Theological Anthropology in Early Christianity

The author & the Book:
J. Patout Burns, is a fine patrologist, a founder and past president of the American Patristic Society, 92/93. He authored many articles and books, on the message of the Fathers of the Church, the Economy of Salvation, and the Pelagian Controversy. Theological Anthropology is the third in the: sources of Early Christian Thought, a series of English translations and studies to render the fathers understanding better.
The theme of the book is to examine the human person, presenting an overview of coherent patristic thought in Irenaeus of Lyon, Gregory of Nyssa, Pelagius, an Augustine. He offers a selected appetizer from the Holy Fathers on faith issues.
Patristic Anthropology:
In a concise review, JP Burns explains in plain English early Christian thought and its encounter with Gnostic ideas, and the ascetic movements. He shows how neoplatonism became the carrier of Alexandrine theology, and calls it Christian Platonism.
The Apostolic Fathers of the Church developed many interesting apologetic insights into the study of man, an anthropology deeply embedded in scriptures. Based on Genesis, it was developed in a continuity and contrast with Jewish thought. Other aspect which considers man as conceived within the context of early mystery religions, and Alexandrine Neo-Platonism enabled the Fathers to develop their ideas, thus helping them to present a far elaborate biblical and philosophical anthropology. They remained faithful to the revelation on man as given by the OT and Paul's Epistles. Alexandrine anthropology, has already taken far strides of a wider scope based mainly on the fundamental Pauline text (Acts 17:22-31).
St. Augustine of Hippo , theory of man, and free will debate with Pelagius, opened up the study of man towards a deeper understanding of man's relationship to God, in the Synergy of salvation. Patristic Anthropology accordingly got tightly linked to patristic soteriology, as best illustrated in Cyril of Alexandria.
Irenaeus & man's evolution:
The theological anthropology of  St. Irenaeus of Lyons (2nd century) however, is not speculative, but got some very original ideas of mans conscious development to meet gods plan for his salvation (through spiritual evolution). It actually reduces itself to a practical explanation of traditional theology, yet, the majority of third century Fathers and Christian writers follow his work Against Heresies, where he writes:
"Humanity slowly progresses, approaches perfection, and draws near to the uncreated God. The perfect is the uncreated, God. It was therefore appropriate for humanity first to be made, being made to grow, having grown to be strengthened, being stronger to multiply, having multiplied to recover from illness, having recovered to be glorified, and once glorified to see its Lord. God is the one who is going to be seen; the vision of God produces incorruptibility; incorruptibility makes a person approach God."

Excellent book!

Maybe the title isn't the most accurate, as this book is more focused on the development of the person in relation to the doctrine of grace, but as far as that topic, it does a phenomenal job. I am currently doing my post-grad in Theology, and this is one of my favorite books, as it's deep, easy-to-read, and well-represented. A must for any doctrine, grace, or theology student.

Misleading Title

Sadly this book is nothing other than an advertisement for Augustine's doctrine of the fall. It does little or nothing to address aspects of the human self such as the nature of the soul, heart, spirit, mind,and will - or the role of the body. The book also fails to address other anthropological concerns such as Christian perspectives on community, virtue or culture. Ultimately the book does not even address the issue of humanity being created in the image and likeness of God - something that should be central to "theological anthropology". St. Irenaeus and St. Gregory of Nyssa together compose only fifteen pages of the book, while the rest of the book is devoted to the debates between Augustine and Pelagius. Oddly the author tries to play Augustine as the hero over and against the "platonic" and "ascetic" traditions of the "other" Fathers of the Church, all the while ignoring that Augustine himself falls into both of these categories. The book may be of some interest to you if you are looking for some primary source reading on Augustine and Pelagius, but it certainly does not execute what the title implies.

About the Author
Leonora Tubbs Tisdale is the Clement-Muehl Professor of Homiletics at Yale Divinity School. Her research and teaching interests include: prophetic preaching, women and preaching, and congregational studies and preaching. She is the author or editor of ten books, including "Preaching as Local Theology and Folk Art, Prophetic Preaching: A Pastoral Approach, Teaching Preaching as a Christian Practice, "and three volumes of the "Abingdon Women s Preaching Annual. "She also served as one the authors of "The History of the Riverside Church in New York City, "writing the chapter on that church s rich prophetic preaching tradition. Before beginning her tenure at Yale, Professor Tisdale served on the faculties of Princeton Theological Seminary, Union Presbyterian Seminary in Virginia, and as adjunct faculty at Union Theological Seminary in New York. She has been a pastor in congregations ranging in size from 33 to several thousand. While on the pastoral staff of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, she directed a lay seminary that offered courses for over 2000 people in the greater NYC area. Professor Tisdale is a former president of the Academy of Homiletics, the professional society for North American teachers of preaching. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.). ""

