In this challenging and enlightening treatment, Brueggemann traces the lines from the radical vision of Moses to the solidification of royal power in Solomon to the prophetic critique of that power with a new vision of freedom in the prophets. Here he traces the broad sweep from Exodus to Kings to Jeremiah to Jesus. He highlights that the prophetic vision and not only embraces the pain of the people but creates an energy and amazement based on the new thing that God is doing. In this new edition, Brueggemann has completely revised the text, updated the notes, and added a new preface.

Hard to Beat
By Erin J
Walter Brueggemann is the most dynamic writer of Old Testament Theology in the World. Here he deals with the Prophetic imaging of an alternative community which God's people are called to be. In the OT Israel is always called to not succumb to the idolatry of the royal powers and center its life around Yahweh as an alternative people who practice real justice, mercy, and love. Brueggemann offers great insight into the texts of the Old Testament. You will always say "wow, why did I not see this before" when reading a Brueggemann book. I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in the Bible.

A little hard to read, but well worth the effort
By Jeremy Myers - Writing at RedeemingGod
If there is one thing the world needs today, it is prophets. Not the zany kind you get in some Pentecostal and Charismatic churches where apparently the goal is to put the Psychic Hotline out of business.

No, Bruggeman paints a portrait of the Biblical prophet as one who contends against the normal order of society and culture which has set itself up at the expense of the marginal, the outcast, the poor, and the weak. Bruggman calls this "the royal consciousness" but I think we could also refer to it as "the Powers that Be" and here in the United States goes by such names as "the multinational corporation" and "politics in Washington D. C."

Bruggeman argues that the prophet does not contend against such entities with arms and use of force, but with the much more powerful weapon of imagination and creativity.

To make this point, he uses the examples of Moses against Pharaoh, Jeremiah against the Monarchy, and Jesus against the religion of Israel.

One of the things that so struck me about this book is that ever since I was in high school, every time I took one of those odd (and error-prone) "spiritual gift inventory" tests, I always came up with "Prophet" as my top spiritual gift.

When I was a pastor, and because I didn't believe that prophets (the way I thought of them) were in use today, I interpreted this to mean that I was to proclaim or "forthtell" the Word of God, rather than foretell future events or predict the future.

Bruggeman has given me a window by which to look at the world and current events through the lens of prophetic imagination. Imagining a different world. A different way of doing things. A different order. A way of living and being that creates an alternative community to the methods of Pennsylvania Avenue, the antics of Hollywood Boulevard, and the religion of Main Street. Though this book was hard to read, it is going in my Burning Books list because it set my mind on fire.

The most encouraging element of the book for me was near the end. I have so many doubts, fears, and misgivings about the route in life I am currently traveling. But right at the end, Brueggemann wrote this:

"I, like most of the others, am unsure that the royal road is not the best and the royal community the one which governs the real "goodies." I, like most of the others, am unsure that the alternative community inclusive of the poor, hungry, and grieving is really the wave of God's future. ...There is no unanguished way out of it. It does make clear to us that our ministry will always be practiced through our own conflicted selves. No prophet has ever borne an unconflicted message, even until Jesus" (p. 118).

Conflicted and anguished and uncertain about the path I'm on and the future I imagine certainly describes my mental state. But if Brueggemann is right, then this is exactly where I want to be.

So, I will "imagine on," and see where the rabbit hole leads.

The Tasks and Traumas of God's Greatest Prophets
By Peter Wittstock
Here is an extraordinarily valuable little book (104 pp. of text) for Christians who would like to better understand the essence of the prophetic impulse and the nature of the subsequent ministry that may be derived from it. Those with Pentecostal or Charismatic backgrounds or experiences will discover a profound spiritual resonance and a clear biblical insight in THE PROPHETIC IMAGINATION by Walter Brueggemann (Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1978/1983).

Brueggemann shows convincingly from the ministries of Moses, Jeremiah, and Jesus, how each man in response to either an oppressive empire (Egypt) or unjust, religious community (pre-exilic Judah and first century Israel) employs "radical criticism" to "dismantle" the dying or dead culture. Solomon's imperial rule is also examined as an example of how a "royal consciousness" may serve to subvert even the community of promise resulting in satiation and the inevitable numbness and death. Second Isaiah (Isa. 40-66) serves as the primary example of the second aspect of the prophetic task; namely, "energizing" the despairing community with hope.

