With typical wit and jargon-free clarity: Stephen D. Moore guides us through the maze of concepts and projects that constitute the multidisciplinary phenomenon of post-structuralism. Moore centers on two lengthy exegetical examples - a Derridean reading of John and his interpreters and a Foucauldian reading of Paul and his. The book also deals with deconstruction's relationship to Theology and its relationship to biblical scholarship old and new - historical critical, narrative critical, and feminist. Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament (Paper), by George J. Brooke

Brooke illuminates the first-century world shared by the Qumran community and the writers of the New Testament. The Dead Sea Scrolls have provided Old Testament scholars with an enormous wealth of data for textual criticism as well as theology. But, as Brooke skillfully demonstrates, New Testament scholars can use the Scrolls to learn more about the linguistic, historical, religious, and social contexts of Palestine in the first century. A wide range of topics and themes is discussed, including Matthew's Beatitudes, the lost song of Miriam, Levi and the Levites, women's authority, and the use of scripture in the parable of the vineyard.

Mutual illumination
By FrKurt Messick
This collection of essays by George Brooke, professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Manchester, brings together a wide body of work that has appeared in different places. I was familiar with several of the articles-turned-chapters in this book from some of these other sources - for example, chapter 15 appeared in briefer form in Biblical Archaeology Review, one of my favourite magazines. Other chapters appear as essays in other books on my shelves, but it is worthwhile to have the assembled collection under one cover.

According to Brooke, most of the essays have been revised, some of them significantly. A comparison of several with sources I already had bears this out. In some cases, later research has corrected details (scholarship regarding the Dead Sea Scrolls is an ever-growing body of work); in other cases, the information has been expanded and deepened.

I am always wary of books that combine the terms 'Dead Sea Scrolls' and 'New Testament', because in fact there is no Dead Sea Scroll that contains New Testament writing - there are some controversial fragments of a few words (and sometimes only a character or two), but current scholarly thinking believes that there are no authentic New Testament writings among the scrolls. Brooke discusses this in his introduction, among the three points of significance he brings up relating the New Testament to the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Dead Sea Scrolls provide context and contemporary or near-contemporary writing to the New Testament, and are thus very valuable.

Not only are the content and context of the Scrolls of interest, but also the history of the scholarship surrounding them is fascinating. Brooke's first chapter covers this subject well in brief but fairly comprehensive fashion (this chapter also appeared in a BAR publication, 'The Dead Sea Scrolls at 50'). The subsequent chapters in the first part of the book look at the Scrolls in more general terms. The second major part of the book looks at particular scrolls and texts - the Temple Scroll, MMT and Luke-Acts, the Apocryphon of Levi and the Messianic Servant High Priest, and other scrolls are examined here. The final major part of the book has chapters that lok at scrolls that have special relationship or insight to bear on each of the four canonical gospels. Brooke describes these as 'mutual illumination of the Scrolls and the Gospels', as each can provide new exegetical and hermeneutic possibilities for the other.

The idea of mutual illumination is Brooke's main focus, seeing the future of Scroll and New Testament research being one in which each can influence and strengthen the other - in as far as Jesus, Paul and the other early Christians were deeply rooted in Jewish traditions, an understanding of the Scrolls can deepen the understanding the world in which they lived. Additionally, the ways in which the early New Testament writers worked can shed light on the Scrolls.

This is a valuable text to have as part of my Dead Sea Scrolls collection.

Tripartite Essays: between DSS and the New Testament
By Didaskalex
"Those few scholars who persist in the view that a direct link can be made between Qumran and the New Testament are probably constructing an approach to the evidence which cannot be sustained. those links between the Qumran and the New Testament are more likely to be indirect." George Brooke, pp. xviii

The Messianic Scroll:
In 1991 the DSS scholarship community was stunned to learn about a five-line scroll that contained fascinating similarity on the death of the Messiah. This remarkable scroll was translated by Dr. Robert Eisenman, of Cal State University, published for the first time, it revealed incredible references to a Messiah who suffered crucifixion for the sins of men. Although the scroll translators kept claiming that there was no evidence of early Christianity in the unpublished scrolls, this new scroll radically contradicts their statements. This earth-shaking scroll is of vital importance, as U. Chicago professor Golb stated, "that contrary to what some of the (DSS) editors said, there are lots of surprises in the scrolls, and this is one of them." This scroll provides an amazing parallel to the New Testament revelation of the Messiah who has suffered death before He would ultimately return to rule the nations, a dual role of the Messiah as Christians came to believe. This same scroll identified the Messiah as the 'Shoot of Jesse', while being 'pierced' stresses Psalms 22:16 Messianic prophecy: "They pierced my hands and feet." Here is a reminder of Isaiah who prophesied that the messiah would be wounded for our own transgressions!

