Exhaustive, Remarkable, and Controversial

This book is not is a history of the development of Judaism from 537 BCE to 70 CE. And, it is also not a history of the second Judean state. It will inform the reader about both these broad topics only as collateral matter pertaining to its main concern which is the high priests of the second temple in Jerusalem. Therefore, this book is definitely not a starting point for students interested in second temple Judaism. I believe to get the most out of this book a reader should come equipped with an in depth knowledge of the topics described above as well as a substantial grasp of the history of the ancient near east. With this in mind, a reader possessed of the above prerequisites will find this book an extremely challenging explication of almost all the material available on the topic as of its date of publication. Vanderkam nearly exhausts every known source on the high priests of the second temple, and his meticulous presentation of this material will be invaluable to any serious researcher in the area. The bibliography at least contains the name of almost every modern scholar who has written on second temple Judaism in English, German, and Hebrew, and the author is fully engaged with their scholarship throughout this work. The ancient sources and their languages are handled with expertise including the Tannaitic and Rabbinic literature.

This is a dense work by a mature scholar who displays an easy grasp of the subject material under discussion. The organization is chronological and is sensibly broken up into five chapters. The first of which is actually an introduction followed by chapters on the Persian period, the early Hellenistic period, the Hasmonean period, and finally the Herodian Age. After the introductory material, each chapter averages well over one hundred pages and is heavily footnoted. The footnotes are extensive and contain important information that demands hours of attention if one is to fully appreciate the text. Every imaginable scholarly interpretation of the sources is considered. And, seeing that the sources themselves are often contradictory and obscure definitive interpretations are sometimes difficult to arrive at and justify. Lengthy excursuses on both sides of contentious points are provided with the author often supporting minority interpretations. Where Vanderkam deems no definitive answers available or worthy of support, ambiguity results. For example, do not expect any startling observations on the import of the Dead Sea Scrolls regarding the high priests. The author finds suggestive references pertaining to certain high priests in the DSS who served circa 154 BCE and 76 BCE. You, the reader, will often be left to reflect on conflicting interpretations parsed very finely.

A controlling concern in this work is the apportionment of power between the high priests and secular authorities. In the Persian period the author finds the power of the high priest far greater than in the pre-exilic monarchies. However, he does find a continuous civil authority of some significance vested in governors answerable to the Persian Empire. In the early Hellenistic period, Vanderkam finds the high priests at the zenith of their powers with Judea a virtual theocracy, and the high priests directly answerable only to either their Seleucid or Ptolemaic overlords. With the advent of the Hasmoneans, the priestly and civil power becomes co-joined with ultimately disastrous results. The Herodian period marks the nadir of high priestly power. The high priests were reduced to political appointees who were only able to exert limited control even of the temple cult. There are of course somewhat different interpretations of these matters that have been argued by other scholars. However, any future work on second temple Judaism will have to carefully take Vanderkam's reading of this material into account. Regardless of the level of agreement with the author's conclusions an informed reader may find, they should most certainly be awed by the sheer magnitude of this undertaking and the exemplary erudition displayed by Vanderkam. This is a major reference work which is absolutely mandatory reading for all advanced students of second temple Judaism.

Better organization for Josephus' account

Prof Van DerKam's work is an excellently organized track of the (largely Josephus') chronology of post-Exilic Jewish High Priests. Where there are other sources, such as the Acts of the Apostles, we may need to examine our assumptions however.
I was struck that Phineas, the last recorded high priest selected by "lot" (or "elected?) was "naught but a stonecutter" installed by the Zealots.

Painter (theology, St. Mark's Theological Centre, Canberra, Australia) has taken on the same task here as Robert Eisenman in his James, the Brother of Jesus: The Key to Unlocking the Secrets of Early Christianity and the Dead Sea Scrolls (LJ 1/97): to rescue James the Just from the obscurity that history forced on him. For both authors, the stream of early Christianity that became orthodoxy suppressed the true importance of James. Painter sees traditions outside of and later than the New Testament (Eusebius and Gnostic and apocryphal writings) as providing a corrective and thus reads the gospels, Acts, and epistles in light of them. However, he does not appeal to the Dead Sea Scrolls. In fact, he takes issue with Eisenman's identification of James with the scrolls' Teacher of Righteousness (and Paul the Apostle with "the spouter of lies"). Painter may find more readers agreeing with him than does Eisenman, because he doesn't stretch the imagination quite so far, but not all will want to stretch even this far. Lacking the passion of Eisenman's, this work is more appropriate for acadmic collections.?Craig W. Beard, Univ. of Alabama at Birmingham Lib.