Brueggemann presents his thesis concerning the would-be Christian prophets' need for personal anguish, grief, and mourning as contrasted with the less painful exercise of mere anger and apathy while he ministers as God's instrument. For me it was surprising and gratifying to discover that an Old Testament professor from a mainline Protestant tradition could supply such compelling insights concerning both the tasks and the traumas of God's prophets. Not even my Pentecostal seminary professors helped me in this regard as much as this short read.

In the final chapter, it is clear the Brueggemann has the contemporary Christian community in mind as those again in need of the prophets' ministry today, but such discussion is not elaborated. Although he puts his finger on the many "bourgeois . . . obdurate" congregations of Christendom today--endicting them as closed and unsupportive to prophetic ministry--the courage to rebuke and expand upon their disinterest is not forthcoming here. The examination remains theoretical with the author's admission of "my own unsureness about this perception" (p. 111). The door remains ajar for others, however, as we read: "grief and praise are ways of prophetic criticism and energy, which can be more intentional even in our age" (p.111).

In the twenty-eight years since the book's publication, it is worth noting that prophetic intimations have become increasingly evident in numerous North American settings, although usually outside established church organizations. (The phenomena of the burgeoning "para-church" ministries during the last couple decades being supporting evidence.) As I Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4 indicate: the opportunity for prophetic ministry has been the intent of the Holy Spirit all along! The office of prophet still remains a high and painful calling with comparatively few willing to suffer its dark side for very long despite their gifting to do the job.

THE PROPHETIC IMAGINATION is highly recommended to all would-be apostles; prophets; evangelists; and pastors, who may first need deliverance from the "royal consciousness" that still holds them and always militates against the prophetic.

The Resurrection of the Son of God (Christian Origins and the Question of God, Vol. 3), by N. T. Wright

Why did Christianity begin, and why did it take the shape it did? To answer this question – which any historian must face – renowned New Testament scholar N.T. Wright focuses on the key points: what precisely happened at Easter? What did the early Christians mean when they said that Jesus of Nazareth had been raised from the dead? What can be said today about his belief?

This book, third is Wright’s series Christian Origins and the Question of God, sketches a map of ancient beliefs about life after death, in both the Greco-Roman and Jewish worlds. It then highlights the fact that the early Christians’ belief about the afterlife belonged firmly on the Jewish spectrum, while introducing several new mutations and sharper definitions. This, together with other features of early Christianity, forces the historian to read the Easter narratives in the gospels, not simply as late rationalizations of early Christian spirituality, but as accounts of two actual events: the empty tomb of Jesus and his "appearances."

How do we explain these phenomena? The early Christians’ answer was that Jesus had indeed been bodily raised from the dead; that was why they hailed him as the messianic "son of God." No modern historian has come up with a more convincing explanation. Facing this question, we are confronted to this day with the most central issues of the Christian worldview and theology.

Review
"- 'The sweep of Wright's project as a whole is breathtaking. It is impossible to give a fair assessment of his achievement without sounding grandiose: no New Testament scholar since Bultmann has ever attempted - let alone achieved - such an innovative and comprehensive account of New Testament history and theology.' Richard B. Hays on The New Testament and the People of God

an unexpected treasure
By A Reader
while nodding in approval to what the other reviewers have said thus far:
having devoured the first two works in Wright's _Christian Origins and the Question of God_ series, i was eagerly anticipating the third volume, which i expected to be on the life and theology of St. Paul; thus i was somewhat disappointed by the subject matter of the third volume when it finally (at last!) appeared. i kept asking myself (with my head slowly shaking), "an entire volume on the resurrection?"
but my doubts were quickly laid to rest when i received the work. Wright offers us here a masterpiece on the resurrection, as theologically deep as it is historically broad in scope. Wright not only persuasively argues for the fact of the resurrection, but places it firmly in context as he brings to light the many aspects which constitute it, and upon which it bears definitive influence. the "world-affirming" nature of Wright's conclusions, which he highlites continually throughout the text, actually reminded me something of Maximus Confessor.
which brings up my final point: N. T. Wright is an unusually excellent exegete. so often, New Testament exegetes are simply dull; such is not the case with Wright. his work is saturated in wit and laced with solid reason. one always leaves his work feeling somewhat "charmed". but the best thing about Wright, in my opinion, is that he is capable of actually being an exegete and a theologian at the same time (yes, this is in fact uncommon in our day and age). thus we are left with not simply an argument based on texts, or dry analyses stacked one atop another; rather, we see perhaps the finest New Testament scholar of our era approaching the texts with a master's touch, and the reader is thus in a position wherein the full radiance of the subject matter can be perceived.
the only critique i have is that it is somewhat repetitive; it almost seemed as though it would be better to consult its various chapters in reference format--as needed--rather than "reading it straight through". yet considering the above mentioned breadth of scope, this is certainly a small price to pay.
in sum, this book is highly recommended--there are few New Testament scholars who can be placed alongside Wright, and those of us who are interested in this field are certainly blessed that he chose to write an enourmous work on this particular topic. with this work, Wright has succesfully placed the Resurrection of the Son of God where it belongs--in the center of Christian theology, world history, and the cosmos itself.
... which makes the wait for his work on Paul (if on Paul it be) all the more nerve-racking.
five stars, without a doubt.

