Witnessing for Peace: In Jerusalem and the World, by Munib A. Younan

The rapidly deteriorating situation in Israel/Palestine has dashed hopes of any imminent peace or even accommodation between the Israeli people and the Palestinian people. A leader in Palestinian Christianity, and an outspoken advocate of nonviolence and of Palestinian rights, Bishop Munib Younan directly addresses this situation and its imperatives. Born of Palestinian refugee parents and raised in Jerusalem, Younan has spent his life pastoring Palestinian Christians and searching for nonviolent solutions in this complex and volatile religious and political scene. In this volume, Younan presents first the historical and social context of the Palestinian situation, beginning with the not-well-known story of Arab Christianity and his own background. He elaborates his own theology of nonviolence, centered in the idea of martyria-heeding a call to justice, inclusion, and forgiveness. He illustrates the notion with dramatic and often tragic episodes and shows how it can address key issues in the current struggle with Israel over statehood, land, and refugees. Younan's model of Christian nonviolence also has demonstrable benefits in addressing terrorism, interreligious strife, and global peacemaking. Younan's is a voice all Christians of conscience should hear.

From Publishers Weekly
When Westerners ask Palestinian Lutheran bishop Munib Younan when his family converted to Christianity, they are often surprised to learn that the conversion occurred many centuries ago. In Witnessing for Peace: In Jerusalem and the World, Younan shares many poignant stories from his ministry as the Bishop of Jerusalem of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. He opens with a memorable story about being the only Christian representative chosen to accompany Muslim leaders in a meeting with Pope John Paul II at the Dome of the Rock in 2000. Immediately after this wonderful moment of interfaith cooperation, Younan was accosted twice-first by a Muslim extremist man and then by a Jewish woman who spat on him-because of the cross he wore. This juxtaposition of mutual respect tempered with outbursts of hatred sets the stage for a heartfelt book that both explains the venerable tradition of Palestinian Christianity and issues a clarion call for peace in the Middle East. Younan's book is an important reminder that although Christians constitute less than 2% of Israel's population, their presence is a potentially significant determinant of the region's future.

The third part focuses on what it really means to be a Christian in a place of great political and religious apprehension
By GODFRED EFFISAH
Dr. Younan’s book is divided into three parts. The first part, which explains the contexts, recounts his personal story of the Christian faith from his perspective as a witness in the midst of the conflicts between Palestinian Arabs and the Jews. The second part, titled “Martyria and Nonviolence,” deals with Bishop’s Younan’s efforts in promoting peace and justice in the area in a nonviolent way through his witness to the gospel. The third part focuses on what it really means to be a Christian in a place of great political and religious apprehension.
I greatly recommend Dr. Younan for his resilience in the face of all the sufferings he has endured over the years as a member of the Christian minority living in the Muslim and Jewish world. Their Arab Christian identity is complicated and faces at least two challenges on the account of their dual minority; as Arabs in Israel they are caught up in the complex relationship between Arabs and Jews, and, though Arabs, they are minority among the Arab Muslims in the Arab section of the State of Israel. Therefore, they confront daily the religious and socio-economic challenges posed by the Muslim majority in that part of Israel. The author’s courage and effort towards peace and justice promotion through nonviolent means in a religiously and politically tense environment is admirable.
One point that particularly caught my attention is the author’s strong evangelical calling that Christians witnessing to the gospel of Christ should express it in both words and actions. This is a kind of witness that invites the individual Christian to walk on the path of nonviolence and the promotion of peace and justice emphasized by scripture.
The author reflects on his own witness to the gospel in the area, both as a Christian leader and as a minority, and offers ways through which peace and justice could be promoted nonviolently. He emphasizes shared responsibilities between the stakeholders, education for peace, witness to hope, witness for moderation, and tolerance and intolerance as examples of the nonviolence approaches the author endorses for Muslims, Jews and Christians.

As a critique, the author seems to present some inconsistent views on his general call for peace and justice through nonviolent means. He seems to be either justifying the violence pursued by the Palestinians or lacks consistence regarding the fact that, the church does not support violence from any group. Example of this instance can be found under the sub-topic “violence and occupation” (pp. 77-80). A specific example is his comment that, “the church cannot condone this. The church must provide a witness of nonviolence for the Palestinian people,” (cf. P.79). Meanwhile, throughout his book, he vehemently spoke against violent approaches from all stands. Could our efforts towards the effective promotion of peace and justice be achieved if we justify one group’s action against the other?
Finally, the book offers fairly balanced view of the situation in the Levant from the point of view of a Christian leader who is both a Palestinian and Jewish citizen. Through the book, the reader comes into contact with the realities of being a Christian minority in a densely Muslim- and Jewish-populated area and suggests how one could participate in the path to nonviolent promotion of peace and justice in both Jerusalem and the world.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants a different perspective ...
By Karen E. Pugatch
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a different perspective on life in a world where religious and political tensions are a significant part of daily life. In the first part of his book Dr.Younan, the Evangelical Lutheran Church Bishop of Palestine and Jordan in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, recounts the history of Palestinian Christians along with the story of his own faith journey. This is a part of the story of Jerusalem and this part of the world that may be surprising to some readers.
The middle section of the book Dr.Younan describes his understanding of Martyria or witness. He speaks passionately about the importance of nonviolent means of demonstration as well as the need for collaboration between Muslims, Jews and Christians in promoting peaceful and just interaction in Jerusalem and the surrounding area.
Despite his status a a "double minority"(Arab and Christian), Dr. Younan is a powerful voice for peace in his city and in the Holy Land. In the face of the many challenges he has faced his struggle to live his Christian Faith is very inspiring.

Being Called to Witness Suffering
By Amazon Customer
In Witnessing for Peace, Bishop Munib Younan, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, reminds us that we are all called to be witnesses to the suffering in the world – in our own neighborhoods and around the world wherever there is suffering, violence, oppression and injustice. Being a witness is a great responsibility. It is a sign of love for our neighbors especially for those who are voiceless and powerless. Being a witness gives a voice to their suffering. Being a witness tells the world of their injustice. Being a witness shares God’s love with them in their time and place of need.
In this book, Bishop Younan gives witness to the struggle of the Palestinian people in a region of political and religious unrest. Being a Palestinian Christian, Bishop Younan has grown up in the middle of the struggle and has experienced the suffering first hand. He is a witness to it every day. Bishop Younan gives a voice to those who are not covered by main stream media. In his book, he tells the stories of people ignored by the media. His voice calls for peace and for justice for all people in this troubled region – Jews, Muslims and Christians.