Mutual Illumination:
In the conclusion to his book's introduction Brooke states, "... Those concerned to appreciate some of the exegetical details preserved in the DSS would do well not to omit evidence of the New Testament in their research of contemporary Jewish literature, which might help in the explanation of challenging fragmentary passages. New Testament scholars in turn, should recognize that the value of the DSS for the better appreciation of the Jewish background of much in the New Testament does not lie exclusively in particular matters of organization or Messianic belief, but much more broadly in the ways in which Jews contemporary with Jesus and Paul constructed their own self understandings and identities..., interpretations which gave life to texts written in earlier generations."

Tripartite Essays:
In his first five 'Generally Illuminating' essays, the author traces the history of DSS discussing the relation of Jesus to the Essenes and his sayings to their scrolls. In the Canon within the canon he explores, under the argument his Rylands chair predecessor FF Bruce strerssed for the New Testament, focusing on four OT books, Genesis, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, and Psalms. He debates that the scrolls are more than a quarry for NT ideas.
* Part Two, Particular Scrolls illuminate their NT Counterparts, in six essays, discusses the Temple Scroll in relation to the NT. In addition that they both understand the Crucifixion in a similar way, he compares divorce, and the messianic servant, between others.
* Part Three, of five essays entitled, 'Mutual Illumination of Particular Passages,' where he refers to Puech's Matthean (4Q) Beatitudes, in proof of the significance of DSS in interpreting NT writings. He also discusses the parable of the vineyard, in Isaiah 5, and gives a fascinating interpretation of the 153 Fish of John 21:11, a theme that Evagrius Ponticas has used for 153 chapters on Prayer.

Sixteen Essays:
Like the thirty sayings of Amenemope, preserved in Proverbs, G. Brooke, distinguished Scrolls scholar, and editor of the Journal of Dead Sea Scrolls Discoveries, who teaches biblical criticism and exegesis, took to the hard task by gathering and editing sixteen of his own related essays. He exclaims, "How can one summarize briefly 50 years or more of scholarship on the Qumran scrolls and the study of the New Testament? ... that there is some kind of relationship between Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls, and that the DSS enhance how Jesus' Jewishness is best understood." He reveals his privileged background on the cutting edge of scroll research,' in the words of M. Moore, of fuller Theo. Seminary. Praised by the eminent J. VanderKam who wrote, "Brooke, basing himself on his extensive knowledge of, and experience with both bodies of literature, sets forth intriguing cases for interrelations between them and does so with his accustomed care and thoroughness."

An extensively researched and scholarly accounting
By Midwest Book Review
The Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament offers expert analysis in the study of The Dead Sea Scrolls by George J. Brooke, Rylands Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Manchester, England. While most studies draw links between The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Old Testament, The Dead Sea Scrolls and the New Testament demonstrates how scholars can use the Scrolls to learn more about the linguistic, historical, religious, and social contexts of first-century Palestine and therefore better understand the New Testament. An extensively researched and scholarly accounting, with a select bibliography, and separate indexes of Bible references and Non-Biblical sources.