Massive, definitive work on the resurrection of Jesus
By Alvin Kimel
With this 800 page volume, N. T. Wright has now written the definitive work on the resurrection of Jesus. From this point on, scholars will be arguing with, for, or against Wright. All discussion must now start with this book and Wright's discussion of the biblical accounts of the resurrection of Jesus. In breadth and depth of scholarship, *Resurrection of the Son of God* can only be compared to Raymond Brown's *Death of the Messiah*.
Wright thoroughly dismantles all attempts to interpret the resurrection narratives as "interpretations" of the death of Jesus or as symbolizations of the new found faith of the disciples of Jesus. Wright also effectively destroys the arguments of those who advance the theory that the first Christians employed resurrection language to speak of Jesus' eternal, though spiritual, life with God after his death on the cross. The evidence does not allow us to entertain the possibility that the apostles might have claimed that Jesus had been raised from the dead even while his corpse was still lying in the tomb. If the desire was to simply assert that Jesus was now "with God" or that his soul was in heaven, there was language and conceptuality available to make such claims. To speak of someone being "raised from the dead" can only have one meaning within first century Judaism--God has acted to bestow upon that person an embodied, "physical" form of existence. The surprising thing is that the early Christians employed this language about Jesus even though it was clear that the expected general resurrection of the dead had yet to occur! There was no precedent at all for such a restricted use of resurrection language; but such was the mystery of Easter!
It is time for the Church to finally move beyond Bultmann, Marxsen, and Crossan and confidently reclaim the New Testament proclamation of Jesus' embodied resurrection. This message may be wrong; but let's at least be clear that this is the message of the Church.
Highly recommended.

What the first christians really said about Jesus
By Lester
We finally have with us the third volume of Tom Wright's great work. If after reading the second volumen, Jesus and the victory of God, anyone thought that Tom wasnt interested or didnt believe in the resurrection of Jesus, now is the time to find out. Important in his exposition is making clear that when Paul and the evangelists talked about Jesus being raised and/or resurrected, they were NOT talking about a post-mortem spiritual existence or Jesus's continued prescence in the early church. They werent either talking about a mere resucitation or using the word resurrection as another way of saying that he was dead and resting with God. They were literally speaking about death's reversal, about someone being dead and then being alive again, with a (trans)physical body.
My favorite chapter was the one devoted to what Paul actually said about his encounter with Jesus. You might be surprised to learn that there was no falling from the horse in the road to Damascus, and that the narrative in Acts about a blinding light and a voice is only a biblical model to tell about an encounter with God's sphere. Tom Wright is more interested in what Paul himself said, not Luke. And Paul's words cannot be read in another way: he says that he saw Jesus.
If the early christians were wrong or right about Jesus being raised from the dead is another point. Tom puts the evidence in front of us and lets us decide. What remains clear at the end is that those 1st century christian-jews really believed that Jesus raised from the tomb in the first Easter.