Restored Portrait of an Early Christian Leader

James "the Just", "the brother of the Lord", is remembered in Christian tradition as the first bishop of Jerusalem and the author of a canonical epistle. In the Orthodox Church, his feast day is marked by a special liturgy, celebrated on no other occasion. In short, he holds a place as a Great Man in the early Church. Nevertheless, his theoretical greatness is coupled with practical obscurity. Next to the towering figures of Peter and Paul, James is a shadowy presence. Even the one writing attributed to him, a high point of "Wisdom literature", has suffered neglect, burdened by Martin Luther's contemptuous dismissal of its contents as "straw".
John Painter seeks to restore the portrait of "Just James" to its original brilliance. He considers every ancient text that bears on James: the handful of references in the New Testament, the short but significant testimony of Josephus, the thin line of orthodox remembrance and the much more abundant Gnostic and heretical appropriation of James' image. The available information about James has never before been so carefully and thoroughly assembled. Sadly, though, the pigments on the canvas remain scattered and faded, so that the Painterly picture has in it, in the end, more of the artist than the subject.
On some elements of James' life, Professor Painter is fresh and convincing. He demonstrates the weakness of the evidence underlying the conventional opinions that James and the other "brothers of the Lord" converted to belief in Jesus only after His death and that James did not become the "leader" (whatever leadership may signify at that point in Christian history) of the Jerusalem church until Peter departed from the city. He also offers a clear treatment of the early controversy over mission strategies, though his symmetrical schema of six "positions" in the debate over preaching to non-Jews may be too abstract and tidy to reflect reality.
On the other hand, his discussion of other topics is less satisfactory. On the degree of kinship between Jesus and James, he presents the standard arguments against Jerome's hypothesis (that the two were cousins) but rejects the traditional view of the Eastern Church (that they were half-brothers) without grappling with it. His argument is half well-poisoning (guilt by association with the often-preposterous Protevangelium of James) and half literalism ("adelphos" means "brother", and that's that, as if there were any other natural Greek word to use for a brother by only one parent).
Even worse is his analysis of the motives that led the Jerusalem authorities to put James to death in 62 A.D., an action that the non-Christian Josephus characterizes as a judicial murder. The natural assumption, unanimously supported by Christian accounts, is that James was martyred for professing Christ. Professor Painter, on virtually no evidence, prefers to believe that James was closely associated with economically distressed Temple priests of pharisaic tendencies and was executed for his advocacy of their interests. Such a socioeconomic interpretation may resonate today, but one wonders how James and his small congregation could have genuinely threatened the political power of the High Priesthood and whether Professor Painter is right to presume that Pharisees would not have objected to injustice against someone who was not of their own faction.
Questionable points like these do not, however, undermine the value of this scholarly labor. The limitations of the surviving sources necessarily make the history of early Christianity largely a study of two apostles (or of one and a half, since Pauline material is so much more abundant than Petrine). An effort to fill in some of the rest of the picture is welcome.

For those interested in James the Just

Bottom line up front, this is a scholarly work which is more appropriate for theologians, clergy or teachers of early Christian history. General audiences will find this a difficult book to read. I read this book because of my interest in early church history, and my desire to read a more scholarly work after having read some trash histories regarding James the bother of Jesus. This book is not hot off the press being published in 1997, but at this point, it would be read by those interested in the character of James the Just and his place in Biblical history.

