A look at the post-reformation Luther

This is the third volume of a trilogy on the Life of Martin Luther. (The other volumes are: "Martin Luther: His Road to Reformation," and "Martin Luther: Shaping and Defining the Reformation.") This volume deals with Luther's life after the glory days of the 95 Theses, Diet of Worms, and gradual acceptance and establishment of the Reformation. Luther the Doctor of Theology is beset by health problems and grows old and cantankerous, having limited patience to respond to the errors of supporters and opponents alike. Enduring great physical illness and miseries, he longs for life to end. But he continues to guide Melancthon and other reformers as they develop the foundational documents of Lutheran theology. At the end of his life, he confidently affirms the gospel he has preached.

Many histories of Luther gloss over this period in his life. It was therefore interesting to see how the aged Luther continued to face ordinary problems of politics and church governance, and also ever-emerging errors in theology among those who accepted the reformation as well as its opponents. He continued to face his "Anfectungen" (feelings of despair and condemnation) and frequently needed to cling to Christ's mercy and be reminded of the Gospel. I found this comforting, to see that even such a giant of the faith was not immune to doubt all through his life.

This volume is shorter than the preceding two, and I feel that maybe the author rushed through it a little bit, as it does not seem as in-depth as his earlier volumes. However, I am glad that he pressed forward to complete the trilogy and allow us to see this part of Luther's life. This volume also includes interesting illustrations, including a drawing of Luther a year before his death, showing his physical decline, the house where Luther died, his gravestone, a cast of his hands, and a drawing of the dead Luther's face.

An extrordinary achievement

Martin Brecht's monumental three-volume biography of Martin Luther consists of Martin Luther: His Road to Reformation 1483-1521, Martin Luther 1521-1532: Shaping and Defining the Reformation, and Martin Luther The Preservation of the Church Vol 3 1532-1546, all published in English translation from the German by Fortress Press. To date I have worked through the first two volumes and am now embarking on the third. [see update below]

These three volumes represent an extraordinary achievement. For a full appreciation, however, it is important to understand what exactly Brecht set out to do and what makes this work so valuable. His work is neither a traditional biography of Martin Luther, nor a systematic treatment of Luther's theology. What Brecht gives us here is closer to an exposition or digest of Luther's works (his books, sermons, and correspondence) set within a narrative context.

Luther produced an enormous amount of material during his lifetime, with the standard English translation of Luther's works running to 55 large volumes (Luther's Works, eds. Jaroslav Pelikan and Helmut T. Lehmann). Brecht seems to have mastered not only this material, but the writings of many of Luther's opponents and contemporaries as well. The great service he has rendered for those of us who are not Luther specialists is that we now can turn to the appropriate section of Brecht's work for summary expositions of any of Luther's works and understand them in their particular historical context. Or perhaps better yet, we can read the biography to get a sense of Luther's activity as a whole, pausing here and there to read for ourselves particular works that strike our interest. For that purpose an excellent, affordable companion to Brecht is the beautifully bound and boxed four volume set edited by Theodore Tappert called Selected Writings of Martin Luther (Fortress Press, 2007).

And what a benefit all this is to students and scholars! Imagine one is researching a particular event (for example, the Diet of Augsburg) or controversy (say, the sacramentarian controversy). Brecht will not only introduce us to those events and the major works related to them, but will bring into the discussion the more obscure sermons and letters of Luther from that period that shed important light of Luther's thinking. Consistent with his emphasis on primary sources is the fact that Brecht almost never mentions contemporary scholars in the body of his text. Endnotes cite the appropriate locations in Luther's Works (both English and German editions) along with any relevant secondary literature (the latter mostly in German).

As I mentioned, this is not a traditional biography. The best biography of Luther in my opinion remains Roland Bainton's, Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther (Hendrickson Classic Biographies). In fact, Brecht seems to assume some knowledge of the key events, personages and locations on the part of his readers. Brecht includes helpful plates and illustrations, but no maps. He is less adept than Bainton and certain other biographers at painting the texture of a scene, or depicting the dramatic ebb and flow of events, or really helping us understand the driving inspiration behind some of the secondary characters. And to be honest, some narrative or descriptive portions can be tedious - for example, the initial chapter on Luther's ancestry and childhood (1:1-21) or the details of the struggle between Luther and the Zwickau city council (2:439-446). These are areas where Brecht seems to be striving for completeness or perhaps attempting to make an original contribution by unraveling the details of a complicated situation.