From the Back Cover
"Written with clarity, eloquence, and passion, Dorothee Soelle's memoirs resound with a clarion call to remember the costs of injustice. Just as we must never forget the horrors of history, so too we must never forget the lives of those who live for justice. Soelle's is such a life, and this account is a gift to the imagination, to the intellect, and to the will. Against the Wind is a joy to read and has much to offer students, scholars, activists, and all who seek to live out an 'indestructible love for life." ---Sharon D. Welch Author of a Feminist Ethic of Risk

dorothee soelle a Lutheran who is also a sectarian a poet who is also an essayist a systematic thinker who also live and writes with passion a believer in life who can life creatively within the reality of death acquainted with eschatological exuberance she insists that we pray for the world, but only as we strive to live within it made from dust and created in god's image she gives us ground for hope she believes, along with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in both resistance and submission but only in their proper proportions she fits no conventional categories and can employ a fairy tale to make a point she is a pacifist who can demand stern commitments because they are already part of her own life she is an activist who is also a mystic she refuses to separate prayer and politics and stresses the redemptive possibilities in every human situation as a scholar, she is deeply immersed in the prophets and as a feminist she is committed to equal rights for all god's children everywhere

Join her. It will be worthwhile; she presents her faith on her own authority, which she has already donated to the glory of God ---A Tribute by Robert McAfee Brown

A few years ago, my friend and editor Johannes Thiele suggested that I write an autobiography. "Are you crazy? I am no unharnessed politician, and I have better things to do!" was my first reaction. But he did not let go. And so a productive tussle arose about what was important and worth telling, what was already prefigured or hinted at in various places of my books and talks, and what could be taken over, brought together, and left out. The result of that tussle or pleasant cooperation is before you. Thank you, dear Johannes. Every headwind also has its upward draft.

Much is missing that a classic autobiography would contain. I have told nothing about my father, nothing about the encounters with Hannah Arendt, Ernst Bloch, President Gustav and Ms. Hilda Heinemann, Premier Johannes Rau. Nor is there anything about my abhorrence of crocheting and knitting or enough about my favorite activities, swimming and singing. I have preferred to speak about certain central aspects of life in poetry, seeing that life brings along enough prose as it is.

I am very glad that this book now also appears in English. It is surely no coincidence that a German woman-theology, who has become rather well-known, found no teaching position in her fatherland but could work in the more liberal world of the American academy. The encounter with that world has enriched and formed me to an extraordinary degree: Being "right in the belly of the beast," as we used to say, that world deepened my fears, but much more than that, it strengthened my hope in people who do not submit to the dictates of the economy, the military, and the advertising industry. Indeed, there was and still is what we always called the "other America." ---from the Preface

This is the highest honor I can offer: The life of Dorothee Soelle speaks for itself. It needs no justification; it refisters no longing to prove itself, to base on appeal on status, education, gender, color, theological niceties.

Indeed the life of Dorothee has been blessed with all the above and more; admiration and friendship come to mind. So does that ironic, unexpected last "blessing" promised the disciples. First, plenty of good things: "homes, brothers and sisters, mothers, children and property." Then the twister: "and persecution besides."

In a sense dear to Bonhoeffer, this woman's theology is worldly. One thing: as the Incarnation is worldly. From Latin America to the U.S. to Europe she has tested the gospel (and been tested!), laying the Word against the realities of this horrific century---torture, disappearance, oligarchic immunity, enforced misery, weapons, warfare, the buttoned-up arrogance of the great powers.

And in personal life as well, testing, testing---in marriage and motherhood, in being pilloried and denied academic place. In aligning herself, to put the matter briefly, with the plight of Jesus in his century or ours; one and the same.

Her writing, here and elsewhere, has the edge and clarity of a telegram to the world. One does not waste words; the time is short. Speak up then, shout aloud, on behalf of the inarticulate and victimized.

And remember, an intellectual also has a heart.

Therefore this heartfelt book. Which is as much about friendship as anything else---or more so.

Let me rejoice, too, in a long friendship with Dorothee. I learn from her. Theology must not be mired or stalemated in the mind. It must enable, induce an imperative.

Stand squarely in the world. And once there, withstand ---Daniel Berrigan, S.J. from the Foreword

This is one of my favorite books. If you have not gotten the chance to read any of Dorothee Soelle's writings, let this be your intro; she is an amazing writer. Dorothee Soelle was a very open-minded theologian, radical with her thoughts and deeply considerate with her heart. Her heart-filled and beautiful stories are very moving to say the least. It is rich, real, well written, and worth the few pennies you'll invest.