From the Back Cover
Since its inception almost 200 years ago, the study of religion has informed, enlightened, provoked, and challenged our notions of humanity's deepest beliefs and longings. Now Walter Capps, nationally recognized for the quality and depth of his teaching, has written the first full-scale introduction to the history and methods of religious studies. To assess the many points of view in this mature but diffuse discipline. Capps uses the idea that four basic of fundamental questions and three enduring interests have given formal structure to the study of religion: the essence of religion; the origin of religion, descriptions of religion; the function of religion, the language of religion, comparisons of religion and, the future of religious studies. In this way Capps relates the chief insights and theories of philosophy, anthropology, phenomenology, sociology, and theology of religion, and spotlights theorists from Immanuel Kant to Mircea Eliade. His valuable text unites in a single narrative and conceptual framework the major methodological proposals for the academic study of religion; treats all the major theorists in their respective disciplines, schools of thought, and intellectual movements; treats the whole discipline as a dynamic and evolving tradition. Religious Studies constitutes not only an erudite introduction to the field, exhibiting vast scholarship and careful assessment, but also a bold synthetic proposal for its future.

An admirable but unsuccessful effort.
By A Customer
This is a fundamentally flawed book, though the motivation and the breadth of scope are, in many respects, admirable. Unfortunately, that breadth is also much of the problem. Capps tries to provide a comprehensive overview of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of religion. In his encyclopedic efforts, though, he fails to provide a coherent discussion of the "the making of a discipline" (the text's subtitle). I can imagine a reasonably successful attempt at such a book being organized as a history. The logical place to begin would be to look at the history of pre-Enlightenment attempts to grasp other religious traditions. This might tend to emphasize Western thinkers, "religious studies" as a discipline begins as a Western academic enterprise, but should go beyond that scope to include similar efforts in other cultures. Next one would move into Enlightenment discussions of "natural religion." Then, Look at efforts to study religion by the pioneers of the social sciences. Next, turn to the religionswissenschaft and its offshoots followed by contemporary theologians and advocates of the ecumenical movement. The text could conclude with a look at the diversity of contemporary theories and methods for the study of religion and contemporary debates among proponents of opposing schools of thought (such as McCutcheon vs. Rennie or Katz vs. Forman).
Capps does not take this approach. Instead, he offers six windows onto religious life and institutions (essence/definitions of religion, origins, description, function, language, and comparison) and seeks to categorize a host of scholars accordingly. In itself, an approach somewhat like this, that recognizes the multiple vantage points from which religion can be viewed, could also be quite valuable. But, many of the connections he makes in this effort are rather arbitrary. For example, Marx is found in the chapter on the essence of religion, though he could also easily fit into the section on functions of religion. Of course, some of Capps' attempts to circumscribe the thought of prominent scholars come across as superficial. But, to a large extent these flaws may be inevitable in this sort of project. It may be unfair to be overly critical here, though these remain problems with the text.
More problematic is the fact that Capps asserts in the opening lines of his preface that religious studies can be viewed as one continuous narrative. He qualifies this by stating that the narrative winds its way through multiple "modalities" of scholarship. Even so, his treatment fails to elucidate the continuity he seeks. Rather than a multi-branched but coherent arboreal model of the discipline's history, religious studies still looks like a rhizomatic field of inquiry when Capps is done. Much of this is once again due to his inclusiveness. Capps includes anyone whose work has been relevant to the study of religion, including art historians like Warburg and Panofsky. I applaud Capps for situating religious studies within a much larger context in the humanities and social sciences and agree with him as to the relevance of theorists who might otherwise be neglected in a work like this. But, this does not serve his stated agenda.
Ultimately, Capps' book fails because it tries to be both an encyclopedia and a synthesis and succeeds at neither. Wishing to provide a handbook for the study of religion is certainly understandable and I have looked to Capps' book as a quick reference for theorists with which I was not yet familiar. As long as one uses it as the most elementary of starting points and allows Capps' comments to point beyond themselves to more fundamental works by the scholars themselves, the book can be somewhat useful. On its own, as a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the academic study of religion, it is much less valuable.