The weaknesses just listed are things we can live with. Brecht has rendered us a great service with the wisdom, time and talent that he has poured into these volumes. This leads me to a final comment on the quality of the printing. These volumes are printed by Fortress Press (now Augsburg Fortress). I called the publisher in September 2009 and discovered that all three of these volumes are now available ONLY in "Print-On-Demand." The volume I saw printed this way was very difficult to read, but with some effort I was able to track down copies from earlier, regular printings. Let's hope that the publisher will go back to a regular printing. "Print-On-Demand" is not the way such an extraordinary achievement should be treated - by a Lutheran press no less!

UPDATE: I have now completed the third volume and, as I expected, there are no changes necessary to my review above. Note that each volume has its own index, while volume three contains a additional, more comprehensive subject index covering the entire set. Finally, I assume that the "Print-On-Demand" problem noted above can be avoided entirely now with the appearance of the Kindle Edition.

Well Done Conclusion to this Series on Luther

As Brecht so correctly titles this final volume of three on the life of Luther, this was the theme of his final sixteen years: the preservation of the church.

He was obsessed with the proclamation of the pure gospel. His final years were devoted to this cause, and Brecht preserves this history in his continued easy to read style, but very scholarly and historically accurate.

While all around him toil and turmoil reigned against this pure gospel and its valued proclamation, the Reformer remainded steadfast in spite of failing health. His disputes with those who wanted to reform too much as well as political problems and disputes even within those of the Lutheran persuasion all troubled him. At times his patience wore thin, and there were signs of anger and rudeness exhibited. But, my God, what this man endured and his steadfastness to the Gospel and God's means of salvation are phenomenal and to be followed. We certainly want to not follow with his sometimes harshness, but when it erupts, seek our dear Christ's forgiveness.

As much historical biography of Luther is of his early period, this treatment of his latter is valuable and a reliable one.

Good introduction

The book approaches the Text from a narrative point of view, and focuses mostly on how the plot is developped. He divided the chapters according to the major characters of the Gospels: Jesus, the Authorities and the Disciples. I found it easy to read and right to the point. I consider it to be a good way to start to deepen the understanding of the gospel. I would read this one BEFORE reading any commentary.

Conflict in Mark

Conflict in Mark is a great book for literary criticism for the Gospel of Mark. Kingsbury does a great job of describing the interaction of Jesus, disciples and the religious authorities with each other and what they communicate to the reader. Unfortunately with such a short book, Kingsbury leaves the reader wanting to know more. There is little or no explanation of minor characters, including the crowd, in their role in the Gospel of Mark. At times, Kingsbury can be a bit repetitive because he is dealing with the three characters repeatedly in each of the three chapters. Overall, it is a good book to begin studying the Gospel of Mark.

Thorough commentary of Markan Gospel

This is a good and thorough commentary of the Gospel of Mark. The text does a fine job of mapping out the unique perspective of Mark, the characters within it and how conflict between characters gives rise to the intensity of the Markan Gospel. I liked the format of the book, which examined each critical character (Jesus, the authorities and the disciples)and their role at each phase of the Gospel text. As Kingsbury works through the Markan text, you can see the pattern of conflict between the "things of God" and the "things of humans".
Overall, the book was an interesting read that I'm glad I have in my library.

Great book for those with no Islamic background.

I took Professor Kaltner's Intro. to Islam class at Rhodes College. We used this text as brief overview of the Islamic faith and practices. This book would be very enlightening for those who have little or no knowledge of Islam and the Islamic way of life.

Interesting read

I read this for my Bible study group's summer discussion. The author lives here and came to our meeting to answer any questions. It was a very informative event.

The book gives a lot of basic information about the origin and practices of Islam and how many of its teachings have been distorted by radical fundamentalists. It also goes into some of the differences among the various sects, particularly Sunnis and Shiites. It is very short and easy to understand. I recommend it.

Western Misconceptions About Islam Swept Away

The sub-title of this book, "What Non-Muslims Should Know" is what captured my attention. In the post-9/11 world where tolerance is threatened and there seems to be pervasive hatred simmering for what we don't understand, author Kaltner supplies what he promises. He provides a perspective that dwells on what Islam means, and has meant, historically to its followers and its place politically to the present. "Questions for Discussion" are included after each of the six chapters, making it useful as a textbook as well as a way to dwell on the material. I found "Islam" enlightening and would recommend it highly.