Storyteller's method for studying congregational culture.
By J. Golden
A way of studying and understanding congregational culture. Extemely helpful to preachers, pastors, lay leaders and others who are seeking to understand and thereby better lead/guide a congregation. Hopewell's method, based on narrative types developed by Northrope Frye, is truly and genuinely original. He argues for a narrative-based analysis of congegational culture. Our stories about ourselves best reveal who we are. Very highly recommended.

clear, concise introduction to wide range of topics
By Wes Howard-Brook
Richard Horsley has been an immensely productive scholar in recent years, publishing or editing a plethora of books in the emerging field of the intersection of religion and empire. "Jesus and Empire," "Paul and Empire," "Paul and Politics" all provide detailed explanations of how the New Testament can only truly be heard for what it is in the context of the Roman imperial reality of the first century, and the ongoing imperial reality of our world today.

This book, part of the "Facets" series, offers pithy chapters on major themes, both within and beyond Christianity. I have used several chapters in an undergraduate class on "God and Empire" to the positive response of students. In particular, most helpful have been:

1. the summaries of his earlier writing on popular resistance to empire in the time of Jesus

2. "Christmas" as a celebration not of the birth of the Messiah but of the "victory" of consumer capitalism

3. the chapter in how western media have twisted "Islam" in the context of Iran into something unrecognizable by practicing Muslims for reasons all too clear from the perspective of Western empire.

In under 100 pages, Horsley offers solid material to start valuable conversations among students or others interested in politics and religion in the world today.

Excellent Introduction to Jesus Research
By Peter Kirby
The subtitle 'A Comprehensive Guide' is well-earned. Amazon.com incorrectly lists its length as 624 pages; in actuality, it is 642 pages long, and every page is large. There is plenty of information here on almost every aspect of Jesus research. The book consists of the following sixteen chapters.
1. The Quest of the Historical Jesus
2. Christian Sources about Jesus
3. The Non-Christian Sources about Jesus
4. The Evaluation of the Sources: Historical Scepticism and the Study of Jesus
5. The Historical and Religious Framework of the Life of Jesus
6. The Chronological Framework of the Life of Jesus
7. The Geographical and Social Framework of the Life of Jesus
8. Jesus as Charismatic: Jesus and his Social Relationships
9. Jesus as Prophet: Jesus' Eschatology
10. Jesus as Healer: The Miracles of Jesus
11. Jesus as Poet: The Parables of Jesus
12. Jesus as Teacher: The Ethics of Jesus
13. Jesus as the Founder of a Cult: The Last Supper and the Primitive Christian Eucharist
14. Jesus as Martyr: The Passion of Jesus
15. The Risen Jesus: Easter and its Interpretations
16. The Historical Jesus and the Beginnings of Christology
Finally, there is a retrospect in which a short life of Jesus is presented.
This work was created with use as a textbook in mind. At the end of each chapter, there are 'Tasks' required of the reader that encourage a direct participation in the interpretation of the primary source materials. While it is suited for use in the classroom, it is also easily adaptable to personal study. Each chapter can be easily covered in a convenient session of a couple hours. There are extensive bibliographic notes for further study in particular topics.
The following historical facts about Jesus emerge from _The Historical Jesus_:
1. Jesus was from Galilee (p. 164).
2. Jesus was baptized by John (p. 207).
3. Jesus performed exorcisms and healings (p. 301, p. 304).
4. Jesus was accused of being in league with the devil (p. 76, p. 297).
5. His family thought him to be mad (p. 570, p. 582).
6. Jesus rejected an overestimation of himself as 'good teacher' (p. 558).
7. Jesus preached about the Kingdom of God; e.g., the logion concerning 'Taking the kingdom by storm' (p. 580).
8. Jesus spoke most of the parables that have been preserved (p. 338).
9. Jesus said something against the Temple cult (p. 432).
10. The disciples of Jesus fled at his arrest (p. 428).
11. Jesus was crucified with the titulus 'The King of the Jews' (p. 458).
12. The disciples were disappointed that Jesus did not 'redeem Israel' (p. 428).
One possible weakness of the book is that it offers no over-arching explanation or model for the historical Jesus. Rather, the book investigates each aspect of Jesus ('Jesus as...') more or less individually. On the other hand, this may be considered a strength, especially given that the real Jesus himself is not a cardboard cut-out figure but rather an actual human being. This is brought out beautifully in another book by Theissen, _The Shadow of the Galilean_.