Painter's approach for this book is to review the inventory of early literary sources or Biblical references which discuss or mention James the brother of Jesus. Part one, discusses the Biblical references in the Gospels, Acts, and the letters of Paul. This biblical review includes family Jesus, James as a foundational leader in the early church, and the tension between Jewish Christianity and the Apostle Paul's mission to the Gentiles. Part two continues with the images of James as remembered by the early Christian Church by reviewing the histories by early writers such as Eusebus, Hegesippus, and Josephus. This portion also included a review of the sources from the Nag Hammadi Library and the Gnostic movement. Part three concerns James and Jewish Christianity with Painter's review of the Epistle of James. Finally, Painter includes an excursus where he reviews of Robert Eisenman's, James the Brother of Jesus. In this review, Painter accurately dismisses Eisenman's theory that James led the followers of the Qumran community as the Righteous Teacher while serving as the head of the early church in Jerusalem.

Overall, Painter quickly establishes James as one of the leader s of church following the crucifixion, resurrection and assent ion of Jesus. Part two of the book provides insight to how competing groups used the memory or tradition of James the Just for their own purposes such as the Gnostics remembering James as receiving secret knowledge from his brother Jesus. However, I found the review of biblical references more interesting, while the thorough examination of the many later literary sources is lengthy, while leaving the reader wondering why am I reading this? Fortunately Painter provides a very good summary at the end of part three with the sub-title `Just James.' This conclusion provides Painter's complete picture of James the brother of Jesus and why we should care to read his book.

James followed Jesus as the leader of the first generation of Jewish Christians. He served in this role as the first bishop of the Jerusalem church. The Jerusalem church believed Jesus to be the Messiah and believed that their movement called their Jewish followers to a higher standard faithfulness to God within the traditions and history of Judaism. Peter a disciple of Jesus and Paul who became an early convert were among the first generation of early followers. Painter discusses a possible rivalry between the apostolic movement led by Peter and the Jerusalem church led by James. I am not totally convinced of the image Painter creates for Peter. His image of Peter has little variance from the Jewish Christianity of James. Painter overlooks some of Peter's apparent inconsistencies in regards to eating with Gentiles as reported in the Book of Acts, or Paul's outrage with Peter's later insistence on requiring circumcision for Gentles. I believe the positions of both James and Peter evolved over time, but Painter creates images of these men with positions regarding religious practices as solidified.
Every book concerning James must address the controversy between him and the Apostle Paul. James led the Jerusalem church by remaining firmly within Jewish history and tradition. Paul led the mission to the Gentiles. Painter states that Paul was driven by the questions, "Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentles also? Paul asserts that affliction and glory come equally to the Jew and also to the Greek. Both are justified by their faith. Paul's mission to the Gentiles would eventually win over the Roman Empire. James was bound to the fate of the Jewish people. He would die as a martyr several years prior to the destruction of Jerusalem, which marked an end to the center of Jewish religious and cultural activities. Jewish Christianity faded away and James the brother of Jesus became a footnote in Biblical history.

Regression

John Painter constantly finds in Scripture incidents that are easily overlooked by most. He handles the exegesis of most difficult passages with ease, but at times he incorrectly grasps the theological meaning, or purposefully detracts from Scripture, as do most form critical authors, who struggle with the authoritative nature and origin of Scripture.

A good example: in referring to Paul's return to Jerusalem, he actually argues that the Jerusalem elders, James included, deliberately planned to have Paul arrested and handed over to the authorities, which caused his finally being taken to Rome. To me it would seem he hereby makes the apostles and elders at Jerusalem complicit in Paul's demise. This is over-reaching the text and this inventiveness does not behoove the inerrancy of Scripture. He does suggest that the evidence does not lean towards this, but just the fact that he suggests it, left a sour taste in my mouth.

'James, centered in Jerusalem with a focus on the mission to the Jews, had every right to think that his approach to mission was true to the mission of Jesus and that the mission of Paul was without adequate precedent in the practice of Jesus.' p 98 Further, it would seem that as James was not present at the giving of the great commission, or at Paul's commissioning on the road to Damascus, it can allow Painter to safely deduce the following surprising conclusion. Ridderbos alluded to this practice: 'It is equally clear that by using the form-content schema, it is possible to end up with the most radical reductions of the kerygma and teaching of the New Testament.' Redemptive History & the New Testament Scriptures p 74

What comes as no surprise is that the book is recommended by Jimmy Dunn who hails Painter for 'building up a picture which is much more positive than most have recognized.'