A summary of major contributors to religious studies
By A Customer
This book attempts to be a sort of phenomenology of religious studies, relating briefly all the major theorists/theories concerning religious studies. Unfortunately, Capps takes on more theorists than a book this size can cover well, and ends up including entire sections that are completely vacuous.
In addition, it's poorly written, with many typographical errors.
It's a good idea, just a poor performance

Karl Rahner: Theologian of the Graced Search for Meaning (Making of Modern Theology), by Geffrey B. Kelly

Karl Rahner's (1904--1984) vast erudition, deeply creative proposals in all the key theological areas, and pervasive influence made him one of the giants of twentieth- century theology. Yet the very depth and extent of his contributions have made reading Rahner a formidable test of one's interest. Geffrey Kelly's anthology of Rahner's writings overcomes the obstacles beautifully. Like prior volumes in this highly praised series, Karl Rahner features a lengthy Introduction, which situates Rahner's thought firmly in his biography and spirituality. The Select Bibliography neatly organizes the vast work by and on Rahner. And the Selected Texts are creatively chosen, strategically beginning not with Rahner's philosophical anthropology but with the spiritual life. Together they comprise something of a mini- summa of Rahner's contributions to the chief areas of theology: * prayer and the spiritual life; * grace and freedom: * revelation and the development of dogma; * the doctrine of God; * Jesus Christ; * the Holy Spirit; * the church; * sacrament and symbol; * Christian faith, praxis, and martyrdom; * methodology in theology.

Theology of grace and spirit
By FrKurt Messick
This volume on the works of Karl Rahner is part of a series by Fortress Press entitled 'the Making of Modern Theology: Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Texts'. Each of the volumes in the series focuses upon one particular theologian of note. These volumes are of use to students, seminarians, ministers and other readers interested in the development of theological ideas in the modern and postmodern world. Each volume is a reader of key texts from the theologian highlighted - the text entries are annotated a bit by the editors, and the editor of each volume provides an introduction setting the general stage for context and understanding.
Editor Geffrey Kelly describes Rahner as being a theologian of grace, particularly the search for the meaning of life and grace. Rahner is one of the leading theologians of the twentieth century to hold significance in both Catholic and Protestant circles; a priest whose dissertation was rejected at first, he became one of the most prolific and enduring (and, according to many a student and scholar alike, one of the most difficult to understand) theologians of the twentieth century. Rahner's work is so voluminous and so broadly encompassing of the entire discipline of theology together with history, philosophy, literature and more, that it is difficult for many to get a grasp on his thought.
Geffrey Kelly tells of the poll in the late 1970s in which North American theologians were asked the greatest influence on their thinking -- Rahner was second only to Tillich and Aquinas (he ranked ahead of Luther, Augustine, and many others), even among theologians of all denominations. Rahner, a Jesuit priest, combined his ministry with his education very early, studying for his doctoral work in the area of metaphysics. His exploration through Kant and Marechal (who developed influences of Fichte, Blondel and Rousselot into a synthesis) led him to the conclusion that the entire world is filled with the grace of God, the source of all human desire, truth, and meaning.
His dissertation rejected because it was 'too much Heidegger, and not Catholic enough', Rahner transferred to the discipline of theology rather than philosophy. His teaching and scholarly career was interrupted during the second world war, when he served in various capacities including being a minister to the victims of bombed cities; this influenced him in ways that are reflected in some of his writing immediately after the war. Later, Rahner would be a theological expert in attendance at Vatican II, but traditionalists would often wonder if Rahner was too liberal, too influenced by philosophy or other religions, or too radical in his thinking. He was frequently criticised by the church hierarchy, including having Cardinal Ratzinger denounce one of his last books. Cardinal Ratzinger is head of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a twentieth-century name for what was once called the Holy Office of the Inquisition. Ratzinger's denunciation was not the first for Rahner, but his work always survived, and still survives.
Geffrey Kelly's sixty-page introduction to the volume gives a brief biography, weaving in details of the development of his ideas and writings, as well as an extensive section of broad overviews of Rahner's thought by topic. Kelly pulls texts from the full range of Rahner's writings, developing the full range of systematic theology topics (grace, revelation, doctrine of God, Christology, ecclesiology, etc.) as well as some practical theological aspects (prayer and spirituality).
Each volume in this series also has a selected bibliography section -- this one for Rahner is divided into several sections: bibliographical resources (this section is longer for Rahner than for any other theologian in the series); primary works of Rahner in English; autobiographical works; dictionaries and encyclopedias; secondary scholarship about Rahner and his ideas; and a listing of the twenty-two volumes of Theological Investigations. The book is well indexed, with indexes for subjects and for names. This is a very good book for scholarship. Much of Rahner's work was in German (as is evidenced by the bibliography); some of his later work was in English -- thus, much of the work here is in translation.