A Textbook For Studying the Historical Jesus
By peculiar
This book by the well-known German New Testament scholar and his research assistant aims at being a comprehensive textbook for studying the historical Jesus - and largely acheives that aim. This book is not short nor for the casual reader and anyone attempting to enter its portals must be prepared to be questioned by the text as much as expecting a thesis to be laid out before them. The book even shades into discussions of Easter and early Christology, thus transgressing recognised disciplinary boundaries in an ever more defined academic world.
It has to be said that this book is hard going. This is a million miles away from previous books by Theissen, particularly his "The Shadow of the Galilean", which was narrative. Here we have dense argumentation, tables, questions and all the things we would expect to find in an academic textbook. I believe that this will (and maybe should) limit its readership. One interesting feature is the authors' decision to go with a "Jesus as" approach to its discussions. Thus, we have "Jesus as poet", "Jesus as healer", "Jesus as prophet" and "Jesus as a charismatic", etc. Jesus is also seen as the "founder of a cult" and as a "martyr". I would say that these designations meet with greater or lesser success - both in themselves and within the argumentation of this book. But the treatments here are thorough if not also totally convincing.
In short, this book is for the committed student most of all. The casual reader will have to struggle with technical background argumentation and ancient documentation. If they feel able and willing to do that then this book is worthy of their attention. It is a full and thorough discussion of the historical Jesus.

I couldn't stop reading this book
By Amazon Customer
Though being a German customer and having read the German original in the first place, I am nevertheless able to say that the English version of Theissen's and Merz' study guide (it is certainly more than that!) adds a refreshing new style and content to the quest for the historical Jesus. Following the idea of Theissen's first book 'The shade of the Galilean' the two German scholars unfold lots of material to work with, to work on and to consider. The book presents itself in chapters, whose length is just appropriate to spend a couple of hours on. The questions and suggestions for further study encourage to go further. The style (in both, English and German) is refreshing and turns the book into a really enjoyable reading experience, yet a challenging one at any time. As mentioned above, I found myself barely able to lay it down. Having encontered Theissen's books during my time in the seminary, I felt enriched and well prepared for seminars, presentations and written assignments. Now, serving a congregation as a pastoral intern, Theissen's and Merz' sophisticated material and research provides me with material for teaching as well as for preaching. Therefore, a book for students as well as for ministers and interested laity. A book, worth purchasing or giving to somebody, yet not without 'The shadow of the Galilean' as an additional great reading experience.

Review
"As a student of the New Testament, I admire Johnson's thorough familiarity with scholarship, his desire to stay close to the texts themselves, and his lively interest in religious experience." -- ---Daniel J. Harrington, S.G. Theological Studies

"Readers of Luke Johnson's proliferating studies have come to expect a blend of masterful scholarship and raw imagination at once engaging and penetrating. His introduction to the New Testament will not disappoint. . . . The fresh vantage points into the contour and content of the texts themselves that his model opens up are to date without equal." -- ---David P. Moessner, Theology Today

"This is a resource which nobody who works with the New Testament should be without." -- - --Robert Morgan Theology

I have written this book for those who want to understand the origin and shape of the New Testament writings but are unable to find a comprehensive introduction that is neither repellingly technical nor appallingly trivial. I have called it an interpretation rather than an introduction for the simple reason that most volumes going by the name of introduction are either handbooks devoted to the communication of information concerning a narrow range of scholarly issues or popularized versions of conventional scholarly wisdom for college students. In contrast to both, I have tried to provide a genuine interpretation of Christianity's earliest writings. By so doing I draw the reader into the most important critical questions concerning their understanding. In this sense, every interpretation is also an introduction. By no means is every introduction an interpretation.

The organization of this book, its argument, and the choice of topics have all been dictated by the desire to make these writings intelligible and alive for the contemporary reader who want to meet and understand them more than scholarly discussions of them. I have considered all the critical issues pertinent to the understanding of the writings, but I have gone beyond presenting a consensus of scholarly opinion. The reader will find in these pages a signal "reading" of the evidence from beginning to end---my own. My approach to the writings and the critical issues is independent. It is not, I think, idiosyncratic. I have learned more than I can ever credit to my teachers and to the reading of other scholars. But in this book I advance my own understanding of the New Testament in its origin, in each of its parts, and as a collection. Sometimes I agree with the majority of scholars; sometimes I disagree. I have tried to indicate the reasons for both. As in every attempt to deal with the whole of a subject within a reasonable space, much has been eliminated or abbreviated. More advanced readers should recognize in my sometimes elliptical remarks a thoughtful response to critical scholarship.

