emulate Jesus as a heroic figure and define their own understanding of true heroism in indvidual Christians. This desire has produced a living movement, the church, and its core beliefs, which have given deep meaning to the struggles of life, suffering, death, and life after death.

Jesus Wins in the End

Professor Gregory Riley's "One Jesus, Many Christs" (2001, 228 paperback) attempts to presents a first century classical view of Jesus of Nazareth. The book's scholarship is apparent and well documented with the helpful in-the-text style referencing.

Riley basic premise is that the world of late antiquity (roughly Jesus' era) was replete with heroes and "Christs" ("Messiah's" for Jews). He presents a fascinating study of ancient world heroes.

He compares Jesus to Achilles, parallels Hesiod's narrative with the Nazarene's, equates Oedipus to Job, introduces Elysium (similar to the Testamental "Heaven") as the post life heroic abode, and compares Jesus' movement to the Greeks' adoration for the god Asclepius. In the end, the Jesus movement wins.

Hercules' and Hermes' origins in Grecian schools of thought are thoroughly explained. From this background Riley suggests Jesus as a "classical hero" with "cosmic destiny" (page 81). One wonders why the Hebrew concept of "Messiah" is not also considered?

Riley offers plenty of fuel for thought: God's destruction of Palestine (presumably by the Romans of AD 70) is the result of divine revenge for killing Jesus and the martyrs (page 86), Jesus' passion and trial show his character (page 87), and early Christianity's most radical, and unique, claim was the eternal promise for everyone, not just heroes (page 93).

Although Riley quotes the Bible extensively (with a 2-page "Biblical Citations" index) the book reads like an ancient Greek world primer. The book is interesting and helpful, but it fails to fulfill the expectation presented by its title. (A better title might be: "Jesus and the Greeks" or "Jesus as Olympian".) This text needs less Grecian recovery and more New Testament discovery.

This book is recommended to all students of ancient Greece, mythology buffs, classical scholars, and those already biblically well read.

Strong argument for Christian diversity

The Kirkus review above gives a good description of the book. The author, Gregory Riley, is a professor at Claremont College in California. He provides a good history of Greek and Jewish legends, along with the details of how they could have affected early Christian writers. He also shows the development of dualistic and Hellenistic beliefs (body-soul and God-Satan) in the late Old Testament and New Testament writers. I would also mention Riley's emphasis on the diversity of early Christianity (which was lost for the most part in the 4th Century when Constantine took over the church and imposed uniformity, and which was regained again in the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century). What Riley might have ignored is the intense, often bloody rivalries between Christian sects, then and now. As Garry Wills mentions in "Papal Sin," there is evidence that Peter and Paul were fingered by a rival Christian group as instigators of the burning of Rome, resulting in their execution. Christians--and members of all religions--will find diversity and harmony difficult as long as they are committed to the idea of absolute truth.

Gaining different perspectives

I am not African American; however I like to understand different perspectives when I read scripture. This book was written by excellent and balanced scholars who have an understandable and enriching perspective on the Old Testament. Gathering the way different groups of people hear the same scripture due to life and cultural experiences broadens the way you hear the Word of God. This is an excellent and very enjoyable book to use. I especially recommend the Exodus entry.

The book is refreshing in its ability to relate the Biblical scriptures to people of African descent. Having a vast viewpoint from various authors as they make their relationship to the scripture present provides an ability to reanalyze formerly held beliefs. Very Good guide to Protestant subjects in the Church Year

There are two things about which you must be clear of with this book. The first is that it's heritage is thoroughly Lutheran, so you will find many references to Protestant figures wuch as the Wesley brothers, Philipp Melanchthon,William Tyndale, and Count Zinzendorf, as well as the 'biggies', Luther and Calvin. The second is that contrary to the subtitle, this book does not contain an exhaustive list of 'Saints' recognized by the Catholics. For that, I suggest you go to David Farmer's 'Oxford Dictionary of Saints'.

Otherwise, as someone who writes regularly on the Christian year and on Christian subjects, this book has found a place of honor, within easy arms reach of my keyboard, as I refer to it every week. I suspect the book is even more useful to those who have responsibilities for weekly messages, as this volume gives a wealth of information about most of its figures, many of which neither the average Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist, or even Catholic has ever heard of, but should.

For the short run, there is a brief biography for most figures, about what you may find in an entry in the Wikipedia (except for the really important figures). But even better, there are quotes from books either by or about each figure.

For the long haul, there are bibliographical references, with at least two or three volumes cited for biographies or, for thinkers such as Kierkegaard, references on his work. There are Propers for the service and even suggestions for hymns, readings, and prayers appropriate to the subject. Almost all hymns appear in either the Lutheran Book of Worship or Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

I have seen other books on the Christian calendar, but this is by far the most useful for Protestants.