Jesus the Jew, by Geza Vermes

This now classic book is a significant corrective to several recent developments in the study of the historical Jesus. In contrast to depictions of Jesus as a wandering Cynic teacher, Geza Vermes offers a portrait based on evidence of charismatic activity in first-century Galilee. Vermes shows how the major New Testament titles of Jesus-prophet, Lord, Messiah, son of man, Son of God-can be understood in this historical context. The result is a description of Jesus that retains its power and its credibility.

Know Torah, know Jesus; no Torah, no Jesus
By John S. Ryan
Elisabeth Schussler-Fiorenza somewhere tells a cute story about a class she once taught, in which she had the doggonedest time persuading a fine old Catholic gentleman that Jesus was actually Jewish. Finally he admitted that she had convinced him. "But," he added at once, "the Blessed Mother for sure was not!"

Well, yes, she was, and so -- of course -- was Jesus himself. This volume, by Jewish scholar Geza Vermes, is probably the single work that did the most to drive this point home to the modern world.

There are naturally some difficulties with Vermes's work. One of these is that he relies on Talmudic writings that date, in their written form, from about 500 years later than Jesus; this objection he has dealt with in _Jesus and the World of Judaism_. Another is that he has provided no real reason why his charismatic Galilean hasid should ever have gotten himself crucified; this objection he tries to meet in _The Religion of Jesus the Jew_ (rather lamely and unconvincingly, to my mind; he suggests, at bottom, that Jesus just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time).

Then, too, some of his parallels (the main ones being Hanina ben Dosa and Honi the Circle-Drawer) have been questioned for various reasons. Some of these reasons seem cogent to me as well, and I do not think Vermes has provided a _complete_ picture of the historical Jesus.

Nevertheless this groundbreaking work is the one that (re)started the conversation in the first place. If Jesus is now recognized by many Jews and Christians alike as having been, as a matter of history, a faithful Jew who in all likelihood did not intend to found a new religion separate from Judaism, this work played a crucial role in bringing that common recognition about.

Nor is everything herein merely out of date. Vermes's discussions of -- for example -- the "Son of Man" sayings and the nature of Galilean piety are still cited in the literature, and not always for the purpose of refuting them. Whether complete or not, Vermes's account contains a great deal of truth.

At some point anyone trying to cope with the vast array of "Jesus scholarship" of the last three or four decades should get around to reading this absolutely seminal work. _Jesus and the World of Judaism_ is unfortunately out of print as of this writing, but _The Religion of Jesus the Jew_ is also recommended.

Great research and insight
By Andrew Breedlove
This is a great book. Thorough research and an in depth look at the jesus of the gospels. I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half. But Vermes conclusions are excellent and greatly contribute to the discussion around the historical Jesus. The book can be very academic and esoteric at times. I was most impressed by the depth of ancient sources. Vermes builds his cas utilizing material from the Torah, books found in the Dead Sea scrolls, the gospels and numerous other texts that are not well known outside of academia.

Jesus brought to life in the context of his true origins
By A Customer
Jesus the Jew is the first book in a trilogy written by Geza Vermes, Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies at Oxford. The other 2 books in the trilogy are: "Jesus and the World of Judaism" and "The Religion of Jesus the Jew". No doubt the titles of these books will be a bit off-putting to some readers, however I believe that Vermes has done an excellent job in presenting an objective account of the historical Jesus that should be read by all interested Jews and Christians alike.
Vermes takes the position that Jesus the historical figure may be best understood in terms of his Judaic origins. Vermes portrays him as a charismatic, Chassid, similar to a number of others that existed in Jesus' time. He argues that many of the titles given to Jesus or titles that Jesus ascribed to himself such as "Lord", "Son of Man" and "Son of God" may be best understood in terms of Jewish culture and Jewish writings of the time. In fact a great deal of the book is devoted to explaining these and other titles. An example is given where the title "my Son" (son of God) was at one point bestowed upon a Jewish charismatic named Hanina Ben Dosa who, like Jesus, also broke Pharisaic etiquette at times but nonetheless was a respected teacher and miracle worker. Upon this point, Vermes concludes that the notion of "Son of God" in the Gospels is not an original form of terminology but was already well founded in Palestinian Jewish Belief to denote teachers that were highly respected by their peers.