In order to keep my argument and presentation clean I have not used footnotes, nor do I refer to other scholars by name in the text. The reader will, I hope, forgive the inevitable air of omniscience that results. It seemed better to restrict reference to primary sources, above all the texts of the New Testament itself. Occasionally even these are so numerous as to make the detection of decent prose a problem. At the end of each chapter I have provided an annotated bibliography. Some entries support my presentation, others provide alternative points of view, still other give the reader additional resources for study. With very few exceptions I have included only literature in English, since the notes are meant to be an aid to the reader rather than a demonstration of learning. Given the rate of translation, not that much of great value is missing. I have also tried to refer to literature that is reasonably available. Translations of primary sources are acknowledged at the head of each bibliographical section. ---Preface to First Edition

The first edition of The Writings of the New Testament: An Interpretation appeared in 1986. The manuscript for that edition was completed in 1984. The bibliographies were fairly up-to-date but included only a few items from 1984. The contents of the books are therefore almost fifteen years old. Despite the usefulness of the first edition---it went through thirteen printings---it is clearly time for a new edition.

I have not changed the basic philosophy or design of the book. I have simply tried to update and improve it. The updating takes two basic forms. The first is the completely revised bibliographies. Some older items are eliminated; many more recent items are included. I have continued to use only English-language references for the reasons stated in the first edition. The second updating is found in two appendices. One deals with newer methods that have developed over the past fifteen years; it is only a sketch but it shows the general lines of development and its bibliography provides some starting points for reading. The other appendix deals with the question of the Historical Jesus. I explain why I continue to omit this topic from the body of the book, and try to indicate some of the critical questions and sources to consult.

The improvement of the book is found in the line-by-line editing. Every sentence has been assessed for accuracy and clarity. Many passages have been rewritten, some have been omitted, some added. The argument of each chapter remains the same, though I hope it is clearer and more accessible. All of the references have been checked and corrected. I have also added study questions at the end of each chapter to make the book an even better teaching tool. ---Preface to Revised Edition

A Refreshing and Helpful Interpretation
By M. Tapie
What many of the reviews on this page seem to miss is that this work by LTJ seeks to acheive "interpretation" of the text rather than the common historical-critical approach. He does treat some of the history and critical issues throughout, mostly he does this in the beginning. However, historical-critical is not his concern. Johnson effectively unfolds, in a very helpful and introductory way, the theological flow and cohesiveness of the New Testament. If you are looking for a commentary or a historical critical treatment of the text this is not your book. If you are looking for an introduction to the theological themes and structure of the New Testament that is thoroughly aware of the difficulties and limitations of the historical-critical approach yet still utilizes the method in reasonable ways this book is for you.

A "reader friendly" commentary on the New Testament text
By Midwest Book Review
The Writings Of The New Testament: An Interpretation By Luke Timothy Johnson (Robert W. Woodruff Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins, Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia) is an erudite, scholarly, yet thoroughly "reader friendly" commentary on the New Testament text, in relation to history of the ancient world, Christian beliefs, and a page-by-page analysis of the scripture itself. An accompanying CD-ROM provides ready access to cross-referenced text. The Writings Of The New Testament is highly recommended as an exhaustive study enhanced with extensive bibliographical annotation and thought-provoking questions.

Fine book, poor physical edition
By Dr. Suzo
I need to distinguish the text from the physical book edition.
This physical edition is a disaster - paper so shiny you can't see the print, book so heavy and floppy you cannot hold it, binding so tight the pages don't stay open (and I rented it so did not want to crack the binding), size odd and heavy so does not fit in carrying bags, on small tables. I actually gave up trying to read it and bought another edition, used, much more readable. Totaly waste.
The actual text itself, by Johnson, is a delightful, authoritative, well researched and profoundly thought through covering of the New Testament. Hard to know where to begin with this surpreme topic. Johnson covers exegetical and historical information without letting it drown the spiritual meanings. His thinking is far-ranging, deep, multilayered, and his facitlity with writing keeps the book as alive as its topic through many areas and chapters. I highly recommend