About the Author
Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers.These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.

Luther's Attack on Indulgences

Luther's Ninety-Five Theses were written in direct response to the practice of selling indulgences in the 1500s. This book begins with an introduction explaining the circumstances under which Luther posted his theses. It does a good job of quickly explaining the main points one needs to know before reading the theses. There are sporadic footnotes in the text to clarify some points. I have a protestant background and found Luther's topics to be techincally Catholic. However, I did not feel lost in my reading. It would be of a great advantange to have some knowledge of the Catholicism of the time. The theses mark the start of the Reformation, and a read-through would be beneficial for any student of history or Protestantism. The book itself is very short (18 pages). Luther's Ninety-Five Theses are readily found from any internet search, and this may be a much more cost-effective option. The introduction may be the only benefit of actually buying this edition.

GREAT and important work, but this volume is too pricey

First off, let me say that I rate the 95 Theses 5 Stars all the way...the rating above is not about Luther's work, but this volume, which is only 18 pages but costs 4 dollars. That's a little steep. As for the 95 Theses themselves, let me say, "Smashing!" I wish I had been there for the discussion that followed. However, I think it best to have grown up with the benefit of the teaching of justification by faith alone being as common as it is today.
The topic of the theses is the selling of indulgences - they do not really get into justification by faith alone. This was a surprise to me. Luther brings into question both the selling of indulgences and the manner in which they were sold. While reflecting on the book, words like "excellent" and "fascinating" come to mind. Definitely not to be missed.
Still, the price for this itty bitty "book" is too steep; I would recommend getting another volume of Luther that contained this piece, or simply looking the 95 Theses up on the internet.

Luther's 95 Theses is without question a very important historical document. However, I don't think most of us would buy, say the Gettysburg Address, as a stand-alone book. First, you can never find it on the shelf. Second, you can get it as part of many almanacs, encyclopedias, etc.

A radical Jesus

We have all been fooled! That was the feeling I had when I put down Jesus and Nonviolence. Jesus is not the weak, nonpolitical, do not rock the boat-kind of guy that they talk about in church. The Bible researcher Walter Wink shows with clarity how Jesus both gave examples and himself acted very politically to change the society he was living in. He challenged the rules and the laws of his day's powers. He acted powerfully against the hypocrisy of the religious leaders and he questioned the unlawful occupation of his land. There were others that did this before him. The difference was that they used violence to protest against the occupation. Jesus acted with loving nonviolence. He challenged the injustices but always with respect for the other. Wink goes on to show us that the ideas and methods of nonviolence are very alive also today, actually more than any time before. Only in 1989-90 there were fourteen nations that underwent nonviolent revolutions, all of them successful except China. In this thin book Wink has given me a whole new view of Christianity, has strengthened my belief in nonviolence and has given me hope for a nonviolent future. Quite an accomplishment for a 117-pages book!

I carry a copy of this little book with me wherever I go, and I've reread it many times with great enjoyment. This is an essential introduction to the nonviolent way of Jesus for all Christians, including great commentary on relevant biblical passages and invaluable guidance for respecting the dignity of one's "opponents." It makes a super gift.

The only lasting way to eliminate an enemy is to make him your friend.

Wink Does It Again

If you are considering or committed to the way of nonviolence and searching for firm footing in the actual practice of peace and reconciliation, read this book. As always, Wink is challenging, creative, convincing, and compelling. The many stories he tells to illustrate his points are quite interesting and practical.
This is vintage Wink at his best. I will refer to this little book often. It would be a steal at twice the price.

Lutherans mistaking a mission statement as mission

This book is a wonderful book which calls the church back to remember the power of the Biblical narrative found within worship--particularly in the sacraments. But unfortunately, it mistakes this proclamtion of hope as missional, even if the message remains within the walls of the worshiping space.
My dictionary has 12 definitions for "mission," everyone of them implies an action. This book rarely talks of Christian mission as an action. For these writers mission is simply the declaration of justice and hope God gives the world--which is taking place within a worshiping community. There is little sense of actually taking this mission statement out to the people who could benefit from it.