At Last! A Truly Integrated Text on Pastoral Care

"Going into ministry without understanding how people work and how they relate to each other is like going into the dense forest with a blindfold on: you're bound to get hurt." (From the conclusion of "Caring for God's People").
In writing "Caring for God's People" Philip Culbertson has produced a pastoral text that practices what many others have preached but not undertaken - to offer an integrated approach in pastoral caregiving that involves strong theoretical backing, practical information, and serious consideration of contextual issues within any pastoral relationship.
Culbertson divides this text into three sections. The first offers detailled overviews of three psychologicalc theories he identifies as offering deep insight into the task of pastoral caring. The three approaches identified within this section are: Family Systems Theory, Narrative Counselling theory, and Object Relations Theory.
Giving a full chapter to each of these approaches, Culbertson provides a detailled but accessible overview, offering specifc strengths of each for use in pastoral praxis. He takes care to point to links the approaches have with one another and wider theoretical understandings, thus encouraging the reader to critically assess how they overlap and compliment one another.
Culbertson takes care to identify his own biases and cultural context (as an American working within a South Pacific Setting) and at various points explores cultural considerations that should be taken into account before any of these approaches are simply "applied" to any given context. This is a useful reminder for those of us in pastoral ministry to always be aware of how the models and approaches we take for granted in our own context may (or may not) apply in other contexts.
The second section of the book is entitled "The Application" and its five chapters focus on various applications of the theoretical approaches discussed in common pastoral situations - pre-mariage, marriage, and divorce counselling, counselling with gay and lesbian persons, and working with "those who mourn".
It is this second section that distinguishes "Caring for God's People" from that vast majority of other pastoral texts. For Culbertson demonstrates the application of the theoretical material in very concrete and specific ways. This application is made more accessible through the inclusion of material in each chapter that relates to issues and understandings of each pastoral context. In the chapter dealing with premarital counselling for example Culbertson outlines a framework for premarital counselling including a time-frame, likely issues to arise, and details relating to the service and liturgy itself that the minister may consider. It is this level of intergration of the practical and theoretical (and the integration of more than one theoretical model) that sets this text apart for others offering a purely theoretical or purely practical focus.
This degree of integration is evidenced throughout section two of the book, and culminates in section three which is entitled "Staying Safe in Ministry". Here Culbertson focuses on issues relating to the personal and practicing safety of clergy and pastoral caregivers, examining topics such as referral and understanding the nature of different forms of couselling, the role and nature of supervision, and (in what I consider to be the best chapter of the book) the central importance of pastoral congruence and self-awareness in ministry practice.
The particular strength of this text lies in Culbertson's ability to offer an overview to theoretical appraches and specific areas of pastoral activity that are not only readily accessible to those new to the topics, but also provide enought depth to offer challenges and new awareness for those already familiar with aspects of the material presented. In particular, the careful layering and integration of material offers many points of contact for the reader, in a tangible way, to understand the premise of Culbertson's main argument: that things happen best when carefully and appropriately integrated -be that the aproach taken to a particular issue, or the very being of the pastoral caregiver him or herself.
In a text such as this it is impossible to include everything. I would have like to see a chapter in section two relating to pastoral care with those living with mental illness within the community - in my own practice I have found this to be one of the key pastoral issues I find within the community I am stationed. I would also have found helpful some coverage of criticizms of the theoretical approaches discussed.
I am impressed with this book which I see as an invaluable contribution to texts for those exploring or teaching in the field of pastoral theology. Culbertson is to be congratulated on this work which seems likely to become a key text in the field.
We have long been overdue for a text that takes the integraton of theory, practice, and practitioner seriously. Culbertson has provided a text that does that clearly and well.