What a wonderful resource

This a new, thoroughly revised, and greatly improved version of an earlier book of festivals and commemorations that Philip Pfatteicher composed a generation ago (published 1980). This is an invaluable resource of patristic depth and ecumenical breadth, a "contribution toward a proposed common calendar for the major Western Christian traditions." Pfatteicher bases his work on current and past calendars from the Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anglican and Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Methodist traditions. As he writes in the Preface: "Such a common calendar can serve as a further means of binding Christians closer to one another in the communion of saints by enhancing the memory of the rich history of the church." (Pfatteicher himself is a Lutheran, a tradition historically suspicious of designating particular individuals to be "saints" over others who are baptized followers of Christ.)

I am learning a great deal about church history and followers of Christ I have never heard of. More importantly, as I use this book from day to day, I am sustained in my own journey of faith and in my prayer life: in all ages and in all circumstances, faithful men and women have experienced joys and trials more extreme than what I face. Their examples enable me to get beyond my own day-to-day concerns in my work and life, and my concerns about the state of the churches. Nothing that we are facing today is new! There is grace in that.

"The calendar of commemorations is a kind of genealogical exploration of one's spiritual ancestors. It is a way of encouraging people to examine the personal stories of certain representative women and men to learn of the richness and the potential of human life lived by the grace of God in Jesus Christ. A study of the calendar is thus at once a course in theology, spirituality, prayer, church history, and sometimes secular history as well.

"A calendar of commemorations can convey something of the breadth of Christian history and provide a richly assorted variety of the young and old, learned and untutored, people of action and contemplatives, whose common denominator is simply that the grace of God worked mightily within them...."

Do not be deterred by the price of this book. It features excellent binding, and high-quality paper. The book is sewn in an old-fashioned way, so that it lies flat.

About the Author
Jurgen Moltmann is Professor Emeritus of Theology at the University of Tubingen in Germany, and one of the most prominent and revered scholars in contemporary Christian theology. From 1963 to 1983, he was a member of the Faith and Order Committee of the World Council of Churches. He is the author of numerous influential books, including "The Theology of Hope", "The Crucified God", "The Way of Jesus Christ", "The Spirit of Life", and "The Coming of God", for which he was awarded the prestigious Grawemeyer Award in Religion in 2000.

A very dense read... but worth the time

"Christian eschatology has nothing to do with apocalyptic `final solutions' ...[o]n the contrary, what it is about is the new creation of all things" (Moltmann 1996, xi). So begins Moltmann's book immediately in the preface explaining the purpose of the book: this book is not about the popular notion of eschatology defined as the last things: rather, the author views the `end' as the beginning. Moltmann defines Christian eschatology under for `horizons:'
1. It is hope in God for God's glory.
2. It is hope in God for the new creation of the world.
3. It is hope in God for the history of human beings with the earth.
4. It is the hope in God for the resurrection and eternal life of human people. (Moltmann 1996, xvi).

The book is breathtaking in scope: Moltmann engages many different areas of study throughout the book, interacting primarily with theology, but often touching on history, philosophy, science, and sociology. He is clearly interested in engaging people and ideas from the ground up: hardly a chapter or section of the book is just him expounding on what he will; it's always in response to or interaction with. There are five chapters in the book looking at eschatology from five different viewpoints: eschatology today, and then personal, historical, cosmic, and divine eschatology.
The first chapter discusses eschatology today, and really is a survey meant to show what past and present thinkers have written in regards to how they view the topic. Such authors as Albert Schweitzer, Karl Barth, Rudolf Bultmann, Franz Rosenzweig and Walter Benjamin are discussed and evaluated. Ultimately, Moltmann sees the "eschaton [as] neither the future of time nor timeless eternity. It is God's coming and his arrival" (Moltmann 1996, 22). This is to say that God is continually coming into his creation: it's not a matter of some set future time when he will `return.'
In chapter two, Moltmann looks at personal eschatology, looking at such subjects as Life and Death (49ff), Immorality of the Soul or Resurrection of the Body (58ff), Death as the Consequence of Sin or Life's Natural End (77ff), and finally the question of Where are the Dead (96ff)? Having wrapped all of these things together, Moltmann concludes that "[t]he crucified Christ consoles us by bringing the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit into the abysses of our suffering and the hell of our lostness...so we can believe in victory of life over death (cf John 19.9)" (Moltmann 1996, 127).

Chapter three looks at the historical concepts of eschatology and covers everything from political eschatology (131ff) to `Christ's descent into hell and the restoration of all things' (250ff). Moltmann concludes having looked at the historical perspectives that "[t]he eschatological doctrine about the restoration of all things has these two sides: God's Judgment, which puts things right, and God's kingdom, which awakens new life" (Moltmann 1996, 255).