Mark Allan Powell is a Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary and an internationally recognized theologian and Bible scholar. The author of more than 25 books and 100 articles, Dr Powell has served as a Visiting Professor at universities such as the University of California, Berkeley, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Chicago, as well as at schools in Estonia, Tanzania, and Russia. Scholarly approach to piety.

"Loving Jesus" is by Mark Allen Powell, the Robert and Phyllis Leatherman Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus Ohio, and he was the keynote speaker at the 2009 LIFT event of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the ELCA. He has several important scholarly books to his credit and is in the front rank of those who explain and encourage piety without leaving taking off their academic hat.
This is not as easy or as common a skill as it may seem. On the one hand, you have superb scholars such as Gordon Fee who write very good books on reading the Bible for a lay audience, but in spite of Professor Fee's personal piety, virtually none of it comes out in his books beyond the Introduction. On the other hand, we have Bart Ehrman, a NT scholar of the first water, who can explain difficult issues of textual criticism to a lay audience better than anyone else, but who has left the faith for agnosticism. In between, we have Powell. I was thoroughly convinced of his scholarly chops when I read his survey of recent writings on the historical Jesus (Jesus as a Historical Figure). Therefore, I was quite surprised to hear his LIFT keynote address. It had none of the histrionics of a TV evangelist, but it had a level of piety which eclipsed that of most lay people I know, and even some clergy I have known. The very best thing was that the piety was not in spite of his scholarship. It was amplified and strengthened by his scholarship.
The good news for us today is that this book, Loving God, has virtually all the ideas which Professor Powell expressed in his LIFT address, in greater detail, with all Biblical references fully laid out. And that's just the beginning.
My experience in reviewing cookbooks was that if a book did not impress me with something within five minutes, usually within the scope of the Introduction or the first few pages of Chapter 1, it was not a five star book. If I got to the third chapter and still didn't find anything which justified my laying down $35 for the book, it lost another star. Based on that criterion, Professor Powell's book gets five stars, with a bullet. My reason for that is that the book give excellent answers to two questions I've puzzled over for several years now. The great thing is that the two questions have the same answer.
The first question is `How do you tell the difference between a person imbued with the Holy Spirit, and a loose cannon?' The second question is `How do you support the notion that attending church services (for those who are able) fosters a superior level of piety and spirituality than saying your prayers and reading the Bible at home?'. The answer to both revolves around the nature of the Holy Spirit. It is very easy to mistakenly picture the Holy Spirit as something internal. This is the picture demonized by some modern philosophers as the `ghost in the machine' (Gilbert Ryle, The Concept of Mind, 1949). And, there is much to dislike about this myth. Powell hits this point right on the head, when he says that
`There is a sense in which I don't like the word spirituality very much. It seems to describe something unreal... "Spiritual things", almost by definition, are those things that we cannot see or hear or smell or taste or touch. Accordingly, what counts as "spiritual" is pretty vague.' Amen.

Powell's answer to all this fuzziness is as simple as you may expect. We are Christians because our faith is based predominantly on our relation to Jesus, the body of whom is the body of the church. Just as our Pastor said at a recent sermon, lots of other things we do in the church are important and useful, but participating in the Eucharist and in the body of Christ is what is really important.
The importance of Jesus is that to know God through Jesus is to be in a relationship with someone who has been seen, heard, and touched. Jesus did things in our world as a flesh and blood person, and following the Holy Spirit is Simply behaving toward others and towards God as Jesus taught and did. The Jesus we love is not the product of my imagination. He lived on this earth and people wrote down things he did and said. Even better is the promise at the end of Matthew 28:20'...and remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.' Matthew also has several statements how one stays close to Jesus by being close to fellow congregants, as at Matthew 18:20 `For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them'.
Piety based on loving Jesus through the congregation poses a bit of a problem to American evangelicals who promote `a personal relationship with Jesus'. This sounds great, but nowhere in the Bible does anyone ever `invites Jesus into his or her life to be his or her personal Lord and Savior--nor does Jesus ever indicate that he would come into anybody's life and be his or her personal Lord and Savior even if they were to ask him.' This language is simply not in the Bible. A double irony, if you will, comes from the fact that those passages where Jesus does speak to an individual have been blurred by the inclusive language of the NRSV, so as to erase the one on one connection, as at old Mark 8:34'If any man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up the cross...' versus new Mark 8:34 `If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross...'. There are good effects of inclusive language. This is not one of them.
Powell devotes several chapters to the one thing which most surprised me about his keynote address, the expectation that Jesus will return in our lifetime. I can assure you Professor Powell is not living with his head in the sand. He is clear that the HOPE of Jesus coming is quite a different thing than the PREDICTION that the sun will rise tomorrow, the jobless rate will go down eventually, and the hole in the ozone layer will get bigger, unless we do something about it. After thinking about how frequently the NT speaks of the coming kingdom of God versus how frequently its mentioned in the sermons we hear today, one wonders whether we aren't double-thinking our faith. It's ok to believe this, but that over there hasn't happened for 2000 years, so I guess it will never happen. I guess even back around 65 C.E., the early church gave up on the idea and started writing stuff down for future generations.
Professor Powell's book is about a maturely naïve piety, with some serious scholarship called in to strengthen the arguments from faith. It's the rare kind of book which keeps sound theology, Biblical scholarship, and piety all in the air at the same time, and make it look effortless in the telling.