Preaching as Local Theology and Folk Art

A one-of-a-kind, this book is helpful to those doing research into the values of a particular congregation's culture in order to discern how to best preach to a particular people. Tisdale helps pastors do their own ethnographic cultural analysis by looking at such intangibles as symbols and stories in order to determine what is valued and has meaning for folks and in order to determine what kind of sermon will best preach the gospel to various types of congregations. Where the book falls short is in helping pastors discern how to preach against a particular congregation's values when they are at odds with the gospel the pastor was ordained to preach, which makes this a more pastoral book, perhaps to the detriment of the prophetic calling pastors also have.

Tisdale's book is accessible and very useful for pastors.

Tisdale's book helps pastors to be better contextual preachers. She guides them in exegeting their congregations and in preaching sermons vis-a-vis that exegesis. Many of us preachers know that we are supposed to preach contextually, but we learn this lesson in seminary, where the context is very different from that of our congregations. Tisdale helps us to pay more attention to our parishioners and preach to THEM.
Her book contains an abundance of useful lists and suggestions. It is easy but enlightening reading.

Productive New Perspective

The benefit of Whedbee's book is that it offers a fresh, new perspective to the Old Testament. If you are conservative in your understanding of the Bible, you often miss some important information in your seriousness in dealing with the Scriptures. If you are more modern in your reading of the text, you might easily pass over much of the data as outdated remnants of a bygone culture. The comic reading of the Old Testament offers a correction to either extremes.
While I cannot say that I agree with all his conclusions, I have found this a valuable read as I teach the text of Genesis -- and it has opened new doors to other places in the Scriptures.

Excellent, but...

As I said on the review of the Synoptics: I enjoyed the book that, with its companion "on the synoptic gospels", form a source of "inside" information that otherwise I woudln't have access to. The book is structure according to a regular commentary with additional "notes" or "reading scenarious." Unfortunately, there are no footnotes; therefore, when they tell you abuot a particular custom of that time, there is no direct reference to a primary source. Therefore, you have to take their words for it. There is a bibliography, which can help a bit, but still you're left with no way to further a specific point.

Indespensible tool for studying the Gospel of John

Bruce Malina and Richard Rohrbaugh show that the Christian community of John's Gospel was an "anti-society", that is, a consciously alternative society consisting of exiles, rebels, or ostracized deviants. (They note parallel examples of anti-societies, such as reform-school students in Poland, members of the underworld in India, and vagabonds in Elizabethan England.) As such, it had developed its own "anti-language", that is, a resistance language used to maintain its highly sectarian religious reality. This accounts for many of the strange expressions found in the gospel. For instance, the Christians of this community referred to all outsiders as people of "this world". They believed that all members of wider society -- especially "the Jews" -- lay outside the scope of redemption and were completely beyond the pale. Like all anti-societies, they overlexicalized their language, which basically means that they used redundant euphemisms. Thus, "believing into Jesus", "abiding in him", "loving him", "keeping his word", "receiving him", "having him", and "seeing him" all meant the same thing. Likewise, "bread", "light", "door", life", "way", and "vine" were all redundant metaphors for Jesus himself. This anti-language served to maintain inner solidarity in the face of pressures (or perhaps even persecutions) from wider society. Unlike the religious language found in the Synoptic Gospels or Paul's letters, John's language would have been meaningless in the context of wider Judeo-Christian society ("this world").
Understanding this social background is crucial for interpreting the gospel as a whole and controversial passages in particular.........................

Fine Work

Dr. Malina asked me to read and review an early form of this book a few years back, of which I did not realize at the time was the first reading of this fine work. As a personal friend and past student of Dr. Malina, I can say with full sincerity that Dr. Malina's work is some of the most under-acknowledged scholarly writing of our time in this area of study. This fine volume carries on the Malina tradition of scholarly excellence in chasing down and capturing with pure mind-blowing enlightenment the multi-dimensional, historical truth behind the creation and content of John. This volume is an absolute necessity for anyone even halfway attempting to respectfully comprehend John in its rightful, historical context. This book is so wonderfully researched and executed that I can hardly recommend it enough. I urge anyone who has reached this review to order this book and all others by Dr. Malina for an extremely interesting and educational look at the world of Jesus, and furthermore, a look at how much the modern Church has distorted and twisted hardcore Biblical truth (for one of thousands of examples, check out Dr. Malina's 1995 book on Revelation and compare it to the feeble and cheap trash put out by jokesters and ill-educated fundamentalists such as Hal Lindsey). You will never look at John the same after reading this book, but I promise your life will be changed through the deep and meaningful questioning this and other Malina volumes will bring about. Do yourself and Biblical scholarship a favor and read this great book and pass the word on.