Chapter four examines cosmic eschatology and looks at the questions of what will happen to creation. Is all of creation bound to be completely destroyed, or is the idea more that everything will be restored and made fresh? Again, many different movements are looked at and discussed, with Moltmann ultimately discussing the earth as the dwelling place of heaven (Rev. 22), and "[t]he presence of the divine life becomes the inexhaustible source of creaturely life, which thereby becomes the life that is eternal" (Moltmann 1996, 319).

Finally in chapter five, Moltmann evaluates divine eschatology in looking at the very character of God in self-glorification and realization, as well as God's interaction with humanity and the fullness of God in eternal joy. The book concludes with a three words summary: Soli Deo Gloria (to God alone be the glory).
As the title for my review states, this is a very dense read and will take a while to comprehend: this is not just a light, energetic read. However, this book flips much of popular Christian Eschatalogical presuppositions on it's head, and is well worth the read.

Recapturing the Broken Spirit

For over twenty years I have worked diligently to interpret the Christian Concept of Eschatology for those seeking to grasp its basic concepts as they relate to Biblical scholarship. Finally, a theologian of considerable importance in the academic world has broken through the cultural baggage that characterizes so much of today's religious understanding and clearly presented a forceful, scholarly and readable presentation of what many have mistakenly refered to as, "The Second Coming." Moltmann is at his best when he offers reflections on death, dying and grief. Had this book been marketed more effectively, He would have emerged as the premire commentator on the death experience and our response to it. I honestly believe that my reading of this particular book as it relates to this subject was one of those discoveries that makes for surprise and joy.
It must also be noted that this book is not for the fundamentalist oriented unless they are willing to suffer some major challenges to their thought, for Moltmann sits clearly within the European tradition and quotes significantly from the likes of Bloch, Rosenzweig and Luther.
He is no stranger to eclectic thought and does a superb job of reminding Americans who carefully consider at his thought how shallow American Theology can be if it does not take into account centuries of reflection from nations whose cultural experiences and political history are different.
All that aside, if you are a working Pastor or young theologian or seminarian, or a Lay person seeking some exposure to serious theological thought this book is for you. If you are not well versed in theological thought and religious philosophy, look elswhere for nourishment.
A personal note, if there has been a presentation of Biblical interpretation for the mid-life blues that so many Pastors, teachers and others experience, this book goes a long way towards renewing and restoring the spirit. But, keep in mind you need to read slowly, carefully and with a passion for expanding the mind.

Gearing up for the 21st century

This book by Prof. Moltmann is timely as it is important. Prof. Moltmann was one of the major theological voices that rescued the eschatological perpspective of the Scriptures. As a consequence the renewed sense of hope for the individual and the world despite the terrors and tragedies of history has found expression in political and liberation theologies. This work by Moltamnn serves as a superb recapitualtion of the themes he has worked out in his theological enterprise beginning with, A Theology of Hope. He has kept alive the Pauline vision of universal cosmic transfiguration so that nothing for the good is wasted in this world despite its incompletness. This is a work that reminds Christians that we are still on the way working with the Lord and others in the transforming mission of the Lord prefigured in the resurrection and completed in the Parousia. Such a theology reminds us not to despair, God is here and is Coming!

God as Wife Abuser

Battered Love is about how the Hebrew Bible prophets portrayed the relationship between Israel and God. Many times the metaphor of God as husband and Israel as wife was used.
Weems points out in a fascinating study, that God was often portrayed as setting up all the rules and that strict obediance of the rules was necessary for people of Israel, the subordinate partner in the divine/human relationship. If the Israelites disobeyed the rules, then God was permitted to beat up Israel. If Israel later returned to God, then God would love Israel again.
Renita Weems explains how a metaphor works and how metaphors are used by people. Furthermore she explains quite lucidly that for many people the human husband represented God, and the wife represented the subordinate partner. Therefore, husbands throughout the centuries have believed that they have permission to beat up their disobedient wives. Renita Weems especially looks at the prophets Ezekiel, Hosea, and Jeremiah to prove her case.

Good General Information

Even if you have no real interest in women in the Bible this book is beneficial. Weems aptly explains the use of metaphor in scripture with regard to textual interpretation. If I have a small criticism it is that she over-explains just a little bit, but her writing here is applicable to many scriptural texts as a basis for understanding context. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in better understanding the Bible as a whole.

If you are particularly interested in women in the Bible you will find this book fascinating. If you enjoy studying prophecy you will find this book insightful. It's an easy read - it won't take much of your time to read it, and the benefit is well worth it.

The Prophets and the use of women

Dr. Renita Weems, always tells it like it is...No one ever ask women how they understand the Bible with all of its violence directed at women, how we look to the Father on one hand, and live under the rulership of men on the other. Dr. Weems does a excellent job of explaining Bibilical metophors and how the Prophets used women's issue to "shock" men into reality, but also at the same time it caused men to see woman as a devious and worthless, which allowed them justification to do whatever with us and to us. This book should be required reading for every woman who attends any church!