how did Christ fulfill the law?

That's the gist of Wright's thesis, attempting to answer that question. How did Jesus fulfill the Law and why, elsewhere, does Paul seem to say the Law was abolished? How could Jesus abolish and fulfill the Law at the same time?
Wright's central argument hinges on the assumption that Paul understood and explained salvation in corporate and covenantal terms--i.e. God made a covenant with Israel not a bunch of individual Israelites. As such Wright finds that most Protestant theology from the time of Luther and Calvin reflects late Medieval scholastic concerns rather than 1st century Jewish thought. The problem is not that Protestant theology is bad as such but that its central theological concerns don't help us understand how Paul, a 1st century Jew, would explain himself to Christian converts from Judaism and paganism.
Wright argues that the covenant of the Torah predicted a need for covenant renewal and a return from exile (he assumes that the exile did not end because the Second Temple was rebuilt, which is a view that is controversial for some). Paul sees both these promises as being fulfilled in Jesus. Since the Mosaic law predicted its renewal and a redefinition of Israel as people on whose hearts God would write the Law, Wright argues that Paul sees Jesus and the Spirit as fulfilling these promises.
Wright's explanation of Paul's high view of the Law assumes that Paul was a Pharisee, a hardly debatable point. Wright also relies on this fact iPaul explains that the Law was not the problem, people were, because people did not have the Spirit. Wright's "already but not yet" explanation of Paul's eschatology is crucial to understanding his take on how Paul viewed Jesus and the Law. The purpose of the old covenant was fulfilled in Jesus but the age of the new covenant has not fully arrived.
Wright also assumes that Jesus completely redefined Israel around himself and his teaching. People who follow Christ are thus the new Israel. Some Christians hold that the covenant with Israel is still in full effect and that Christians have a separate covenant. Wright doesn't seem to hold that view and if you do you won't agree with him. If you don't buy Wright's premise that Israel was not back from exile you will disagree with a lot of what Wright says.
I found a lot of discussion about Paul and the Law to be so mired in talking about the legal metaphors they seemed to lose sight of the purpose to which those legal metaphors are used in Paul, talking about Israelite law and Jesus. Wright's discussion of Paul and the Law was helpful to me because he set aside the topics Protestants usually talk about and simply did exegesis of the texts. It's not the easiest read but it's a very helpful book.

How would a first century Jew understand Christ and the Law?