Many more examples such as the one mentioned above are given with regards to all titles bestowed upon Jesus in the Gospels. It is easy to see how such titles may have been adopted, misunderstood and finally corrupted by the gentile church to serve its own end. Many Christian readers may be shocked by the implications of Vermes' investigation, however it is important to remember after all that Jesus was Jewish and therefore certain elements of the Gospels would no doubt adopt some Jewish precepts.

All in all, Vermes has shown himself to be a Scholar of impeccable caliber and should be more widely read in Judeo-Christian circles. His book is at times a little dry and hard to read, but it is worth it for the wealth of information that it contains on the subject of Jesus the Jew.

From the Back Cover
'In his remarkable trilogy on the principalities and powers, Walter Wink has biblically verified what more and more of us have come to realize intuitively: namely, that underneath and within the social, economic, and political crisis we face, there are profoundly spiritual realities which must be confronted.' -Jim Wallis, Sojourners

Whether you agree with him or not, reading this book will change your thinking
By Jeremy Myers - Writing at RedeemingGod
Have you ever read a book that blew your mind?

"The Powers" Trilogy by Walter Wink are three of the most challenging books I've read in a while. I'm not saying I agree with everything in them, but the concepts in these books are so "otherworldly" that it will take me some time to grasp and process what he says. For these reasons, all three books have a place on my "Burning Books" list.

I have previously reviewed "Naming the Powers" in which Wink provides most of the exegetical and Scriptural data for his study.

In the second volume, "Unmasking the Powers", he delves deep into explaining several of the key forces behind human existence, and how they govern our lives. The topics Wink discusses are not often taught about in churches or seminaries, and if a pastor were to teach some of what Wink believes, it is likely that he or she would get fired.

Like what?

Well, let me give you some examples. In his chapter on "Satan" he writes this:

"We have so moralized [Satan] that we fail to see that the most satanic temptation of all is the temptation to become other than ourselves. When people try to be "good Christians"--what is that but Satan's crowning victory? For "being a good Christian" is always collectively defined by some denomination or strong religious personality or creed. One does not need to "live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" in order to be a "good Christian"; one need only be pliant, docile, and obedient" (p. 19).

Or this:

"[William Blake writes that] Every religion which preaches vengeance for sin is the religion of the Enemy and Avenger, and not the Forgiver of Sin, and their God is Satan, Named by the Divine Name. Blake is not talking about Satanism, but about Christian churches that behave satanically under the banner of Christ. To his criterion for discerning satanic "Christianity" we might add these: hostility toward those who are different; projecting evil on other who are then demonized; claiming doctrinal certitude; breeding psychic dependency, unconsciousness, stagnation, fear, guilt, or hatred; depicting God as a monster (as in ascribing the death of loved ones to God). Satanic Christianity can be rigidly legalistic or morally slack...but these are characteristics of much of what passes as Christianity" (p. 36).

Try preaching that in your church and see how long you last.

Quotes like this are found on nearly every page, and what Wink says will challenge everything you believe about the spiritual realm, not only about Satan, angels, and demons, but also about politics, government, science, and nature.

The last half of the book was incredibly uncomfortable reading for me, as much of what Wink wrote seemed to border on spiritism, animism, polytheism, mysticism, and maybe even some Gnosticism. But I think that in the end, he was able to demonstrate that when Christianity moved away from such errors, we let the pendulum swing too far.

The call of Walter Wink is for followers of Jesus to return to a proper and biblical understanding of the powers that are around us, in us, and through us, and which share creation with us. Only in this way can we truly worship God with all of creation.

Some fresh insights; incoherent synthesis
By Jacob
Wink seeks to recapture the integrity of speaking about “spiritual powers” in a materialistic world. If that is all his thesis is, he is more or less successful, albeit with some major problems. The reviewer faces a problem of a double-paradox. In terms of the larger scope--that there are invisible forces that aid or harm us--Wink is successful. In terms of narrower focus--exegesis of texts and historical reconstruction--Wink is interesting, if not always careful. However, when you combine the two visions his project falls apart.