Extremely Informative, A Little Judgmental

It is difficult to imagine a critical, scholastic, introductory textbook to the entire Hebrew Bible (and deuterocanonical texts) that could do a better job than this. The book tops out at just over 600 pages, which is somewhat daunting, but well-worth a studious read. There is only so much that can be done in an introductory textbook without becoming overwhelming. I believe the book found it's way to that boundary between too much and not enough. Inevitably, with a book of this quality, criticisms might tend to become nit-picky. The "illustrations" gathered together in the center of the textbook are lackluster, few in number, and rather common. Anyone with a real interest in the Hebrew Bible or the ancient Near East will be familiar with most of the objects and places pictured. They could at least have presented color photographs. Even better, they could have included a CD with a large archive of photographs to flip through as you read--which brings us to the included CD. I've always felt that including the textbook on an accompanying CD was rather pointless. It's probably done to claim an added value for the product and substantiate an increase in price. Fortunately, you can find the book steeply discounted on places like Amazon.com and then toss the CD without regret (except, perhaps, for the increase in environmental waste). But even if having the book on CD was a welcome option, the publisher chose to discriminate against a large number of its customers by making the work accessible only through a Windows-based operating system. The CD will not load, install, or run on Linux or (I assume) Mac. Being a Linux user, therefore, I found the CD doubly worthless. As a lover of the Tetrateuch, I was thrilled at how much space and time was committed to Genesis and the first half of Exodus. Unfortunately, the rest of the Tetrateuch suffered. The last half of Exodus as well as Numbers receive, perhaps, the poorest treatment in the entire textbook. Leviticus, thankfully, was not treated so unjustly, but it's treatment still suffered. My biggest complaint is the biased judgment calls that Collins weaves subtly or not-so-subtly through the entire work. He repeatedly inserts factual judgments on ideas or arguments which he either has not presented evidence for or had previously discussed only as a possible way of viewing things. I found myself repeatedly writing the word "why?" in the margin or making some sort of note where Collins proceeded upon an assumption or argument that I found rather thin or unconvincing. It is clear that Collins attempts to bypass his own biases by giving time and attention to various arguments and evidences, but he is not consistent. Perhaps Collins felt the need when dealing with sacred literature to guard against the abuses of Fundamentalism. But since when was he the guardian of the text? Overall, the book comes highly recommended. One cannot fail to receive a great deal of critical, theological, and historical insight, while building a solid foundation in their study of the Hebrew Bible.

In my six years of study as a post-graduate Theology student,I have read many books introducing me to Hebrew Scripture. Many were excellent and scholarly yet none possessed the "flow and enticement" of Collins' research and presentation. I looked forward each night to resuming my study. Collins managed to tie all the information together, fill in all the gaps, present many perspectives and offer the latest assessment of the evidence thus far. I teach an Adult Bible Study - and ALWAYS have this book at my side. It's as pleasurable a read as it is informative!

An Excellent Book - Highly Recommended

This is an excellent book, which is exactly what it claims to be an "Introduction to the Hebrew Bible". It will be welcomed by all who want a scholarly, balanced and clear introduction to the difficult topic of the Hebrew Bible. In over 600 pages the Hebrew Bible is discussed, based on solid research. However Professor Collins does not get bogged down excessively with erudite "on the other hands", which might confuse excessively.

Professor Collins skill as a teacher in Yale comes through clearly, as he covers such an amount of material with expertise and knowledge.

This book fulfills a real need for educated, interested readers who wish to gain an insight into the Hebrew Bible, which underlies our civilization.