I would have to argue that Wright is closer than most to helping us understand this confusing issue. Wright's main thesis is that Jesus Christ, the Jewish Messiah, fulfilled what the Law could not do, thereby fulfilling and abolishing the Law in one fell swoop. Wright also argues that Paul's understanding of the Old Testament would have been covenental, and that the two important issues that shaped Paul's theology and belief system were monotheism and the corporate covenant. First, Wright argues that to Paul the title Christ would not carry with it the titular implications that Westerners associate with the name, but designated Jesus as the Jewish Messiah. Thus, Jesus was the Messiah and embodied and completed what national Israel could not. Paul's conversion allowed him to radically reinterpret all of the Old Testament passages that spoke of Israel's renewal and reconversion to God as passages that spoke of the death and resurrection and Christ. To Paul this was the defining moment in God's salvific plan when He accomplished through Christ, what the Law and national Israel could not.
Furthermore, Wright argues that the new community formed by the work of Christ and the agency of the Spirit, fulfills the obligation of the Law through Christ. This community is corporate and is centered in the Messiah King of the new community, and this King is none other than Jesus Himself. Wright argues that just as the ancient Israelites had an actual share in the stock of the king and were connected to him through tribal bond and ethnicity, so too do Christians belong to the Messiah through membership in the new community.
In the second half of the book Wright deals with the question of the place and function of the Law within this new community and what purpose it served if it could not in fact give life to those who adhered to it. First, Wright, like Paul, unequivocally argues that the Law is good, and is holy and just because it is sent from God and was sent for a particular purpose. The Law is not evil because it was not the Law which urges us to sin, but the forces of sin and death. The Law, in both Eden and Sinai, was exactly what sin and death needed to seize mankind and grant them the opportunity to sin. Therefore, the Law could not fulfill it's primary purpose which was to bestow life on those who possessed it and cherished it. Nevertheless, this was all part of God's plan since, as Wright argues, the Law was the measure which enabled God to concentrate sin in one place, namely the nation of Israel, and then deal decisively with the problem through the Messiah. Therefore, Christ fulfilled what the Law could not accomplish, but at the same time He abolished the Law since the Law no longer needed to strive to give life to those who sought it. That life had now been bestowed in Christ, and those in Christ through membership in His community, have fulfilled the obligations of the Law and the Law is no longer a burden.
Of particular interest was Wright's view of the Israel issue. Paul saw that the Jews clung to Law as the distinguishing marker that separated them from the rest of humanity and made them privy to God's blessings. Yet, all the Law could provide for the Jews was the promised curse of Deuteronomy, but the Jews did not understand this and believed the Torah was the one thing that allowed them to claim God's blessings. Paul argued that with the death and resurrection of Jesus the Law no longer provided the ethnic privilege to the Jews that it once had, since the promises made to Abraham had now been fulfilled and membership in the family of God was decided upon faith, and not works of the Torah. Finally, Wright's exegesis of Romans 11:26-27 is interesting and controversial to say the least, but very well argued for and convincing. I can't say enough about this book since the research, argumentation, and scholarhip are all top-notch.

Important and Impacting Work

This opens up the works-law, grace-law debate that the Lutherans and Calvanists have been having for centuries. It not only opens up the debate, but in fact changes everything. Wright sees Paul's thought process as being governed by election and monotheism. In this work he exegetes and explores some of the more difficult passages of the New Testament such as 1 Corinthians 15:20-57, Romans 5:12-21, Philippians 2:5-11, Philemon 6, Colosians 1:15-20, 1 Corinthians 8, Galatians 3:10-22, 2 Corithians 3:18, Romans 8:1-11 and Romans chapters 9-11. He deals carefully with these texts and draws heavily on the allusions and direct quotes of the Hebrew Scriptures found in these texts. Wright's conclusions are Christ/Messiah centered, precisely because, as Wright points out, Paul's theology centered on Jesus as Messiah. This work takes the Torah as positive that was circumvented by sin to bring a curse on the people of the solution (i.e. Israel) and turn them into the people of the problem. In the end Israel who was called to be light to the world and fix the problem of death instituted by Adam's sin, but instead Israel finds that they, like Adam, have fallen under the curse due to sin using the Law, which was good to bring about the curses of Deuteronomy. The Messiah takes on this curse and traps sin and the cross and defeats it in the resurrection. The Messiah is Israel's true representative and bears the curse for Israel, but the badge of getting into Israel is faith in Jesus and not possession or the keeping of the Torah. Wright works all of this out in the book and shows how sin is defeated and why the cross was necessary. He also demonstrates that the true Israel was Jesus and those who have put their faith in him. I highly recommend this work. Even if you have read all of Wright's other books, this one stands alone.