If I can summarize his view of angels/demons it goes something like this: they are personified moments of the Archetypes’ acting upon the human psyche. This isn’t necessarily wrong but it doesn’t always square with Wink’s analysis in other places. Some aspects of the Christian tradition did suspect that paganism’s gods and Plato’s “Forms” were probably similar to what we would call angels and demons (and it is important to keep in mind that Plato thought the Forms had causal power).

His chapters on angels engage in a unique interpretation of Revelation. Wink suggests that aggelos in Revelation 2-3 refers not to a specific bishop, nor to what we normally call “angels,” but that the church in its totality refers to an angelic manifestation. There are some problems to this, but a case can be made for it. The “you” in these chapters is always singular, not plural. Further, if aggelos does refer to a messenger or bishop, then why does the term never refer to that afterwards?

Wink suggests that “angel and people are the inner and outer aspects of the same reality” (72). Bizarrely enough, the angel is held accountable for the church’s action. This allows Wink to acknowledge that each church has a “spirit” that manifests the collective subconscious of the church. All psycho-jargon aside, there might be something to this. Anyone who has dealt with church problems can usually sense the “spirit of the church in the air.”

The angel can only be confronted by Christ via a human, prophetic intermediary. God does this, rather than speaking directly to the corporate angels, because, as Wink suggests, heaven is the realm of transcendence latent within human possibility (81). Okay, that’s just silly but he does capture an important truth: heaven is not “up there,” but rather that which is beyond the veil.

Criticisms and Problems

~Wink acknowledges the reality of “guest spirits” via occult paraphernalia (58). However, he defines demonic possession as “an estrangement from one’s self as imago Dei and full social being” (59). The problem with this definition is that it doesn’t make sense of his previous acknowledged “guest spirits.” Further, he admits that “outer personal demons do possess knowledge beyond that of their hosts, albeit a meager knowledge.” Very true, but it doesn’t fit with his definition of demonic activity.

He speaks of “this primordial power of evil” (25) as opposed to a Satan-personality (not sure why they are mutually exclusive?) yet this raises the question: from where (whom?) did this primordial power of evil originate? He wrestles with this very question (27ff), even coming across various insights and questions (e.g., does Satan gain access by our neuroses? Washington and Moscow are actually on the same side), yet dodges any real answer.

~Is he saying that the fragmentary nature of evil (i.e., the Satan, if you will) is what prevents our realizing self-transcendence (30)? What is this but Gnosticism?

~He defends paganism (24, 36). Seriously, I am not kidding. Perhaps he is saying we shouldn’t demonize (oops!) the Other. Fair enough, but has he done research on Moloch worship?

~He engages in emotional blackmail (182 n94). He tells the story of a woman who grew up Roman Catholic, wanted to become a priest but denied access. She got angry, became a prostitute, and joined the church of Satan (later she was redeemed). A sad story, to be sure, but what conclusion does he want us to draw?

~Wink engages in inflammatory rhetoric, as in Spanish “thugs” (74). Mind you, I have no love for colonial Roman Catholicism, but this seems more like “sneaking in a cheap shot.”

~He pushes his own agenda. Either a church is “self-engrossed or engaged in social justice” (76), which usually means the Democratic National Convention.

~Advocates a one-world government (102). This follows upon a particularly astute discussion of nationalism and how nations are biblical. Not sure how his two theses mesh.

Conclusion

He regularly engages with fresh insights and interesting exegesis. Unfortunately, it is marred by a polemical and deeply political tone reminiscent of his era.

Volume 2 of an Incredible Trilogy of Theology and Social Analysis
By J. Golden
Volume 2 of "The Powers Trilogy," UNMASKING THE POWERS is one of the most powerful and incisive treatments of the evils which afflict our society and our church that I have ever read. With wisdom, scholarship, and evangelical zeal, Walter Wink deals with the many ways that the powers of evil infiltrate our lives. This book is a must for anyone who would understand the seductive and destructive aspects of evil which are so much a part of human life. It provides not only methods by which the influence of evil can be unmasked, but also hints of how that influence can be counteracted. -- Morton Kelsey (from the back cover of the book)