Neuger Advances Beyond Feminism

It has been about twenty years since I have journeyed into pastoral counseling approaches to the care of women. Neuger teaches me a lesson about keeping up to date in the literature. She treats the pastoral counseling of women in much broader contexts than the early feminist literature did. I felt invited to journey with her.

Helpful but incomplete

Christie Cozad Neuger has written a book that is very helpful in understanding women that come from oppressed environments. The book seems to be written as if all women are oppressed and do not have voice. I do not believe that this is so, and found the recurring opinion of how oppresed women are to be a bit tedious. It does explain some of the details of what narrative therapy is, but it is lacking in case studies to explain how to acutally apply narrative therapy. This book is very helpful in assiting one to offer care to oppressed women, but the narrative therapy portion will have to be supplemented by other readings.

Speed Learning - Fast, Fascinating History

A remarkable summary - in less than 200 pages - of more than 500 years

of religious life in America, this book was hard to put down.

The story is compelling and Koester's clean, crisp prose

propels us through the years and we see history zooming past

like scenery on a high speed chase.

Koester has a wonderful way of distilling complex themes into

reasonable summaries, leaving me intrigued, wanting to learn more

about so many of the people and topics covered.

Perhaps her greatest strength in this book, though, is her

sympathetic treatment of the various theologies at work.

Never mocking or dismissive, (yes, willing to portray the down side

as well as the positive aspect of each religious movement)

she writes candidly but respectfully, taking each movement

on its own terms, using theology not just history and sociology

to describe peoples' motivations, and letting history have its say,

leaving us draw our own conclusions.

Of special interest, each chapter ends with three short sections:

1) Suggestions for Further Reading - with a few significant works

usually calling out a particular chapter in each book

2) Web Sites - these are not hobbyist sites, but serious and

scholarly selections, usually from universities or

government archives

3) Discussion Questions - which read as much like essay questions

or homework assignments as book club discussion starters

One other detail of the book that I really enjoyed: the front

section has a 3-page time-line of significant dates and events,

but they are a mixture of political and religious significance

so that you can see the interweaving of these threads in America.

This book is a quick read and a great reference. It could be paired

with any number of books for courses on this and related topics.

For example, I'm also reading The Great Experiment: Faith and Freedom in America

which provides some pithy excerpts of primary sources on the

narrower topic of faith and freedom in America. But don't miss

Koester's "Introduction..." . It will give you an excellent summary

of a fascinating story that is still unfolding.

An Informative, Sensitive History and a Valuable Resource for Further Studies

Nancy Koester's book was an enjoyable and informative read. It is the first book that I read specifically on the history of Christianity in the U.S., and it whet my appetite for more. She not only covers the main branches and denominations of American Christianity with their key influential figures, she also explores cultural, ethnic and non-Christian religious impacts on Christianity. She helps one sense the pain and struggle of Native and African Americans as well as others, including women, to find equality within American society. One feels the religious turbulence caused by major wars along with aggressive immigration, industrialization and encroaching modernity. The clash between liberals and conservatives via issues such as the Social Gospel and Darwinian evolution are documented. Chapter 6, Responses to Modernity, was a helpful guide to my study of new 19th and early 20th century American movements such as Adventism, Christian Science and Pentecostalism. Per the author's suggestion, I purchased Paul Conkin's American Originals: Homemade Varieties of Christianity (1997) to study this area more.

After reading the book, I better appreciated the author's preface which states: "The history of Christianity in America is complex; no two historians would introduce it in quite the same way. New perspectives are always emerging." Her awareness of this complexity increases the value of this book which attempts to address it fairly. She says: "Together with specialized works, broad and synthetic studies have contributed" to the text. This included secular histories of the U.S. "as well as a few classic surveys of Christianity in America." Special mention is made of Sidney Ahlstrom's A Religious History of the American People (1972). Koester recommends that instructors combine her text with "a more specialized work on American religion, giving students both an introduction and a focus area of the instructor's or students' choice." Suggestions for further reading, useful websites, and discussion questions at the end of each chapter help make this book a very useful introductory text. I highly recommend it.

An Interesting Look at the Development of American Religion

This book did an excellent job of putting the confusing mixture of beliefs that I was presented as a child in perspective. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to either understand the roots of their own religious experience or the development of American thought.

The religious history seemed to be meticulously researched and was presented in an easy to read and interesting manner.