Theologian of Freedom

This volume on the works of Karl Barth is part of a series by Fortress Press entitled 'the Making of Modern Theology: Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Texts'. Each of the volumes in the series focuses upon one particular theologian of note. These volumes are of use to students, seminarians, ministers and other readers interested in the development of theological ideas in the modern and postmodern world. Each volume is a reader of key texts from the theologian highlighted - the text entries are annotated a bit by the editors, and the editor of each volume provides an introduction setting the general stage for context and understanding.
Editor Clifford Green describes Barth as a theologian of freedom. Freedom is not here characterised in the Western political sense, but rather in a theological sense -- God frees us from sin and death and frees us for new life. Barth, born near the end of the nineteenth century, had a strong reaction to biblical and theological scholarship during that time, which was increasingly becoming an amalgamation of history, philosophy, culture and linguistic studies, but very little substantive work was done (or even felt necessary for) faith and belief.
Educated in the liberal theological tradition of Germany, then the dominant voice in Christian theological enterprise, he studied with leading scholars such as Schleiermacher and van Harnack. At first intending to have an academic career, he left this for a time to take a pastorate in Geneva. His liberalism took hold in the form of socialist activity - he helped to organise trades unions, and began preaching and lecturing on social gospel and social justice issues. Barth was disillusioned by the theological establishment's support of Germany in the first world war (and its support of war in general), and turned his back on this establishment in many ways, not the least of which was intellectually. He began work on his life's magnum opus, the multi-volume Church Dogmatics, as well as other works that would be pivotal in theological development. One such text was his commentary on the book of Romans.
In this commentary, Barth broke with the prevailing theological notions of analysing the text for understanding of various aspects -- historical, linguistic, etc. -- and instead used these various methods of interpretation to look at the book of Romans as the Word of God. It also argued a renewed sense of God that is beyond human notions of religiosity -- a recurrent theme in the liberal theological development. This God, however, would become for Barth 'wholly other', a God in no way dependent upon humanity or humankind's actions. However, this would eventually become too great a chasm for Barth; that God is wholly other remains a constant, but God becomes through Barth's development of Christology and incarnation a God who is wholly other with us.
Green's selection of texts comes in five sections. The first gives a few pieces by way of introduction, including excerpts from a later Barth piece, 'The Humanity of God', a text often used in introductory theology classes. The second section looks at key texts prior to the full development of the church dogmatics, including excerpts from the commentary on Romans mentioned above, as well as pieces on social justice and his work on Anselm.
The third section begins with Barth's famous 'Nein!' response to Emil Brunner, as an argument against natural theology, and Barth's draft of the Barmen Declaration, a document outlining concerns of German clergy against the newly ensconced Nazi regime in Germany. The rest of this section looks at pieces from the Church Dogmatics that have to do with theology for the Christian community. The fourth section goes beyond, highlighting Barth's works on responsibility to the world. The fifth and final section has a few pieces of Barth's work in relation to Mozart, his favourite of composers -- Barth once said that when angels sing in praise of God, they may play only Bach, but when angels are 'off-duty, they most likely play Mozart.
Each volume in this series also has a selected bibliography section -- this one for Barth is divided into works by Barth (primary sources), works about Barth (secondary sources), and larger bibliographic references. The book also has several indexes -- an index of biblical passages, a subject index, and a names index. This is a very good book for scholarship. The translations of the works from the original German is new, preserving some of the language uses (masculine pronouns for God) while modifying others (gender neutral translations for terms such as Mensch, Menschen).

An accessible Barth

Clifford Greeen's introductory essay and comments on the selected texts set Barth in his historical context, chart the development of his thought, and indicate the significance of his theology in the development of Christian theology as a whole. Extensive coverage is also given to Barth's public theology, including such topics as civil community, communism, and nuclear war. It is an excellent introduction to a theologian whose vision is arguably broader than anyone since Aquinas.

Good introduction to a great theologian

This is a review of the Kindle edition.

This is a fantastic collection. I have been interested in Barth for about the past three years, and in that time I have never found a selection of texts that is as useful as this one. Barth is a difficult theologian to grasp, especially because of the differing stages in his theological development, but this volume bridges those gaps as well as highlights the wide range of subjects on which Barth wrote. Pieces on East-West tension, nuclear war, Mozart, and the Barmen Declaration are included in this volume side by side with ample selections from the Dogmatics, which are the fullest expression of Barth's mature thought. Clifford Green's general introduction (which is scholarly, but still down-to-earth) and his contextualizing each selection makes tracking Barth's growth as a theologian doable, which is an admirable feat to accomplish in such a small space. It also brings together in one place a variety texts that would be nearly impossible to gather on your own outside of an academic institution. The selections from the Dogmatics are generous and (to me) well selected, comprising about a hundred pages drawn from the whole of the massive work. If you are looking for a starting point with Barth's theology, this is a respectable door into the complex, vibrant world of Karl Barth - who is (in my mind) the true 20th century heir of the Reformed tradition.

As far as reviewing the theology itself, I cannot hope to offer criticism - Barth blows me away every time I read him, putting into words that of which I have only ever had dim notions. He is the one theologian to which I continually return at different stages in my life, and I always find new insights, deeper levels of meaning, and more personal resonance. Contemporary writer Marilynne Robinson observed that "great theology is always a kind of giant and intricate poetry, like epic or saga." Though she was referring to the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, I think she would extend the same compliment to Barth, and I can think of no better summary of his work.

Rating for this edition of Barth: four stars. All in all, it is a reasonable price for Kindle, and the formatting is not too obnoxious, but better linking to the endnotes would have been nice, as well as better font formatting. I also really would have liked to see the essay "The Strange New World of the Bible" included in this collection - it is a personal favorite. The print edition would receive five stars from me.