The questions at the end of the chapters were overkill for me as a casual reader. The book was obviously written to be used in a classroom.

The only problem that I have with this book is that I think that at times the author makes only a cursory effort to put the religious events in the overall context of what was happening in the country and the world. She did attempt to do this but it seemed forced and shallow at places.

Dr. Benjamin is a gifted researcher. The presentation is very easy to read and understand, thus giving a more realistic view of life in early Canaan. A "must read" for serious readers who want to learn Biblical history, not theological or politically spun.

Introducing Moltmann

This is a very useful introduction to Moltmann's career in theology, the questions with which he dealt, and the volumes that came from his reflection upon those questions in the light of world events. Along with the volume by Richard Bauckham (now a bit dated) of St. Andrews University, Scotland on Moltmann's theology this is an outstanding way into the mind of a beautiful Reformed thinker. The volume is written in clear, easy to read language (even though itself a translation of the German original) and strikes just the right note of historical introduction without undue adulation -- although the author was a student of Moltmann's. Highly recommended!

this book is a good place to begin

This book is one that has not always received the recognition it deserves. Maybe it would receive more notice if it was available on Kindle. It introduces the reader to a new way to view the ancient biblical world and forces the reader to consider that the way in which people have interpreted the Bible should be questioned. If you are interested in what the Bible really says, this book is a good place to begin.

History of Homosexuality in Ancient Cultures

This is a good book to read if you wish to study the history of homosexuality in the ancient East as well as the Biblical cultures. Nissinen does a pretty thorough study of homosexuality in Assyrian, Roman, Mesopotamian, and Greek cultures--as well as Israelite culture. Nissinen indicates that homosexuality was not the same in each culture. Some viewed it as a display of power and oppression and others viewed it as an expression of love and romance.
While Nissinen does a good job discussing the history I believe that his application to same sex relationships in modern times needs more work. Bridging this gap is difficult but Nissinen's theology on the homosexuality issue seems to come through in this last chapter. Since Nissinen is from Finland, his approach to the issue of homoeroticism is different than many of the authors currently researching this area.
Whether or not you agree with Nissinen's conclusions you will agree that he has done a remarkable job of presenting this history in a concise manner. I think that this book is valuable to the Biblical student who wishes to see eroticism in various cultures surrounding the Israelite and Christian communities.

Excellent engagement with ancient texts and modern issues

Martti Nissinen wrote this book with a desire to address issues of homoeroticism for the modern Lutheran Church in Finland. He uses the term "homoeroticism" advisedly, since "homosexuality" is a word only about 150 years old; one of the great strengths of his book is Nissinen's awareness of historical context and his desire to avoid anachronism.

Nissinen addresses the crisis in the Finnish Lutheran church in the Introduction, as well as issues of terminology (homoeroticism, homosexuality, and homosociability) and gender and sexual practice.

Chapters 2-6 survey homoerotic elements in texts (and sometimes images) from Mesopotamia, the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, Classical Antiquity, early rabbinic Judaism, and the New Testament. Always his concern is to foreground issues of cultural and temporal location. He shows that for the "plain reading" of such texts to take place, a lot must be known about the text's cultural context and the common usage of words. (His discussion of a word often rendered by the totally anachronistic "homosexuality" in most Greek lexica is particularly enlightening.)

The last chapter, entitled "Homoeroticism in the Biblical World and Homosexuality Today" offers a new way to try to interpret the Bible, especially when asking what relevance it has for those of us dealing with contemporary issues such as sexuality. As a faithful churchman, Nissinen does not want to "throw out the Bible," but as a modern person, he does point out that most church exegesis is deeply flawed when there is no "sufficient correlation between the topics discussed today and the ancient sources." (123)

The point: sexuality as a concept does not exist in any of the ancient literature. Moreover, the gender roles behind homoerotic behavior (and which determine how that behavior is judged in its ancient context) are vastly different than those commonly held now. When homoerotic behavior was condemned, it was because it made a "woman," that is, a passive, weak, and unmasculine being, out of a man (female homoerotic behavior does the opposite, so a woman is seen as attempting to appropriate the potency and active status of a man). Moreover, in the history of the church, "The same reasons have been used to condemn both homosexual and heterosexual contacts: sexuality has been considered an expression of lust and therefore sinful." (125) A relationship consisting of two adult, equal, committed and loving men, or two women, or even a man and a woman, was not a concept for the ancients, and therefore not something we can ask them to reflect in their literature.

A good quotation to end with: "Using individual and ambiguous biblical passages as a basis for threatening people with eternal damnation leads to a kind of scriptural positivism, which may turn out to be a matter of the cruel abuse of religious power." Amen.
